The Obama-Holder DOJ says social media posts that offend Islam may violate civil rights.

Quote of the Day

"Pray tell what could have caused consumers to suddenly have this burst of positive future expectations? Are wages up? Are jobs being created in droves? Is an average price for a gallon of gas at $3.62 inspiring? Are record high beef prices encouraging? Are the 23% increased health insurance premiums bringing them joy?

"We have seen this act before. Confidence has been up and down like a hard headed blind boxer not knowing where to go, or where the next punch is coming from.

"This might be a reason for the unexpected rise in confidence; after Obama said he was focusing like a laser on jobs again, he became distracted with the IRS, AP, Rosen, Fox News, and Benghazi scandals. People know the more Obama leaves jobs alone the better chance they have for jobs."

Action Item: Oppose CRPD

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is back and likely to be reconsidered in June.  Because of you, we defeated this flawed treaty last December.  But the Senate is going to bring it up again, and I'm concerned they'll try to sneak it through quietly while most people are focused on Benghazi, the IRS scandal and recent missteps by the Department of Justice.

Well, we are paying attention and we need your help to defeat it again.

CRPD threatens U.S. sovereignty and parental rights, and if ratified, it would effectively put us under international law when it comes to parenting our special needs children. While CRPD may, on the surface, appear to protect those with disabilities, it actually gives the government the power, with direction from the U.N., to decide what is best for our children.  That is wrong and not something we should see in the United States of America.

If CRPD were ratified and enforced, it would give the U.N. discretion over decisions about how we educate our special needs kids and could potentially eliminate parental rights for the education of children with disabilities.

Patriot Voices is putting the pressure on now to ensure the U.S. Senate does not pass this dangerous treaty.

Please stand with us by emailing your U.S. Senators now and ask them to oppose CRPD.

Thank you for your support,

Rick Santorum

House Judiciary Committee Chairmen Seek Answers on Newborn Homicides

Friend-

In the wake of the Gosnell trial, I thought you would be interested to know that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Goodlatte and Constitution and Civil Justice Subcommittee Chairman Franks sent a letter to all 50 state attorneys general asking whether state and local governments are being hindered in their efforts to protect the civil rights of newborns and their mothers.  The Chairmen have requested that answers to their questions be submitted by June 1st

The Declaration of Independence affirmed that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; the first among these is life.  We must defend the most innocent among us and ensure their right to life.

Yours in service,

Randy

P.S.  I am a cosponsor of the Life at Conception Act, H.R.1091, which declares that the right to life guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution vests in each person from the moment of fertilization.  The bill would guarantee the constitutional right to life for unborn children.

Goodlatte and Franks Seek Answers from State Attorneys General on Newborn Homicides

Washington, D.C. - House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and Constitution and Civil Justice Subcommittee Chairman Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) have sent a letter to all 50 state attorneys general seeking to find out if state and local governments are being stymied in their efforts to protect the civil rights of newborns and their mothers and if the federal government might be able to partner with states to prevent newborn homicides.  The letter asks the state attorneys general to respond to several questions and to provide copies of any official written procedures or guidance that relate to the gathering of information on, or the prosecution of, newborn homicides by June 1, 2013.

This letter follows the shocking allegations against Kermit Gosnell, who is charged with the serial murder of infants, the murder of a female patient, and other felonies committed in the operation of his abortion clinic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The grand jury report found that in Pennsylvania, numerous state and city regulatory agencies failed to adequately prevent violations of the law under a situation the report calls "€œregulatory collapse."

Below are excerpts from the letter.  A copy of one of the letters can be found here.

"By now you are surely aware of the trial of Kermit Gosnell. The Pennsylvania Department of Health, whose job it is to monitor facilities like Gosnell'€™s, conducted sporadic site reviews between 1979 and 1993, citing various violations.  But for "political reasons"€™ the Department of Health decided to stop inspecting abortion clinics at all in 1993.

"We have all been shocked by the tragedy in Pennsylvania, and we know many states have strong laws to protect against these types of murders.  We are simply writing to gather information about these laws and to see how the federal government might partner with states to help prevent similar atrocities.
"We presume that each of you, upon learning of the failures highlighted by the Gosnell trial, have considered what your state governments are doing to ensure that similar crimes could not be perpetrated in your state.  As federal officeholders, we too have an obligation to find out whether newborn infants, €”who are unquestionably persons under the law, regardless of one'€™s views on abortion, €”are being denied their most basic civil rights.  We are seeking to find out if state and local governments are being stymied in their efforts to protect the civil rights of newborns and their mothers by legal or financial obstacles that are within the federal government'€™s power to address."

