General Assembly Passes Fiscally Irresponsible Budget –
Expands Medicaid
Dear Patriots, (Thank you Senator Suetterlein for this excellent explanation of the history/consequences of the General Assembly votes to expand Medicaid)
Today the General Assembly passed a fiscally irresponsible budget that is going to have dramatic consequences for taxpayers and core services in the Commonwealth for years to come. Even before the Medicaid Expansion envisioned by this budget, Medicaid has consumed an ever increasingly large portion of the budget for several years.
In 2004 the General Assembly passed a tax increase that was justified as being needed for education – the unappreciated reality at the time was that significant growth of Medicaid spending was diminishing the Commonwealth's ability to meet other spending priorities.
In 2013 the General Assembly passed a $6 Billion tax increase that was justified as being for transportation. There is much debate about where transportation funds should come from, but the reality was again the significant growth of Medicaid was diminishing the Commonwealth's ability to meet its other spending priorities.
This year, the General Assembly passed tax increases on hospitals [patients/insurance companies], fuel, lodging, and land transfers. It also passed a large bill that will benefit electric utility monopolies at the expense of Virginia's families and businesses.
The budget passed today is built on a fiscally irresponsible Medicaid Expansion policy that will benefit several healthcare providers that are almost monopolies while hurting Virginia taxpayers.
The General Assembly has not watched out for the pocketbook interests of Virginian's families and businesses. Within a short period of time, we will be hearing calls for a tax increase to offset the fiscally irresponsible actions taken today.
