America's Got Buyer's Remorse, He's No FDR

Friday, July 30, 2021

By Gary Bauer

A lot of insiders here in Washington, particularly at the White House, were privately shocked this week. New polling from the Biden-friendly left-wing media showed that optimism about America's future and the direction of our country dropped by 20 points. That's an unprecedented decline in confidence. Additional polling shows it's not a fluke. (Here and here.)

The Washington insiders just can't figure it out. Why are Americans so upset and worried? Let me help them sort it out.

In the last 24 hours, 6,000 people crossed our southern border. This has been happening every single day since Joe Biden took office. Many of these illegal aliens have COVID. And Biden won't do anything to stop it.

But Biden was busy yesterday spreading fear to American citizens. White House officials are telling us to mask up again and suggesting that more lockdowns could be coming soon. None of that rhetoric is based on science. They're fearmongering because COVID has enabled the left to massively move America toward big government socialism.

By the way, let me remind you that during last year's campaign Joe Biden said he had a plan to stop COVID. Biden lied, and people died.

But it doesn't stop there.

In short, it's hard to be optimistic in Joe Biden and Kamala Harris's America. And their falling poll numbers show that many Americans are having buyer's remorse.

He's No FDR

As I noted above, Biden's fearmongering is totally unjustified. Some in the administration are now comparing the Delta variant to Ebola

Maybe it has a similar rate of transmissibility, but that's where any comparison ends. It would be more accurate to say it's like the common cold or spreads like the flu, because if you're vaccinated the outcome is about the same. Conjuring up images of Ebola, a super deadly virus, is a deliberately irresponsible effort to scare people.

Yes, the Delta variant appears to be more contagious. Perhaps at some point we'll discover that it's more dangerous. But right now, the data do not support that conclusion

COVID deaths are at their lowest levels since the pandemic began. If you're vaccinated, you're at greater risk from lightning strikes, bee stings and car crashes.

While it's not entirely clear what the CDC is basing its decisions on, the buzz is that it involved a study that was rejected after peer review and based on a vaccine that isn't used in the U.S. If true, the agency is destroying whatever credibility it has left.

Meanwhile, as one sensible journalist points out, the experience in other countries suggests that the Delta variants comes on fast and disappears just as quickly. A leading European economist noted, "The current Delta wave in the U.K. is turning out to be much, much milder than we anticipated."

Yet, the Biden Administration is ranting about Ebola.

During the depths of the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt rallied the American people by telling them, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Joe Biden's no FDR. This president is telling us the only thing he's got is fear.

If Biden isn't fearmongering over COVID, he's race baiting or setting his hair on fire over climate change. The only messages we're getting from the White House are:

"COVID is going to get you!"

"If you escape COVID, white nationalists are going to get you!"

"And if you escape the Klan, the sun is going to get you!"

I'm surprised confidence in the future fell only 20 points!

What's Going On

July 23, 2021

By Gary Bauer

I generally don't believe in conspiracy theories. But all the contradictory messages coming out of Washington lately just don't add up.

Have you noticed that the Biden Administration and its media allies are going into panic mode again? There's talk of reinstating the mask mandate. Just a few weeks ago, they took credit for ending the mask mandate.

There's talk that schools may not be able to open with any degree of normalcy. Some people on Wall Street think we may soon see the president and surgeon general on TV declaring, "Just 15 days to flatten the curve." The last time we did that, 15 days turned into a year.

Meanwhile, they're trying to censor any dissent on social media. Something doesn't add up.

They're hinting you may have to close your school and business again, but they've opened our southern border. There's talk of lockdowns, while 6,000 people a day are pouring into the country across the border.

They want to knock on your door to make sure you're vaccinated, but the number of illegal immigrants with COVID has skyrocketed. There's talk of mandating vaccines for American citizens, but at least 30% of the illegal immigrants entering the country have refused to take the vaccine.

The Biden Administration says it's just trying to save lives. But it's aggressively pushing abortion on demand, which kills thousands of healthy unborn children every day.

It just doesn't add up.

I think the evidence is growing that we are being led by quasi-Marxists who intend to rule us, not govern us. They are intent on "fundamentally transforming" America by demographically transforming America through massive illegal immigration. They believe open borders and amnesty will guarantee their power forever.

Cubans Not Welcome

Wednesday, July 14, 2021

By Gary Bauer

In his strongest statement yet regarding the border crisis, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said yesterday that Cubans should not get on a boat and attempt to flee communist Cuba.

Now, I'm not advocating for another Mariel boatlift. I want Cubans to fight for their country and restore liberty there.

