Aug. 6th Re-enactment: Stonewall Jackson's March

Here's a very special event!... please mark your calendars. It should be a great time....Bring your family, neighbors, and all your friends.....

The special event is a tribute to the courageous march by General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson and his 25,000 thousand strong "foot cavalry" in late November of 1862. He and his foot troops, marched from Marksville/Stanley, Virginia (Page County)--located within the beautiful Shenandoah Valley--and traveled east over the Blue Ridge Mountains by way of the Blue Ridge Turnpike (Gordonsville-New Market Turnpike).

They crossed present day Skyline Drive at Fishers Gap, between Skyland Resort and Big Meadows. They then traveled down the mountain, on the east side, again on the Turnpike through present day Syria, Virginia (Madison County) where they camped for the evening. This would be the last time the gallant leader, Stonewall Jackson, would ever see his beloved Shenandoah Valley for he was mortally wounded in May of 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia.

In recognition of their march which brought them very close to DuCard Vineyard, our good friend and owner of DuCard Vineyards (Scott Elliff), is commemorating this special event by offering the below special events at his vineyard. The event is free, and is very family friendly.

The vineyard is located at 40 Gibson Hollow Lane Etlan (Madison County), VA. Gibson Hollow Lane is just off Etlan Road (Rt. 643) which runs between Etlan and Syria, Va.

Come to the mountains. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and learn a portion of the rich history which can be found within Madison County. Hope to see you there----

Stonewall Jackson “March on DuCard Vineyards”

August 6, 2011

1-6 PM

Join us for a great Civil War 150th anniversary commemorative event. Stonewall Jackson and his troops will be visiting the tasting room and we'll be releasing our new 2nd Corps wine for his, and your, enjoyment. This limited edition wine commemorates his march over the mountains down the road from DuCard, with 25,000 troops on the way to the battle of Fredericksburg.

The re-enactors will also make camp that night at the winery and will be available to demonstrate life of soldiers on the move, including demonstrations of cooking, weaponry, fife and drum music and more. It all should be quite a spectacle !

Event is free. Family and dog friendly. (Actual march time scheduled for 2 PM)

Quote of the Day

"I can assure you that Anders Breivik was not a follower of Jesus Christ. I can say that with confidence because neither he nor anyone else can cite one word from the teachings of Christ that would justify his evil actions. His murderous rampage is a repudiation of the whole body of Christ's teachings. The same cannot be said about the teachings of Muhammad, which contain many statements that can be used to justify murder.

No one can find one Christian theologian, reputable pastor, denominational leader, Christian author or philosopher who will attempt to defend Breivik's actions. Unfortunately, many imams, Muslim leaders and mosques will defend Islamists who intentionally kill civilians, including children."

Quote of the Day

"While no plan may be perfect, the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act protects our seniors and veterans, ensures the debt limit is not raised without a credible plan for addressing our debt problem, and preserves our ability to protect and defend our nation. It is the plan that has been put forward for a vote. It is a plan that follows the basic economic principle that says we cannot spend more than we have.

And most of all, the Cut, Cap and Balance Act is a much-needed plan that will return the United States to the path of economic prosperity and freedom for which our Founding Fathers knew we were destined."

Quote of the Day

"When you stray from the God-given confines of marriage, where do you draw the line? How is it fair to term one meandering relationship “recognized” without validating the other variations? Where does it end?

Same-sex advocates have no intention of declaring victory in New York and calling it quits. The goal is not to advance “equality,” the goal is to redefine marriage until existing sexual norms are no longer in existence. Counterfeit forms of marriage cheapen and undermine real marriage. The union of a man and a woman in a committed marriage is the foundation of a stable society. Traditional marriage and family are too important for society to experiment with to advance a political agenda.

Social science and history concur: men, women, and children are more likely to succeed emotionally, financially, and educationally within a two-parent, mother-father, married family. Marriage, properly defined, matters."

Quote of the Day

“To come out and just say, we’re not going to – I don’t think we’re going to be able pay seniors, I don’t think were going to be able to pay veterans that’s not leadership. That’s why I said it was sad, it was pathetic, it’s fear-mongering and it’s trying to turn people against other folks who are trying to come up with viable solutions. That’s not what I think a president should be doing,”

Sad day for skier Lindsey Vonn...

I find this so sad. She truly earned this medal... American Lindsey Vonn will have to forfeit her Gold Medal on Friday.

Olympic officials stated,"Obama deserved the medal more than Vonn because no one has ever gone downhill faster than Obama."

Quote of the Day

"While Obama has been busy taking over the auto industry, the student loan industry, the healthcare industry, overregulating the financial industry, shutting down the energy industry and trying to raise taxes, our national security may have been severely compromised. But the defense of this nation is the government's first responsibility, its most important duty.

The loss of data, of sensitive intelligence, could be catastrophic. This scandal should have the country outraged. But how many of you heard about this on the evening news?"

Some people have the vocabulary to sum up things in a way you can understand them. This quote came from the Czech Republic. Someone over there has it figured out. We have a lot of work to do.

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."

July 25th: GCRC Alive! in Ruckersville, VA

Most understand that we can only spend what we bring in.

Come to GCRC:Alive! to hear Thomas G. Matthes deliver the story of “The Pencil and the Broken Window” and see how that maxim pertains to Washington and the Debt Limit Talks.

The early 20th Century debate between F. A. Hayek and John Meynard Keynes has reared again amid the fiscal insolvency with our Federal Treasury. Mr. Matthes, journalist, teacher, writer, and historical advisor, will distill economic theory down to everyday examples in our lives.

This open forum is sponsored by The Greene County Republican Committee and will be hosted by The Blue Ridge Café in Ruckersville on Monday evening, July 25th, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Quote of the Day

“It is ridiculous for the current administration to devalue the currency and then complain oil companies have higher profits. Nor is it fair to rail against so-called Big Oil. After all, it is you and I who own Big Oil.

Mutual funds own 29.5 percent. Pension funds own 27.0 percent. Individual investors own 23.0 percent. And 14.0 percent is held in IRAs. About 5 percent is owned by other institutional investors, and only the last 1.5 percent is held by corporate management.”

Quote of the Day

“Today, there are those that would say that America is not great. There are those that believe our nation is no different from other nations around us. There are those that are willing to allow our nation to fall to the same fate as countries like Greece. There are those that would express regret for America’s success. These notions are frightening, because the moment we begin to apologize for America is the moment we begin to spread roots that choke out any seeds of success for our nation. The moment we stop believing that our nation is special is the moment we will cease to be special.

I refuse to buy into the idea that America is mediocre or that she is like any other nation in the world. America is a nation that was born to be extraordinary. The American experiment is worth preserving. Our freedoms are exceptional. And to boast about these freedoms is not only allowable, it is necessary.

I believe America’s greatest days are ahead of us, but we must realize that the direction of our nation's future lies within our own ability to cling to the uniqueness of America. That is what the Fourth of July is. It is a reminder that the freedoms we enjoy as Americans should not just be acknowledged – they should be celebrated.

So this weekend, as you give your child or grandchild that extra popsicle, gather with friends and family at the beach or around the grill, or sit with your loved ones on the old quilted blanket watching the glittering display of fireworks go off in the sky, remember that you are a part of something exceptional. And that exceptionalism is worth celebrating.”
