Quotes of the Day

"This Memorial Day, please thank a veteran. If you know a member of the Greatest Generation who could use a visit, or maybe some help, please reach out to them. If you know a local family missing a loved one who is currently stationed overseas, please stop by to see how they are doing. This is the greatest nation the world has ever known. And that is true because for over 200 years patriots have answered their nation’s call and given their all in defense of liberty, freedom and the United States of America."

Bob McDonnell
Governor of Virginia

"On this Memorial Day, we must reflect on all those American soldiers and sailors, Marines, Airmen and others who stood up for our country, and gave their lives. Without a doubt they sacrificed for their families and for the future they hoped their children would have. They gave up everything for that hope, and to be sure that no foreign power would take away our liberty and well-being. Now it is our duty, as Americans, to maintain that liberty. This means that we have to be constantly and vigilantly involved in defining and understanding what American freedom really is. Ideas matter and this is our duty to live up to those who gave up everything for us and for our country."

James S. Gilmore

"Who better than the families of fallen soldiers can know the sadness and heartache caused by the wartime deaths of the many servicemen and servicewomen who, indeed, gave their lives for America (and Iraq and Afghanistan, etc.) ? And yet there is an abiding pride that flows from the nobility of serving the cause of freedom led by the most blessed (as in God-blessed) nation on earth. Today we ask you to reflect in gratitude on the price of liberty that we — and millions upon millions of citizens of foreign, allied nations — enjoy, thanks to our brave military men and women."

Peter LaBarbera

"Today, on this Memorial Day, let us remember that America's freedom is secured by Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Guardsmen and Marines who risk their lives in the service of our country.

Throughout our history, many of these heroes have made the ultimate sacrifice. This is a time to honor their memory."

LtCol Oliver L. North, USMC (Ret.)

"...on this Memorial Day, let us honor those no longer with us. But let's also take a moment and thank those who do return, and offer them our gratitude and the opportunity to have full and productive lives.

"If we really care about peace, we must, through our strength, demonstrate our unwillingness to accept an ending of the peace. We must be strong enough to create peace where it does not exist and strong enough to protect it where it does. That's the lesson of this century and, I think, of this day. "

Dear Fellow Virginians,

Today, as we remember those who have fallen while serving our great nation, I wanted to drop you a quick note of commemoration. In Richmond last Thursday, I had the honor of hosting Virginia's 2010 Wall of Honor Ceremony where we formally recognized the 206 Virginians who have died in the Global War on Terrorism. Tragically 24 Virginians have fallen in the past year.

Virginia's heroes have served our nation with dignity and honor in every war since our founding. These guardians of freedom deserve our highest level of gratitude and respect.

Quote of the Day

"There's a really interesting new poll out today - from CNN no less - which shows OVERWHELMING opposition by the American people to any attempted boycotts against Arizona as a result of its new immigration enforcement law. Further, it shows the country moving away from Obama and the Democrats on this issue at a pretty rapid clip."

From the poll:

A full 82% of Americans are opposed to boycotts against Arizona -
57% saying that they support the law.

60% of the public favor immigration reform that focuses on enforcing the law and the border, (instead of the "comprehensive, let's find a way to let them stay and be legal" reform).
54% say that they support building the border fence.
Support for more fines on businesses that hire illegals has risen to
71% (from 58% four years ago)...

Quote of the Day

"I became a Republican because I saw first-hand that the big government policies I had believed in as a student simply did not work. I saw that in many cases, they made the lives of the poor worse. And I also saw that poor communities began to thrive when people were given freedom, security, and opportunity. Coupled with the far-left’s hostility to America and Israel after 9/11, those experiences changed my views."

Obama's Waterloo: Does the Trail Lead to the Oval Office?

Grounds for impeachment: What did Obama know and when did he know it?

Sestak’s Scandal

While Rep. Joe Sestak has been basking in the glow of his upset primary victory over Senator Arlen Specter, the stench of scandal is starting to surround his candidacy.

