FRC Praises Trump Administration's Plan to Directly Address Needs of Christians in Middle East

October 27, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Trump administration announced this week that it would address the needs of the Middle East's Christian community by providing assistance directly, bypassing UN aid programs which have been largely ineffective in helping displaced Christians affected by ISIS.

The announcement came as Vice President Pence spoke to a gathering addressing persecution of Christians:

"Our fellow Christians and all who are persecuted in the Middle East should not have to rely on multinational institutions when America can help them directly. And tonight, it is my privilege to announce that President Trump has ordered the State Department to stop funding ineffective relief efforts at the United Nations. And from this day forward, America will provide support directly to persecuted communities through USAID."

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins remarked:

"The Trump administration announcement is welcomed news to families and individuals in the Middle East who have lost their homes, their jobs and even friends and family at the hands of ISIS. I commend the president for following through on his promise to protect religious freedom by ensuring that the vulnerable among us are not targeted because of their religion, and are able to rebuild their lives and freely live out their faith in their ancestral homelands. I look forward to seeing the needs of these communities met on the ground, and stand ready to assist the president in making this happen. In the Middle East and elsewhere, America must do more to ensure that the human right of freedom of religion is cherished the world over," noted Perkins.

Travis Weber, Family Research Council's Director of the Center for Religious Liberty, also commented on the Trump administration's plan:

"While our attention has been riveted by stories of ISIS's defeat, the Christian communities left devastated in its wake will still need to rebuild and attempt to move on with their lives. For too long, the persecuted Christians of the Middle East--lacking political power and overlooked in the eyes of the world--have not received proper assistance in returning to their ancestral lands, the same lands the first Christians walked nearly 2,000 years ago. Meanwhile, Iran and other power players are trying to come in and ply their influence in the vacuum created by ISIS's defeat. It is in these situations that protecting the freedom of religion--and inculcating society with a true understanding of this right--is most critical," observed Weber.

FRC Praises Senate for Rejecting Religious Test, Confirming Amy Barrett to 7th Circuit Court of Appeals

31 Oct 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Amy Barrett for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, along with seven other senators spoke out yesterday in support of Amy Barrett ahead of the confirmation vote. Senator Dianne Feinstein, during Barrett's confirmation hearing, questioned whether Barrett would be able to perform her duties as circuit court judge because Barrett was a practicing Catholic. Feinstein was quoted commenting to Barrett, "the dogma lives loudly within you."

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins commented on Barrett's confirmation:

"We commend the U.S. Senate for confirming Amy Barrett today and by doing so, the U.S. Senate roundly rejected the unconstitutional idea that Americans should be forced to choose between their faith and public service, even as a judge. Amy Barrett did not waiver in the face of Senator Feinstein's open hostility toward her faith and the American people quickly rallied to her defense.

"As a country based on the rule of law, we need judges who will impartially and fairly apply the law, not craft it according to their ideology or political views. If Feinstein were not biased in her opinions, she would have seen the very writings she used to criticize Ms. Barrett clearly demonstrate that she will adhere to the rule of law, and fairly and neutrally decide the cases before her. The president is doing his job nominating sound judges who will do their job and not engage in activism. The Senate, despite Democrat obstructionism, rightfully confirmed Amy Barrett," Perkins concluded.

Federal Judge Usurps Role of Commander-In-Chief in Blocking Transgender Military Policy says FRC

October 30, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Family Research Council criticized today's injunction by U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly that blocks enforcement of parts of President Trump's transgender military policy.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, a Marine veteran, released the following statement:

"This is where judicial activism is leading us. The courts have moved beyond legislating on the invented rights of abortion and same-sex marriage to clearly usurping the constitutional authority of the executive branch. The president has the primary task of protecting Americans but we see the courts weakening his immigration policies designed to protect America from threats and now telling the commander-in-chief how to run the military," concluded Perkins.