But I couldn't help but wonder why Mayorkas was creating a completely different standard for people attempting to escape oppression in Cuba while people from 160 nations are crossing our wide-open southern border in record numbers.

Aren't Cubans fleeing communist oppression the very definition of "refugees"? So why isn't the Biden Administration welcoming Cuban refugees?

The only thing I can think of is that Cuban immigrants stand out because they understand communism and vote for pro-free enterprise, pro-freedom conservative candidates. But surely such brazen politics can't be the answer. Or is it?

China & Cuba

The communist regime in China yesterday issued multiple statements expressing solidarity with the communist regime in Cuba. Beijing declared that Cuba's problems had nothing to do with communism and were the fault of the U.S. boycott of the island. Once again, the Chinese communists sounded a lot like the American left

I couldn't help but notice yesterday that Joe Biden expressed far more anger toward conservatives trying to pass election integrity laws than he has ever expressed toward either communist regime in Beijing or Havana that doesn't allow free elections.

And here's an interesting point raised by Senator Marco Rubio: Has the Biden Administration warned China and Russia against sending special forces to prop up the Cuban regime? If Xi and Putin do send troops, what does anyone think this administration would do about it?

Biden’s ICE Nominee Is an Anti-ICE, Anti-Borders Activist

July 15, 2021

IRLI investigation shows Ed Gonzalez's track record of opposing immigration enforcement

WASHINGTON—While Sheriff Ed Gonzalez sounded like a reasonable moderate in his first day of confirmation hearings as the Biden administration's nominee to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), he has a track record of opposing the agency's core mission and other programs designed to protect Americans from violent criminal aliens.

An investigation by the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) examined the history of Gonzalez, currently sheriff of Harris County, Texas, which includes Houston. The findings raise serious questions about Gonzalez's fitness for this critical post.

Gonzalez has a history of repeatedly attacking immigration enforcement agencies including ICE. In his five years as sheriff, Gonzalez has also implemented policies intended to kneecap local cooperation with ICE.

Almost immediately upon entering office, Gonzalez terminated the Harris County Sheriff's Office 287(g) program in February 2017, ending an effective cooperation agreement that helps ICE locate, apprehend and deport criminal illegal aliens.

In June 2018, Gonzalez spoke out against the Trump administration's attempt to control illegal immigration at the southern border, saying the following: "Separating families harms children. To me, it's an affront to our American values."  Gonzales doubled down on these comments in a subsequent tweet: "Separating families who arrive at our border harms children and is an affront to American values. Children should not be in immigration detention, period".

In July 2019, Gonzalez took to Twitter to denounce ICE raids, writing "I do not support #ICERaids that threaten to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, the vast majority of whom do not represent a threat to the U.S. The focus should always be on clear & immediate safety threats. Not others who are not threats."

ICE representatives have stated on numerous occasions that the focus of raids is criminal aliens, not those whose only crime is illegal entry into the country. When sheriffs like Ed Gonzalez terminate 287(g) programs, it forces ICE agents to conduct raids in homes, creating a far more dangerous situation to all parties compared to the controlled environment of a local jail.

As a member of the Houston city council and mayor pro tempore at the time, Gonzalez also took part in a 2015 trip to China that was funded by an organization called Houston EB5, an advocacy group for EB-5 visas, according to the Washington Free Beacon. The controversial EB-5 program allows rich foreign nationals to obtain U.S. visas in exchange for million-dollar investments in U.S. projects.

Gonzalez's nomination has the full-throated support of anti-borders activists, including Al Noorani, president and CEO of the National Immigration Forum, and Ruby Powers, spokesperson for the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

"Ed Gonzalez is a radical anti-borders activist," said Dale L. Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of IRLI. "Only in the Biden administration could we get a person with such extreme anti-ICE beliefs nominated to actually lead ICE. At a time when our borders are being overrun and criminal aliens are being released back into communities, picking someone who has repeatedly opposed efforts to enforce immigration law to lead ICE is highly irresponsible. The Senate should reject this nomination."

Gonzalez is currently being questioned by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee as part of the confirmation process.

Trump Wins Again

July 12, 2021

By Gary Bauer

More than 1,500 conservative activists gathered in Dallas, Texas, for a CPAC event this weekend. Former President Donald Trump addressed the crowd, as he has done for many years now. He fired up the boisterous audience for 90 minutes, and made the case of the conservative agenda like few can.