During the race, Sestak, a former vice admiral, repeatedly stated that he had been offered a top job in the administration, perhaps Secretary of the Navy, if he would get out of the race and clear the field for Specter. The insinuation was that the Specter campaign was colluding with the Obama White House. It was politics at its worst, but Sestak was above it all. Even if Obama had been corrupted, Joe Sestak was running to change Washington. It worked. Joe Sestak, the honest admiral, prevailed over the entrenched incumbent politician.

Unfortunately for Sestak, the story isn’t going away. The fact is, Pennsylvania’s Democrat Senate nominee has accused the Obama White House of committing a felony – of attempting to bribe someone for the purpose of influencing a federal election. But Sestak has so far refused to identify which White House official approached him with the bribe. Speculation reasonably focuses on White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, a veteran operative of the Chicago/Clinton political machines.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs won’t answer questions about Sestak’s allegations, and the media are getting suspicious. If the answer were simple, Sestak and Gibbs would have put the issue to rest by now. The fact that it lingers suggests there’s more to it and that it could well be far more complicated.

Sestak has some explaining to do, and so does Obama. Both of them need to come forward with the whole truth. If Sestak refuses to disclose who in the Obama White House offered him a bribe, then he is complicit in concealing a crime and in the obstruction of justice. Stay tuned.

Regarding Virginia's lawsuit to overturn the individual mandate contained in the recent healthcare bill:

"On May 24 the Federal government responded in the U.S. District Court with a motion to dismiss the suit.

This is routine and we expected this to be their response.

My team and I will respond to this motion to dismiss by June 7. The Federal government then has until June 22 to reply to Virginia's response."

Battle of Jack's Shop -- Civil War Tour

Jack's Shop Talk and Tour
Wednesday, July 14th
9:30 a.m.
Bethel Methodist Church pavilion
Rochelle, (Madison County) Virginia

Harold Woodward, Jr., our own Madison County author and Civil War Historian, is presenting a talk and tour of the Civil War Battle named, Jack's Shop. Very little has been written about this momentous event that occurred here, within beautiful Madison County. Mr. Woodward has conducted his own personal research regarding this battle and will share this information on that day.

On Sept. 22, 1863 at Jack's Shop (today known as Rochelle), the Confederate Army (Horse Artillery & Calvary) under the command of J.E.B. Stuart was attacked on three fronts. A gallant but bloody battle followed--as a matter of fact, it was the largest Horse Artillery & Calvary engagement of the Civil Warafter Gettysburg! And it occurred here, in Madison County.

STOP H.R. 5175

Tony Perkins, Family Research Council, shines the light on anti-First Amendment moves by devious Democrats.

Campaign Finance Bill Doesn't 'Ad' Up

Although it's taking a back seat to the firestorm of DADT, Democrats are moving quickly behind the scenes to pass a devastating campaign finance bill called the DISCLOSE (Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections) Act, or H.R. 5175. The legislation would handcuff groups like FRC Action in any political advertising. For one thing, it would force organizations to list their five largest donors on commercial screens, even if they didn't fund that particular ad! The bill is specifically designed to overturn the Supreme Court's decision inCitizens United v. FEC, which protected the free speech of organizations in election season.

Obviously, this is a continuation of the Left's intimidation campaign, where liberals try to silence conservatives from speaking out on important issues. We've witnessed similar tactics in the marriage debates of California and Washington State. And what a coincidence--these reporting requirements would take effect just in time to protect vulnerable Democratic incumbents from conservative ad blitzes! Contact your representative today and ask him/her to respect the free speech rights of every American by voting against H.R. 5175.

Quote of the Day

"Arizona has not adopted a new immigration law. All it has done is to enforce existing law that President Obama refuses to enforce. It is hardly a radical policy to suggest that if an officer on a routine traffic stop encounters a driver with no driver’s license, no passport, and who doesn’t speak English, that maybe that individual might be here illegally.