Court Ruling Striking Down Clergy Housing Allowance Another Example of Hostile Environment Created b

October 9, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Family Research Council today criticized a ruling by U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb declaring the clergy housing tax allowance unconstitutional. Family Research Council's "Watchmen on the Wall" pastors network is composed of over 40,000 churches from across the country for whom this issue is of great importance.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement:

"The anti-faith environment created by the Obama administration goes a long way to explaining why such a lawsuit could be deemed to be anything more than religious harassment. Militant secularists have a longstanding friend in Judge Crabb who is infamous for striking down the National Day of Prayer as being unconstitutional.

"Going back to Patrick Henry in 1785, society has tried to relieve the clergy's housing burden because of the tremendous social benefits churches offer the culture and because so many clergy, despite their exceptional educations, receive only modest salaries. Congress has used tax-breaks and incentives to encourage that which is beneficial to society as a whole.

"I'd like to ask Judge Crabb: Where are the atheist-run soup kitchens, clothes closets, relief agencies, orphanages, adoption agencies, counselors, and hospitals. No, it is the pastor-led churches that primarily provide these benefits to communities and society in general. Americans donate over $100 billion to religious charities, including churches, every year because they believe it makes a positive difference. Churches have been central to the relief efforts in the aftermath of hurricane damage in Southeast Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.

"I believe this case will mirror the outcome in the National Day of Prayer case: in embarrassment for Judge Crabb," concluded Perkins.

FRC Applauds DOJ Guidance Protecting Religious Freedom, Exempting from Oppressive HHS Mandate

October 6, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Family Research Council applauded two major actions today by the Trump administration that safeguard religious freedom. The Department of Justice (DOJ) is directing federal agencies to respect religious freedom while the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is exempting religious entities from the oppressive Obama contraceptive mandate.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement:

"After eight years of the federal government's relentless assault on the First Amendment, the Trump administration has taken concrete steps today that will once again erect a bulwark of protection around American's First Freedom -- religious freedom.

"President Trump is demonstrating his commitment to undoing the anti-faith policies of the previous administration and restoring true religious freedom. Last May, the president ordered the federal government to vigorously promote and protect religious liberty --and now the DOJ and HHS are moving to make that order a reality.

"Under the Obama administration, agencies lost the understanding that religious freedoms extend to the public square, not just one's place of worship. As a result, our own government began threatening hardworking, patriotic Americans with crushing fines for simply seeking to live their lives according to their faith.

"President Trump and the Department of Justice are putting federal government agencies on notice: you will not only respect the freedom of every American to believe but live according to those beliefs. This is a freedom that has been a fundamental part of our society since the beginning of our nation.

"To aid the Trump administration's efforts in vigorously promoting and protecting religious liberty, Family Research Council today is launching a web hotline for those who believe that they have suffered discrimination at the hands of federal agencies based on their religious beliefs or practices. The 'Free to Believe' hotline will help ensure that no federal employee, contractor or citizen will be forced to choose between their faith and equal treatment by the federal government.

"As President Trump continues to follow through on his promises on these core issues, he will continue to have the support of social conservatives on his policy initiatives," concluded Perkins.

FRC's Tony Perkins Speaks at Senate News Conference Introducing Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection

October 5, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today Family Research Council President Tony Perkins participated in a news conference alongside U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Senator James Lankford (R-Okla.) and other pro-life leaders to formally introduce the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in the Senate. The legislation passed the House of Representatives yesterday by a vote of 237-189.

Perkins commented at the news conference:

"This is not rocket science. A baby at five months in utero feels pain. If the child were undergoing a corrective medical procedure either outside the womb or inside the womb, the child would be given anesthesia. What is happening in America is inhumane.

"It has been mentioned that our country is in a scandalous league of nations when it comes to the treatment of unborn children. If America wants to draw distinctions between itself and rogue nations like North Korea -- this is a good place to start. The Senate should take up and pass without delay the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. I look forward to seeing the president who is committed to this, signing it into law," Perkins concluded.
