EMET Voices Deep Concern About the Dangers of Media Mainstreaming Anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial

(Washington, D.C., January 16, 2020)

Today, the Endowment for Middle East Truth, an unabashedly pro-America and pro-Israel organization committed to challenging misrepresentation, is voicing its deep concern with the decision by a number of national media outlets in recent months to provide a platform and voice to a fringe hate group led by Nick Fuentes.
 
While we appreciate that every American has a First Amendment right to free speech, the national media also has a responsibility to fairly and accurately convey the origins and motivations behind hate speech, and not mislead the American people. 
 
The consequences of giving a national platform to hate are more serious than ever given the recent outburst of anti-Semitic violence in the United States.  
 
Yet, as former Emergency Committee for Israel Executive Director Noah Pollak wrote in the Washington Times recently, "National media outlets tend to be quick to ideologically categorize people into one camp or another to fit stories into familiar political narratives and to tarnish opponents with the misdeeds of extremists."
 
In a misguided effort to attempt to shine a light on purported divisions within a major political party, the national media has given attention to Fuentes and his followers, who call themselves "Groypers."
 
The result is that far too often, Fuentes is not described as an anti-Semite that relentlessly singles out American Jews for attack and conspiracy-theorizing, and promotes the old trope that American Jews trick the United States to fight wars for Israel.
 
The Washington Post, for example, called Fuentes "a 21-year-old YouTube flamethrower" who has "illuminated tensions within the conservative political movement." Fuentes, the Post declared, is a "far-right agitator." NBC News recently characterized Fuentes' activism as creating a fight between "middle-of-the-road conservatives" and those further right, as if the spectrum of support in a major political party runs from moderate to Holocaust deniers – because on multiple occasions, Fuentes has done just that. A few examples:
 

• Fuentes Has Likened The Holocaust To Cookies In The Oven. "Malkin's ouster from [Young America's Foundation, a conservative youth organization] comes after she celebrated Fuentes — most famous for denying the Holocaust by equating victims to cookies in an oven — as 'one of the New Right leaders.' She also smeared Ben Shapiro for disavowing Fuentes and his ilk. (That Shapiro did this should not be shocking, considering that he's an Orthodox Jew and an actually decent human being.)" (Tiana Lowe, "Michelle Malkin Is Betting That Nick Fuentes And His Racism Are The Right's Future," Washington Examiner, 11/18/19)

• Fuentes: "If I Take One Hour To Cook A Batch Of Cookies And Cookie Monster Has Fifteen Ovens, Working Twenty Four Hours A Day For Five Years, How Long Does It Take Cookie Monster To Make Six Million Batches Of Cookies? I Don't Know, That's A Good Questions." (Video 10)

• Fuentes Said "In This Hypothetical" Smokestacks Were "Not Visible," Although You Would "Need To See Certain Smokestacks." "And in addition, in this hypothetical I imagine that if you took aerial photographs over the kitchens you would need to see certain smokestacks to release the smoke from baking the cookies. And the smokestacks would project certain shadows, but I guess they're not visible in the aerial photographs taken over the kitchens." (Video 10) 

It is critical that Fuentes and his "Groypers" be denied the support of the media in their effort to incorporate their platform of white grievance identity politics, conspiracy theories, anti-Semitism, and resentment into the political consciousness of Americans.
 
"Just as we would like to point out that the anti-Semitic comments of Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib do not represent the true beliefs of the preponderance of members of the Democratic party; nor do the anti-Semitic comments of Nick Fuentes and his so called "Groypers" represent those of  the preponderance of members of the Republican party," said Sarah Stern, Founder and President of EMET. "The vast majority of Americans of both parties are infinitely better than that. Journalists have a professional responsibility not to exaggerate or engage in fear mongering. At a time of heightened partisan polarization, this sort of journalism is antithetical to what our country needs at this point."

"Cards on the table: I agree with this expert. I think the leaders of Iran had to save face in front of their people and the world after the U.S. brazenly murked their country's second most-important person at an international airport. After the huge crowds at the funeral, and the open weeping by the ayatollah at the funeral, they had to do something and it had to look tough.

"So they fired some missiles in such a way that they did not kill anyone. Intentionally. Because they were deathly afraid of many, many more murkings raining down from the sky should they kill American troops.

"That's what I think.

Now, to add to the insanity of the past day, mere hours after Iran shot their BB guns at us, a commercial Boeing 737 crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran, killing all 176 on board. Seriously.

Iran immediately said it was a technical failure that caused the crash. Then they announced that they were not going to turn over the black box with flight data. Then some aviation experts came out and said the plane crash was likely a "shootdown event." They provide pictures.

Watch the video; the plane is on fire as it falls out of the sky.

I would not be surprised if Iran, on pins and needles waiting for a response from the U.S. military, shot down this airliner by mistake. I don't know this, of course, but I think it is likely.

If THAT all weren't enough for you, two earthquakes hit Iran's nuclear site mere hours after the plane crash. Seriously.