And to those who say we must reform our immigration laws – I reply that we don’t need to reform them – we need to enforce them. Just as every other government does. Just as Mexico does.

Above all, this is a debate of, by and for the American people. If President Calderon wishes to participate in that debate, I invite him to obey our immigration laws, apply for citizenship, do what 600,000 LEGAL immigrants to our nation are doing right now, learn our history and our customs, and become an American. And then he will have every right to participate in that debate.

Until then, I would politely invite him to have the courtesy while a guest of this Congress to abide by the fundamental rules of diplomacy between civilized nations not to meddle in each other’s domestic debates."

Quote of the Day

"John Morton, the Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, should be cleaning out his desk today and joining the ranks of the unemployed. Last week, in a meeting with the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune,Secretary Morton said that if his agency receives referrals of illegal immigrants from Arizona, his office would not necessarily “process” them.

Mr. Morton joins a long list of Obama officials who don’t like the Arizona law but haven’t read the law. He takes it a step further. If Secretary Morton doesn’t like a law, he apparently believes he can ignore it.

America is built on the rule of law. We have entered dangerous waters when an appointee of the Executive branch of government suggests his branch of government may ignore a duly passed law. When a government official embraces lawlessness, he is a threat to the Republic. Fire him now, Mr. President"

May 25th: Culpeper, VA Rally to Support the Murkowski Resolution

May 25th
10:00 AM- 12:00 PM
Culpeper, VA

Senator Mark Warner will have a staff member in Culpeper, VA on May 25
at the County Library from 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM.

This is a great opportunity to say Hi and
urge Warner to support the Murkowski Resolution.

Tell Your Senators to Vote "Yes" on Murkowski Resolution

Support the Murkowski Resolution of Disapproval - a resolution that would stop the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from pursuing its backdoor cap and trade schemes. Your help - sending emails, making phone calls - on behalf of the resolution has brought the roster of bipartisan cosponsoring Senators up to 41. Take action again to push the Murkowski Resolution across the finish line.

Tuesday, May 25th: A Day of Action to Stop the EPA.

A vote on the Senate floor could come very soon and it is important that our efforts these past months not be in vain. On Tuesday, please plan to set aside a little time to help protect our economy from the damaging regulations of the EPA.

Late last year, the EPA issued an "endangerment finding" that allowes the agency to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act, which was designed to regulate specific pollutants, rather than something as common as carbon dioxide. Sen. Murkowski (R-AK) has introduced a resolution of disapproval to keep the EPA from leapfrogging Congress with it's own regulations that would be administered by a vast, unelected bureacracy. The economic effects of new EPA regulations could be devastating, slowing the economy and sending more jobs overseas to escape the high costs.

With our economy in a slump and continuing high unemployment, we can't afford the added costs of more regulations and new energy taxes. High energy costs affect everything from heating our homes, the daily commute, the cost of food and shipping. Unfortunately, is the poor who can't absorb these higher costs the hardest and it's the energy producing and agriculture states that could suffer the most. Senator Murkowski's resolution needs our support to keep these sweeping powers out of the EPA's control.

Please join us on Tuesday, May 25 for our Day of Action to Stop the EPA. On Tuesday, we need to send a loud, clear message all at once to our Senators to support the Murkowski Resolution.

A Prayer to Make God our Foundation

"God bless us one and all ... Especially those who denounce Him, God bless America and Canada, despite all our faults. We are still the greatest nations of all. God bless our service men and women who are fighting to protect our right to pray and worship God.

Let's make 2010 the year the silent majority is heard and we put God back as the foundation of our families and institutions. And our military forces come home from all the wars."

We pray in the name of Christ.