Faith at a Slow Gallup in U.S.

Tony Perkins
Family Research Council

Most Americans didn't need a poll to tell them that religion is having a lesser impact on society. Like anyone else, they can turn on the television or open the newspaper and attack after attack on faith. Years after purging God from schools, the country is finally feelings its effects.

When Gallup asked Americans if religion was losing its influence in America, 77% of people agreed. Only in the year after September 11, when the nation looked to faith for comfort, did a majority think religion was having a greater impact on the country. As Christians, we feel the gap widening with every lawsuit against cheerleaders' Bible signs or every school board rejection of the 10 Commandments. Even the military, once the most openly spiritual institution in America, is marginalizing Christianity.

So much so, it turns out, that Kansas legislators felt compelled to pass a resolution affirming the military's "200+ years of Judeo-Christian tradition." Led by Sen. Mitch Holmes (R), a veteran himself, the state senate denounced the "documented trend of increasing hostility from special interests toward religious expression by service members..." Holmes circulated a list of 20 incidents of religious intolerance in the military just since 2010 and encouraged leaders to denounce them. They did -- overwhelmingly. Louisiana is hoping to follow their lead, as 25 state leaders cosponsored a similar military freedom resolution (which FRC helped draft).

Meanwhile, many of the same people who told Gallup that religion is having less of an impact say they wish it had more. Seventy-five percent of respondents recognize religion's benefits to society and think it would be good if Americans were more religious. Why? Because nothing offers individuals more purpose and meaning in life -- and nothing else will create a more stable and prosperous society than one that values every human being. Not only do those who have a personal faith benefit -- but all of society benefits from those who see the inherent value in their fellow man and therefore have a moral motivation to help the poor and vulnerable. This Christian foundation is what has set America apart as such a great and compassionate nation -- and without religion, it's only a matter of time until we can no longer maintain it.

The Real Benghazi Scandal

Gary L. Bauer

AMERICAN VALUES

Yesterday we reported that the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee had issued a subpoena to the State Department demanding "all documents and communications referring or relating to the Benghazi talking points." On Fox News last night, columnist Charles Krauthammer offered his thoughts on the possible origin of those talking points. Here's what he suggested could be the real scandal:

"The biggest scandal of all, the biggest question is what was the president doing in those eight hours. He had a routine meeting at five o'clock. He never after during the eight hours when our guys have their lives in danger, he never called the Secretary of Defense, he never calls the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, he never called the CIA Director. …
"But five hours in he calls the Secretary of State. And after the phone call she releases a statement essentially about the video and how we denounce any intolerance. It looks as if the only phone call is to construct a cover story at a time when the last two Americans who died were still alive and fighting for their lives. There's the scandal and that has to be uncovered."

Eric Holder’s Contempt for the Truth

Dear Friend,

On May 15th of this year, I participated in the House Judiciary Committee hearing during which Attorney General Eric Holder testified that he was not involved in "the potential prosecution" of any members of the press for the disclosure of material, further stating, "This is not something I've ever been involved in, heard of, or would think would be wise policy." Subsequently, the American public and this Committee were made aware that Attorney General Holder had in fact been in discussions regarding a search warrant for Fox News correspondent James Rosen's emails and phone records.

The Attorney General's sworn statement was made before the United States Congress and is in direct contrast to those actions reported. It is my belief, as well as the Committee's, that Eric Holder must explain this discrepancy.

This week, I had the opportunity to lead the discussion on Eric Holder's contempt for the truth, appearing on both Hannity and America's Newsroom. Watch below.

Quote of the Day

"It's time for Mr. "I bee-dee man in charge" to take his head out of his teleprompter and shoulder the responsibility that comes with the job.  That includes admitting that he was more interested in going up to the private residence for his 6:30 PM dinner on September 11, 2012, than he was in exercising his leadership to do everything possible to save Ambassador Stevens, Tyrone Woods, Glen Doherty, and Sean Smith.  After all, his dinner was more important than saving four men who proved Al Queda is flourishing in the Middle East precisely because of his lack of leadership.  Being a leader means he should have made sure Eric Holder, Janet Napolitano, and Hillary Clinton were held accountable for Fast and Furious and the murders of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, Jaime Zapata, and the hundreds of innocent Mexicans murdered because of his illegal, international gun-running operation."

Honoring Our Fallen Veterans, Repealing The President’s Health Care Law, And Holding The Administration Accountable For Abuses Of Power

Congressman Robert Hurt

Communicating with the people of Virginia's 5th District and hearing your feedback is very important to us. In order to ensure that we keep you up to date on what is going on from month to month, we record a monthly video address. You may watch the video address on our website at hurt.house.gov, and you may read the address below:

"As we celebrate and honor those who have served and those who are serving on this Memorial Day, we are reminded of those who have sacrificed so much to defend our Constitution and our American way of life. We thank them.