So here's what happened in Iran in 24 hours:

• A stampede during the funeral procession for Gen. Soleimani killed at least 56 and injured hundreds.
• Gen. Soleimani was buried.
• Iran launched missile attacks against U.S. air bases in Iraq as revenge for Soleimani's killing.
• A Boeing 737 passenger jet crashed minutes after takeoff from Tehran, killing all 176 passengers and crew members on board.
• Two major earthquakes rattled Iran's only nuclear site.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that this morning Iranian leaders were weeping once again, only this time with joy, after listening to Trump indicate that they were not all going to die today."

FRC Files Amicus Brief in Louisiana Abortion Case Taken by Supreme Court

January 8, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Family Research Council (FRC) has submitted an amicus brief in the case of June Medical Services v. Gee, which is currently before the U.S. Supreme Court. At issue is a Louisiana law (Act 620) that protects women's health by requiring persons who perform abortion procedures to also maintain admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. Abortion facilities in Louisiana sued to block the law from taking effect.

In our amicus brief, we argue:

"The admitting-privileges requirement of Act 620 is a legitimate and sensible health-and-safety regulation that falls squarely within the State's police powers. This Court has long recognized that the State has a significant role to play in regulating the medical profession, and that abortion providers do not have a constitutional exemption from health-and-safety regulations."

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins remarked:

"As someone who worked on the first version of this law decades ago, I'm glad to see the effort to protect women from often unsanitary and unsafe environments advance through subsequent generations. Congressman files IRLI-drafted brief against government by lawsuit

 

WASHINGTON – On behalf of Congressman Andy Barr of Kentucky, the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) has filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the Trump administration in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, where the House of Representatives is appealing a district court's decision to dismiss its suit meant to stop the administration from using emergency funds to build a border wall.

 

In 2018, following a lengthy government shutdown, President Trump signed a spending bill that included very inadequate funding for a wall. He then declared a national emergency at the border – thus, under laws passed by previous Congresses, acquiring the power to unlock certain federal funds meant for emergencies and devote them to wall construction. In response, majorities in both the House and Senate passed a joint resolution to terminate the emergency, but Trump vetoed this measure. Then, claiming that Trump's actions were an "end-run" around the prerogative of the House of Representatives to appropriate funds, the House sued.

 

The district court (agreeing with the brief IRLI filed at that stage) tossed out the suit for lack of jurisdiction. In its brief opposing the House's appeal of that decision, IRLI shows that the House's suit is based on the false premise that Trump is defying the will of Congress. In fact, Congress can enact its will only through laws. By following the law Congress passed, Trump is defying not Congress, but only the wishes of the House and Senate majorities.

 

"The leadership of the House of Representatives got beaten politically by President Trump; now it seeks to reverse its fortunes in court," said Dale L. Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of IRLI. "But for politicians to run to court when votes don't go their way is unhealthy for our democracy, to say the least. If the current House majority doesn't like the result President Trump pulled off, it must find a political solution if it can – for whether Trump's policy is a good one is a political question, to be decided ultimately by the votes of the people, not unelected federal judges."

 

The case is U.S. House of Representatives v. Mnuchin, No. 19-5176 (D.C. Circuit).

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "dropped the mic" on Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, who seemed concerned about President Trump's ability to serve as commander-in-chief.  Consider this exchange:
 
WALLACE:  "Some analysts suggest that the impeachment of President Trump has emboldened enemies like Iran and North Korea.  Do you think . . .  that some of our enemies think that this president is more vulnerable because of the impeachment effort?"

POMPEO:  "You should ask Mr. Soleimani."
 
But as we know, Mr. Soleimani is not available for comment.

Benghazi vs. Baghdad

When news of the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad broke, there was a strange reaction on the left.  Many progressives seemed happy about it, almost cheering for the worst possible outcome.   But what a contrast between Benghazi and Baghdad, and how two presidents dealt with a crisis at an embassy/consulate.

President Obama and Hillary Clinton allowed our diplomatic personnel in Benghazi to be brutally murdered.  And then they told us a convenient lie that some guy made an anti-Islamic video that caused the jihadists to go crazy.

President Trump, Vice President Pence and Secretary of State Pompeo responded forcefully to the Baghdad crisis.  They publicly identified the attackers as Iranian puppets.  They immediately sent reinforcements, and more troops are on the way.

Early yesterday, there were reports that the rioters were digging in for the long haul.  Tents, toilets and bedding were sent in.  It looked like they were preparing for an extended siege of the embassy.  Suddenly, there was a dramatic change -- the pro-Iranian militias began leaving.

I suspect we may learn someday that there were stern communications between the White House and the mullahs of Iran, and we saw the results.  Keep in mind, we are squeezing Iran hard.  The mullahs are in great danger.  There will be more Iranian outrages in the days ahead as they lash out, desperately trying to cling to power.

Here's one final thing that should make your blood boil.  The Marines guarding the U.S. Embassy and the rioters outside trying to get in are both being paid for by you, the American taxpayer.

The Marines are paid for by the Defense budget.  The rioters were paid for by the Obama Administration, which gave Iran billions of dollars in sanctions relief as part of the 2015 nuclear deal.  Tehran distributed this new found wealth to its terrorist proxies.