Quote of the Day

"... I watched the disgusting spectacle of Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon condemning Arizona for its new anti-illegal immigration law from the White House Rose Garden. Worse yet, I watched as our own president not only didn’t defend his country – he joined Calderon in kicking Americans fed-up with illegal immigration and open borders. Did Obama forget for a second that he was President of the United States of America? Did Obama forget that it is his job to defend this country?

After his outrageous bows to the Saudi king and the Japanese emperor, and his repeated apologies for America to various audiences around the world, I would have thought that someone at the White House with some public relations sense would have spoken up and suggested that perhaps the immigration issue and Arizona’s popular new law ought to be avoided in public. Instead, the president continued the pattern of denigrating his own country in front of foreign leaders.

Unfortunately, Calderon wasn’t satisfied with bashing Arizona from the White House lawn. He did it again before a joint session of Congress today, at which point Vice President Biden, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democrat members of Congress all jumped up and offered a standing ovation! (The hypocrisy is unbelievable. Click here to learn how Mexico deals with illegal immigration.)

How out-of-touch can the political elites be? The overwhelming majority of the American people support Arizona’s law. It’s not about racism, but the rule of law andhomeland security in a post-9/11 world.

By the way, the president repeated his solution to the problem of illegal immigration – he’s going to crack down on businesses who hire illegal aliens. So if you’re an employer and you know the brute force of Big Government is going to come down hard on you, what are you supposed to do? How are you supposed to tell whether a prospective employee is a legal citizen? That’s right – you will ASK FOR PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP – the very thing that has led Obama and so many liberal politicians to condemn the Arizona law!"

Fighting the Tightening Grip of the Federal Government

Cuccinelli Thrills Pro-Family NOVA Crowd

Nearly 100 grassroots activists, elected officials and candidates for office attended the Prince William and Manassas Family Alliance Gala dinner Monday evening where they were addressed by Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

Cuccinelli gave an update on the lawsuit filed on behalf of the Commonwealth by his office concerning the recently passed federal health care legislation. Cuccinelli argues that the provision in the health care act that requires Americans to purchase health care insurance is a violation of the U.S. Constitution.

Interestingly, Cuccinelli referenced George Washington University Law School professor and oft quoted “legal expert” Jonathan Turley in his defense, saying that Turley has argued that the federal health care act could indeed be the final blow to the Founder’s vision of “federalism.” Should Cuccinelli’s suit, or the other suits being brought by other states, fail, Turley insinuates that there would then be very little left outside the control or influence of the federal government.

Cuccinelli added, if the government can compel its citizens to purchase one product (health insurance) there is nothing to stop it from purchasing another product (say, a car made by GM).

Essentially, Cuccinelli is arguing that individual citizens who do not have health insurance, and thus are not participating in the “interstate commerce” of health care insurance, cannot be compelled to purchase health insurance by the federal government under the interstate commerce clause of the federal constitution. Case law surrounding the interstate commerce clause is lengthy and confusing to say the least. However, there appears to be no other example where the courts have ruled economic inactivity to be interstate commerce (one exception being from 1792 when Congress compelled people to buy guns – really).

Ultimately, this case is likely to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. Cuccinelli estimates that won’t take place until at least mid-2012. The individual mandate in the health care bill doesn’t take effect until 2014.

Currently, 21 states, including Virginia, are involved with some type of lawsuit against the federal government concerning the health care bill. The two primary suits are in Virginia and Florida. The Virginia General Assembly also passed the Health Care Freedom Act during this year’s session, legislation that protects Virginians from being forced to buy health insurance.

Cuccinelli urged the crowd Monday to take advantage of the times to educate and inform their friends and family, particularly their children, on the first principles of our nation’s founding documents, such as the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Many people today do not know enough about our Founding or what those documents say to understand the implications of the federal government’s take over of what has always been a private enterprise.

Few disagree that there is need for some type of health reform in our nation. At The Family Foundation we struggle each year to pay the ever-increasing cost of health care for our staff. But few outside the beltway or among the academic left believe that the federal government is capable of managing our nation’s health care system wisely.
