Iran Surrounding Israel

 By Gary L. Bauer

One of the most illogical positions held by President Obama is his insistence on not conditioning the Iranian nuclear negotiations on changes in the regime's behavior. Recognizing Israel's right to exist, for example, ought to be the starting point for any talks with Iran.

Does anyone lose sleep at night over the fact that France and Great Britain have nuclear weapons? Of course not. Those nations are stable, peaceful democracies.

But past behavior is often the best predictor of future behavior. And there is nothing in Iran's behavior to suggest that the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism can be trusted with the world's most destructive weapons. Iran is fomenting chaos throughout the Middle East, and it is moving aggressively to surround Israel.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Iran was "rekindling its relationship with Hamas." At first glance, that might seem unlikely given the Shiite (Iran) / Sunni (Hamas) Muslim divide.

But Western intelligence reports indicate that in recent months tens of millions of dollars have been transferred from Iran to Hamas "on the direct orders of Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards' elite Quds Force." Hamas is using the money not for schools, hospitals or job training programs, but to rebuild its terror-tunnel network.

What is this all about? Consider this excerpt from the Journal's report:

"The Revolutionary Guards are eager to revive their relationship with Hamas because it gives them access to Israel's southern border, in addition to the northern border with Lebanon, where Iran funds Hezbollah militants. Tehran is also willing to set aside its sectarian differences with Hamas because its Palestinian militants share the same long-term objectives as the ayatollahs: the complete destruction of the state of Israel."

Family Research Council Files Amicus Brief in US Supreme Court Marriage Case

April 8, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- On March 31st, Family Research Council filed an amicus curiae brief with the U.S. Supreme Court concerning the upcoming April 28th hearing in which the Court will review state definitions of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. These cases have been consolidated under the name of Obergefell v. Hodges.

FRC's brief debunks the argument that the "fundamental right to marry" includes a right to marry a person of the same sex, as well as the contention that limiting marriage to opposite-sex unions constitutes a form of sex discrimination.

The brief also challenges the argument that the male-female marital definition discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation, noting that issuers of marriage licenses have never inquired into the sexual orientation of the (opposite-sex) spouses-to-be.

In a unique observation, FRC highlights (and lists in an appendix) previous same-sex marriage court cases in which one or more of the plaintiffs acknowledged that they had previously been legally married to a person of the opposite sex. This observation demonstrates either that sexual orientation is not immutable, that same-sex-attracted individuals are able to obtain marriage licenses, or both.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement:

"The American people will not accept marriage redefinition by judicial fiat from any court including the Supreme Court. Americans have not reached a 'broad social consensus' on the redefinition of marriage. The Justices need to remember this fact. Judges should not impose on the states something that will only cause deep social division. We continue to hear the narrative from those seeking to redefine our most basic social institution that thirty-seven states have same-sex 'marriage.'

"In reality, voters in only three states have endorsed redefining marriage.

"Americans should be free to uphold marriage as it has always been defined, the union of a man and a woman," concluded Perkins.

FRC Applauds Arkansas Legislature for Overwhelmingly Approving the Religious Freedom Restoration Act

March 31, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Arkansas House of Representatives by a vote of 67 to 21 gave final approval to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). Family Research Council (FRC) has long supported state RFRAs, which have already been enacted in 20 states since 1996 based on the federal law signed by President Bill Clinton.

FRC President Tony Perkins released the following statement:

"Family Research Council applauds the Arkansas legislature for voting to join 20 other states in aligning themselves with federal religious freedom law. Courageously ignoring the rants of the intolerant left against this legislation, Arkansas's Governor and legislators are standing up for the freedom of people to live out their beliefs.

"If there were not a growing hostility toward faith, there wouldn't be a need for RFRAs. As Americans, we have a proud tradition of respecting each other's differences. But, under the policies and influence of the Obama administration, religious intolerance has grown significantly.

"Americans of all political persuasions and all religions who care about the freedom to live according to one's beliefs --without government coercion -- should support RFRAs," concluded Perkins.

Josh Duggar, FRC Action's Executive Director, added the following comments:

"I applaud the 67 members of the Arkansas House of Representatives who voted today to pass H.B. 1228, The Religious Freedom Restoration Act. This bill is simple and to the point — that people cannot be easily trampled by the government simply for living out their religious beliefs. We are thrilled that Gov. Hutchinson has indicated that he will sign this bill affirming that religious freedom is alive and well in Arkansas."