Not surprisingly, Trump dominated CPAC's poll, taking 70% of the vote in a hypothetical 2024 primary. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis finished second with 21%. No other candidate got more than 1%. If Trump doesn't run in 2024, 68% of CPAC attendees chose DeSantis as their candidate.

Trump is clearly in a category all by himself in his ability to energize the conservative base.

In much the same way that the Reagan agenda essentially redefined the mainstream of the Republican Party, Trump's "America First" agenda represents the new Republican Party. For example, Trump criticized how ineptly Joe Biden has handled the withdrawal from Afghanistan. But he did not question the need to get out after 20 years.

Trump talks naturally about middle America, just as Reagan did. Reagan was a movie star, and Trump has been called a "blue-collar billionaire." Both understood the values that animate Middle America, and why so Americans feel betrayed by our corporate, cultural and political elites.

Here's some advice for the other potential 2024 contenders stuck in the single digits: If you want to be in the top tier, you must embrace the Reagan/Trump working-class vision for America. By the way, working-class people come in all colors.

IRLI, Texas Sheriffs Move to Enjoin Biden Enforcement Ban

July 9, 2021

Motion demands quick return to detention and removal

WASHINGTON—Last night, the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI), representing a group of Texas sheriffs, Texas counties, and a membership organization of immigration-enforcement officers, filed for a preliminary injunction in Texas federal court against the Biden administration policy of prohibiting immigration officers from taking enforcement actions against removable aliens. In this suit, IRLI has teamed up with President Trump confidante and former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, formerly Of Counsel for IRLI.

In an agency memo, the administration instructed border enforcement agents not to detain or remove the vast majority of aliens, including dangerous alien criminals, whom the law clearly states must be detained and removed. Not only is this policy contrary to law, the motion shows, but it also was issued without explanation and without notice and a chance for public comment—all defects that require the policy to be struck down.

One result of this policy is skyrocketing crime in the plaintiffs' counties, and the resulting need for sheriffs and their counties to expend resources capturing, prosecuting, and incarcerating a rising tide of illegal alien criminals whom federal immigration officers refuse to pick up and deport. Also, the policy contributes greatly to the general collapse of enforcement at the border, which is responsible for the current crisis.

The motion also describes this policy in action. For example, aliens convicted of sexual battery on a child, domestic violence, and drunk driving have been released under the policy onto the streets and highways of America.

"The Biden enforcement ban we seek to strike down is not only terrible policy, it is flat-out illegal," said Dale L. Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of IRLI. "The administration is bound to follow the law and the Constitution, and cannot just instruct immigration officers to forsake their duty. We hope the court sees the unlawfulness of this non-enforcement memo and enjoins it swiftly."

The case is Coe v. Biden, No. 3:21-cv-00168 (S.D. Texas).

Fighting For Freedom

Wednesday, July 7, 2021

By Gary Bauer

Former President Donald Trump announced this morning that he is launching a major class action lawsuit against the Big Tech giants – Facebook, Google and Twitter. Trump is seeking a court order demanding "an end to shadow banning, blacklisting, banishing" and other forms of social media censorship, which he denounced as "completely unlawful and un-American."

Here are a few excerpts of the president's remarks:

"Freedom of speech has always been understood as a bedrock of our liberty. . . It is not granted to us by government, but by God, and no one should have the power to take that right away.

"The founding fathers inscribed this right in the very First Amendment to our Constitution because they knew it was essential to the preservation of our Republic. In the words of George Washington, 'If freedom of speech may be taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led like sheep to the slaughter.'

"Unfortunately, today, this fundamental right and liberty is under incredible threat. . .  Social media has given extraordinary power to a group of big tech giants that are working with government, the mainstream media and a large segment of a political party to silence and suppress the views of the American people."

Trump noted how Facebook, YouTube and Twitter banned any discussion of COVID-19 originating from communist China. Well, guess what? Now even the Washington Post editorial board says it's "time to get serious about finding" the truth. Better late than never, I suppose.

Trump warned that there is "no better evidence that Big Tech is out of control" than the fact that "they banned the sitting president of the United States. . . If they can do it to me, they can do it to you and anyone else."

Underscoring that very point, Trump introduced several people who have also been banned by Big Tech who are joining the president's lawsuit.

One is a Wisconsin teacher who questioned the need for children to wear masks at all times in school. Another is a Colorado doctor who was banned for posting a video on how churches could safely reopen during the pandemic. Big Tech also banned two black "Angel parents," whose son was killed by an illegal alien. Their advocacy for commonsense immigration laws got them kicked off Twitter.

President Trump vowed to carry this battle beyond the courts to state legislatures and the ballot box.
