Congressman Robert Hurt Statement On December Unemployment Report

“We Must Act Now”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Robert Hurt (R-Virginia) released the following statement after the Department of Labor issued the December unemployment report:

“With unemployment rates ticking upward last month, we are starkly reminded of how important it is to adopt policies in Washington that will get our economy back on track now. Just this past week, by choosing to delay necessary spending reforms, we missed an opportunity to cut spending and make meaningful strides toward the economic recovery we need. For far too long, the people of Virginia’s 5th District have suffered through a stagnant economy marked by joblessness and plagued by tax uncertainty, over-regulation, and crippling federal debt. We must change direction and we must act now.

“A new year and a new Congress give us a renewed ability to turn the course by paying down our debt and creating the jobs that so many in our district and across this country need. Our economy cannot grow and our farmers’ and small business owners’ hands will not be untied until Washington removes the threat of a $16 trillion debt that prevents our job creators from hiring and expanding.  We in the House have worked tirelessly over the past two years to adopt measures that will encourage job creation, but we need a Senate and a White House to join with us. On behalf of 5th District Virginians, I remain committed to continuing our work from the last two years and reaching across the aisle to adopt policies that will restore us to fiscal sustainability, create jobs in Virginia’s 5th District, and preserve this great nation and its opportunities for our children and grandchildren.”