"As your representative, I am committed to doing what I can to also defend our constitution and our liberties. Part of that is returning us to our founding principles of limited government, free enterprise, and individual liberty.

"A new study suggests that federal regulations are posing a threat to these principles. They are costing each American household 14,768 dollars. In 2012, the Code of Federal Regulations hit an all-time high of 174,545 pages. It should be no surprise that laws like Dodd-Frank and the President's healthcare law are contributing significantly to this bureaucratic morass.

"In fact, here next to me sits a 20,000 page, 7-foot-3-inch, 300 pound stack of actual health care regulations that will be imposed on the American people.

"This month, noting the negative affects the President's healthcare law is having in Virginia's 5th District, I once again supported a full repeal of the President's healthcare law. Not only is this law increasing premiums on our families, but it is also harming our small businesses and turning full-time work into part-time work for workers across the 5th District.

"Additionally, in May we took action to tackle more red tape by voting, once again, to pave the way for the Keystone Pipeline's approval. The Northern Route Approval Act is critical to reliable North American energy, lowering fuel prices on our families and small businesses, and creating American jobs.

"And this month we have voted on legislation to hold federal agencies accountable for the cost of the rules and regulations they place on the American people. With bipartisan support, we passed the SEC Regulatory Accountability Act. This commonsense legislation ensures that, like other federal agencies, the SEC must conduct a cost benefit analysis of its rules required by Dodd-Frank and all other rules it implements. This will ensure that the cost of SEC regulations do not outweigh the benefit to the American people.

"Finally, this month we have seen just how threatening a growing federal government can be. The IRS scandal whereby the IRS singled out political opponents for tax scrutiny demonstrates not only a troubling abuse of power by this administration, but also an affront to our constitutionally protected Right of Free Speech. Equally as troubling has been the Justice Department's seizure of journalists' phone records. And, like Virginians across the 5th District, I remain gravely concerned about the Administration's failure to prevent and to be forthcoming about the terrorist attack in Benghazi that left three Americans and a U.S. Ambassador dead.

"Our government, founded on the principle that those who govern do so only with the consent of the governed, necessarily must operate in a transparent manner and be accountable to the American people. Understanding our constitutional duty, the House of Representatives is focused on holding the Administration and its agencies accountable for its actions.

"Let me conclude by congratulating Highland School Junior, Finley Broaddus of Warrenton for being chosen as the 5th District's Congressional Art Competition winner. Her painting, entitled "Vint Hill Church," will hang in our nation's Capitol building along with all other winners from throughout the country. Congratulations, Finley, and thank you to all those throughout the 5th who participated in the contest."

As Moore, Oklahoma continues to rebuild, we keep all of those affected by the tornado in our thoughts and prayers. Americans across our country and we in Virginia's 5th District stand with the people of Moore in this time of need.

Obamacare Backlash Grows

Gary L. Bauer
AMERICAN VALUES

The implementation of Obamacare kicks into high gear on January 1, 2014. As the calendar counts down, even some of the president's liberal allies are finding it impossible to square Obama's rhetoric with reality. One labor union, the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers, has already called for the "repeal or complete reform" of Obamacare. Now other unions are speaking out.

Joe Hansen, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, essentially accused Obama of lying. Hansen told the Associated Press, "[Obamacare] makes an untruth out of what the president said -- that if you like your insurance, you could keep it. That is not going to be true for millions of workers now."

Union bosses assumed that their concerns would be addressed after the 2012 election. In January, a top Teamsters leader said, "We are going back to the administration to say that this is not acceptable." But despite private talks with administration officials, the unions have failed in their attempts to change the law.

As a result, they are warning that liberal politicians could suffer in next year's election. Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Firefighters, warned, "It started out with some anxiety, and I think it's translated into more anger."

I have no expectation that Mr. Schaitberger will become a card-carrying member of the Tea Party movement anytime soon. But politicians who voted for Obamacare should be worried. Union members who are just now learning the truth are not the only ones upset with Obamacare.

Obamacare Deeply Unpopular

Barack Obama and congressional liberals rammed through Obamacare in 2010 after convincing themselves that the public would embrace the healthcare takeover legislation over time. But three years later, two recent polls indicate that Obamacare still remains deeply unpopular.

A CNN poll released yesterday found 54% of adults opposed Obamacare, while just 43% supported it. Last week a Fox News poll found that 56% of voters thought it would be better "to go back to the health care system that was in place in 2009." Just 34% felt we should keep Obamacare.

