Appeasement Never Works

By Gary Bauer

There's more bad news out of the Middle East this morning. The U.S. embassy in Yemen was attacked, with radical Muslims scaling the walls, tearing down the U.S. flag, burning vehicles and setting a building on fire. The New York Timesreports that "American missions in Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia" also came under siege.

There are more protests in Egypt today, where the Islamist government of President Mohamed Morsi was slow to condemn the violent protests that took place earlier this week. And at the same time, Morsi is appeasing his radical Islamist allies.

According to Reuters, Morsi said, "All of us Egyptians reject any form of attack or insult to the Prophet." He also reportedly told President Obama about "the need for deterrent legal measures against those who want to damage relations between peoples," and added that he expected "assurances from the U.S. government to prevent any infringement on the sacred." In other words, we must limit our right to free speech and bend to Sharia law.

As I wrote yesterday, this has very little to do with an obscure anti-Muslim movie. There is growing evidence that the Libyan attack was a well-planned assault "that included a precisely timed raid on a supposedly secret safe house."

Unfortunately, the liberal media are still parroting the Islamist line that this latest outburst of violence is about a movie. And, evidently, the rot of political correctness has reached the highest levels of the Pentagon. General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called Pastor Terry Jones "pleading" with him to stop promoting the film that has supposedly caused the riots and attacks.

Disgusting. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs thinks it is more important to limit our free speech rights than to identify the cancer in the heart of Islam. One of Vice President Joe Biden's applause lines is, "GM is alive and Osama bin Laden is dead." Is Gen. Dempsey worried that Joe Biden may be inciting Muslims?

The mob in Cairo wasn't yelling about a movie when it breached the wall around the embassy. They were chanting "Obama, Obama, we are all Osama now!"

When Muslims blow up mosques, burning Korans in the process, there is no rioting. When Muslims throw acid in the faces of little Muslim girls, there is no rioting. When Muslims attack the funerals of other Muslims, there is no rioting. Apparently these things do not offend Muslim sensibilities.

The left celebrates when a cross is submerged in a vat of urine or when Christ is depicted as a homosexual. We're told that's art. We must not succumb to demands that we impose on ourselves a Sharia law standard that permits no criticism of Islam.
