Obama: Just Lying to Your Children

Gary Bauer discusses some of the problems with Obama's indoctrination speech to schoolchildren.

The President Speaks to Students

The controversy surrounding Barack Obama’s speech to students today continued to intensify over the weekend. Big Media repeatedly reported that conservatives were “overreacting” and “attacking the President’s speech unfairly.” What the media failed to report was that conservatives were upset not about the content of Obama’s speech, but about the study guide on which the White House worked hand-in-hand with the Department of Education. (This may well be a violation of federal law.) Having students write letters themselves asking how they can help the president has no place in our nation’s classrooms, regardless of whether the president is a Democrat or Republican.

The media also routinely said that George H.W. Bush made a similar speech in 1991 without controversy. That could not be farther from the truth. I encourage you to read Byron York’s article in today’s Washington Examiner describing what really happened in Washington at the time of Bush’s planned speech. York writes that Democrats in Congress ordered a government investigation and summoned then-Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander and other administration officials to testify at a hearing regarding the speech. You won’t hear Big Media mention that story, though.

Well, the president spoke just hours ago, a few miles from our office. We watched his motorcade drive by. Obama’s speech was laced with contradictions of his past statements and policies. In the speech he tells students to be responsible. I agree with him, but he’s “bailed out” irresponsible adults who have borrowed too much.

He said that students will need to be “creative to build new companies that will create jobs and boost our economy.” That will be difficult to do because of his tax policies that discourage new companies and hurt small businesses. He continued, saying that here in America “you write your own destiny, you make your own future.” But Obama has suggested numerous times that he believes capitalism is unfair and believes in redistributing the wealth because the wealthy are “lucky.”

Perhaps Obama contradicted himself the most when he said, “The story of America isn’t about people who quit when things got tough. It’s about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best.” I agree with this statement 100 percent. America is a great country, filled with great people. But sadly, Obama refused to acknowledge that while he was on his Worldwide Apology Tour, during which he constantly emphasized our alleged failures.
