Family Research Council Submits Comment Backing Trump Administration Religious Liberty Rule

September 17, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Family Research Council filed a comment yesterday in support of a proposed rule by the Trump Administration's Department of Labor's (DOL) Office of Federal Contract Compliance (OFCCP) which will protect religious liberty. The rule is titled "Implementing Legal Requirements Regarding the Equal Opportunity Clause's Religious Exemption" and will require federal agencies to allow faith adherents to compete for federal contracts on an equal footing with anyone else.

FRC's comment notes:

"Protecting religious liberty is intrinsic to the fabric of our society and has been from the foundation of this nation. The government must treat religious adherents with neutrality, not hostility, allowing those that practice a faith to be treated equally before the government. The protections laid out in the DOL's proposed rule reaffirm the foundational principle that faith adherents must be afforded the same opportunities to participate in federal contracting as any other person. These protections are not new to government contracting, and they should continue to be affirmed--as they are in this proposed rule--so that religious organizations may remain free and able to contribute to the public good of our society."

Mary Beth Waddell, Senior Legislative Assistant at Family Research Council and one of the co-authors of FRC's comment, remarked:

"With this proposed rule, the Department of Labor is upholding the long-held American ideal that faith does not have to be checked at the door of an individual's home or house of worship, and people should be free to believe as they engage with the government and in the public square."

The complete comment submitted by Family Research Council can be viewed here.

UVA College Republicans Weekly Update, Upcoming Events

Updates

Call Nights

On Monday, we held our first call night of the semester, and although we were already aware of the great number of CRs eager to start campaigning, we were truly blown away by the attendance. Volunteers made calls for Delegate Chris Jones, Ian Lovejoy, and Randy Minchew. As the person who managed all of the call nights on Grounds for Congressman Riggleman's campaign last year, I can tell you that none of last year's attendance numbers were as high - and that was for a congressional race!

In fact, the call night was such a success that we booked a library room last minute and held another one on Thursday night! Needless to say, there's no shortage of enthusiasm among this chapter for holding our majorities!

Event with Chris Runion

On Thursday, a delegation attended a fundraiser for Chris Runion, our candidate in the 25th House of Delegates district. In addition to hearing from Mr. Runion, we also had the privilege of being addressed by Governor George Allen and RPV Chairwoman Kate Obenshain. Several of our new members attended, and were thrilled to meet Governor Allen for the first time!

Upcoming Events

CRFV Deployment

This upcoming weekend, the College Republican Federation of Virginia (CRFV) is holding its first of three statewide deployments. CRs from across the Commonwealth will gather in Richmond to knock for Senator Glen Sturtevant and Garrison Coward for delegate. Needless to say, we'll be sending a group of eager volunteers!

Weekly Meeting: Danielle D'Souza Gill

This Thursday, we'll be hosting conservative activist Danielle D'Souza Gill at 7PM in Monroe 122, and would love to see you there! Paid parking is available at the UVA Bookstore (only $1/per hour after 5). If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me (email: crt3vm@virginia.edu). See you there!

If you would like to donate to support our efforts to elect strong Republican candidates and help us grow our conservative community, you can do so by clicking the following link or by mailing cash or a check payable to "The College Republicans at the University of Virginia" to 304 14th St. NW #25, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