There was no good news for liberals. Looking ahead, only 26% voters expect Obamacare will make health care better, while 53% say health care will be worse off in the future if Obamacare remains in effect. Even voters 35 and under wanted to get rid of Obamacare by a 20-point margin of 55%-to-35%.

Rep. Robert Hurt Memorial Day Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Robert Hurt (R- Virginia) today released the following video address in honor of Memorial Day:

[View The Video By Clicking Above Or HERE]

Memorial Day Address Text

“Hi, I’m Robert Hurt. It is a great honor to represent the people of Virginia’s Fifth District.

“Today I am at the WWII Memorial here in Washington. Each year, thousands of people visit this memorial to pay their respects and to reflect on the enormous sacrifices of our brave men and women in uniform.

“On this Memorial Day we remember all of those brave men and women who have served – those who have gone before us and those still serving valiantly today. As we stand here in front of this great Memorial, we especially are reminded of those courageous, freedom-loving souls who joined the fight to defeat tyranny - those who defended our great nation and our principles during World War II.

“Etched in the granite walls behind me here at the World War II Memorial is an excerpt from the D-Day message sent by General Dwight Eisenhower just prior to the D-Day invasion on the beaches of Normandy. He wrote, in part, “The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.”

“As liberty-loving Americans, we continue to march with our troops who bravely defend our interests both at home and abroad.  We must always remember that it is because of their service and sacrifice that we live in the freest and most prosperous nation on earth.

“But we well know that freedom has a price. Our hearts are heavy as we learn of our fallen soldiers who pay the ultimate price for freedom. Earlier this year, Virginia’s Fifth District suffered a great loss when Sergeant Robert Billings of Mecklenburg County and Sergeant Greg Copes of Altavista died in the line of fire in Afghanistan.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be their families and with all of those from Southside to Fauquier – and everywhere in between – who are serving our nation, who have served our nation, or who have lost someone to the noble cause of freedom.

“Each day, but on this Memorial Day especially, I hope you will join me in thanking all of those who have given up so much in the name of American liberty, and whose sacrifice and love of country has allowed us to continue to enjoy our American way of life.

“God Bless all of those who have gone before us, and those both at home and abroad who honorably and nobly fight for our great nation. We thank you.”

Happy Memorial Day

This weekend we commemorate the many service men and women who have given "the last full measure of devotion" for our country and our freedom.

The Scripture says, "greater love has no man this, than to lay down his life for his friends." We owe a debt we can never repay to those who have given their lives in defense of our liberty. They have absorbed undeserved punishment. They have suffered in body and mind. They have left behind families to fight in foreign lands and never returned, so that we could cling to our families and not have to leave.

The true heroes are not those of who serve in elected office, but those don a uniform, take an oath to the Constitution and are willing to die for that oath. The true sacrifice is not running a political campaign, but walking through the hell of bullets and bombs in defense of our country. May we never forget them. May we ever be grateful. May we never leave them abandoned on the field of battle. And may we also honor and support those who come home, for the heroes they are. Without them we would not be the greatest nation in history, and because of them we are the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day.

For God & Country,

E.W. Jackson

Memorial Day Weekend

Along the shores of the Potomac, in Arlington National Cemetery, stand the columns of white markers denoting the final resting place of 400,000 men and women who devoted their lives to the freedom we hold dear—many of whom died in its service. They represent but a fraction of the 1.3 million servicemen and women who have given their lives for this country, purchasing our freedom with their sacrifice.

Freedom. It is a simple word, but as Churchill said, "All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope." And what better words are there to describe the principles for which the men and women of our armed forces have fought and often died?

As you and your family commemorate Memorial Day this weekend, I hope you will join me in remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the greatest nation on earth.

We mourn the loss of some of the best among us, men and women who dared to put their lives on the line in defense of our freedom, who answered the call to service in their nation's hour of need. They are a distinctive breed; former President Bush said of them that "they saw a dark shadow on the horizon - and they went to meet it."

I am humbled by the service of the brave men and women of our armed forces who put country before self, who, seeing that dark shadow on the horizon, do not tremble, but stand up to meet the challenge. We are all deeply indebted to those who have served, and on this weekend, we share in the grief of those who have lost a loved one in the horrors of war, but also in expressing our gratitude for those who have purchased our freedom with the last measure of devotion.

Their valor does not require my words to find expression. It is engraved upon the pages of history. It is testified to by their lives as well as ours - lived in freedom purchased by their sacrifice.

As you and your family commemorate this Memorial Day weekend, I hope you will join me in remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the greatest nation on earth.
