Congressman Robert Hurt's Independence Day Address

Monday, July 4, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Robert Hurt (R-Virginia) today released his Independence Day Address.  Text of the address is available below, as well as video.  You may view the video by clicking the image below, or by clicking here.

"Hi I'm Robert Hurt. Today, I am at the Jefferson Memorial here in the heart of our nation's capital.  Jefferson was not only our third president, but he was also the author of the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and he was the founder of the University of Virginia. In so many profound ways, he shaped our political philosophy and left his fingerprint on nearly every foundational element of our government.  He  promoted religious freedom and believed in robust public education, understanding that it would be fundamental to the success of our new nation.

"As we celebrate our nation's two hundred and fortieth year of independence, let us reflect upon our Founders' understanding of the fundamental rights of man and their belief that only a system of representative democracy– supported by the rule of law -- would guarantee our God-given rights. It was upon this belief that our Founders pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

"When our Founders signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, they risked all they had for this budding nation and paved the way for the freedoms and opportunities we all enjoy today.  The Declaration of Independence not only called for freedom for the people of this country, but also enshrined the principles of limited government, individual liberty, and free enterprise – the very principles that have made this the greatest country on earth and have served as a beacon of freedom for the world.

"As we celebrate the birth of this great nation, we remember all of those who have sacrificed so much so that we may be free, and those who continue to defend our American way of life for future generations.

"I wish you and your family a happy and safe Fourth of July.

"Thank you, and God Bless America."
