Hope And Blessings

Christmas is a time of hope and blessings, a celebration of life and salvation. The Scriptures teach us that children are a blessing from God. It has also been said that the birth of each new child is a sign that God has not yet given up on this world.
That was never more true than the night two thousand years ago when the Son of Man was born in Bethlehem; born to bring the hope of salvation and the blessing of eternal life. No headline, no sorrow of life should turn our hearts from the love of God and the greatest gift ever given!
When the Christ Child came into the world, his cry pierced the night and split all of human history in half. No one can predict the headlines in the weeks and months ahead, but we can rest assured that one day every head will bow and every knee will bend before the King of Kings. The final victory has been won. All that is required of us is that we choose life.
While the focus of Christmas is, of course, Christ's birth in Bethlehem, each year I am reminded of Christmas' unique role in the birth of America. It was on Christmas night in 1776 that General George Washington crossed the Delaware River in a daring surprise attack on the Hessian mercenaries. Washington's victory at the Battle of Trenton was a turning point in the American Revolution. Surely God was there, and I believe that the God of Abraham is with us still!
My friends, I thank God for each and every one of you. Your prayers and encouragement sustain me as we continue to fight the good fight for faith, family and freedom.
Merry Christmas! And may you enjoy all of God's richest blessings in the year ahead.

It is with heavy hearts that we gather this holiday season as we remember those innocent lives lost in the tragedy that shook our nation in Newtown this month. Please join me in keeping the children and families affected in Newtown in our thoughts and prayers and may God bless you this holiday season.
As we come together with family and friends to celebrate the holiday season, I hope you will join me in counting the blessings we enjoy as Americans and as Virginians. It has been a great honor to serve the people of Virginia’s Fifth District, and I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent you in the United States Congress.
As 2012 comes to an end, so too does the 112th Congress. And as we begin a new year, we will surely face new challenges. Despite what comes our way, we must always come together to address the issues that we face knowing that it is our charge to leave this country better than we found it. We must also remember that it is our charge to preserve our American way of life that has been upheld for us throughout the generations.
We in the House of Representatives remain committed to continuing what we started in 2010 and working towards a better America that preserves our values of limited government, free enterprise, and individual liberty. I am proud to represent Virginia’s Fifth District, and I look forward to serving you for the next two years as we work toward our top priority of creating jobs for Fifth District Virginians and preserving this great nation – and its opportunities – for our children and grandchildren.
I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holidays – especially to our troops both at home and abroad who cannot be with their families as they sacrifice to protect the freedoms we hold so dear.

Family Research Council Responds to Attempts to Bar Voluntary Prayer at West Point
WASHINGTON, D.C. - An effort by an anti-religious organization to bar voluntary prayer at West Point indicates both the desperation of those who wish to scrub American public life of religion and their misunderstanding about the role of religion in our public institutions, according to the Family Research Council's Executive Vice President, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jerry Boykin.
Boykin, one of the original members of the U.S. Army's Delta Force, later commanded these elite warriors in combat operations. Later, he commanded all the Army's Green Berets as well as the Special Warfare Center and School and served as Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence.
"The heritage of Judeo-Christian faith in our military is as old as the American Revolution and as needed as up-to-date weaponry and training," Boykin said. "When America's future leaders voluntarily decide to honor their Creator through prayer, they are building into their lives the qualities of character and faith so vital not only to their future but the future of our country. Prayer at West Point is not mandatory, nor should it be, but exercising a tradition as old as the school should not be prohibited because of the objections of anti-Christian organizations like Americans United for the Separation of Church and State.
"Our national motto remains 'In God We Trust.' No one is required by law to accept the role of Christianity and Judaism in our nation's founding and ongoing national life, but all of us should have the decency to respect this free exercise of religion. For the great majority of our fellow citizens, public expressions of biblical faith are part of who they are as people and as Americans.
"This sad effort, should it succeed, would diminish both religious liberty and freedom of speech not only at the United States Military Academy but in all spheres of public life, from opening prayers at the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate to the courtroom of the Supreme Court that depicts the Ten Commandments on its wall.
"To stifle the open and voluntary expression of commonly-held religious conviction in order to placate a tiny minority that thrives on both the spotlight and insistence upon its own angry way would be a breach of our commitment to the liberty we are asking young West Pointers to uphold," Boykin concluded.

Throughout the presidential campaign, Barack Obama's cohorts in the liberal press made every effort to paint Mitt Romney as an out-of-touch silver-spoon Republican while going to great lengths to put a hedge of protection around their socialist icon in the White House.
No matter how unethical, dishonest, or unprofessional, the liberal media proved that they would do anything to help Obama get reelected:
- In the days following the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya, CBS News political director John Dickerson expressed dismay that Romney would dare speak out about the attack, yet declared that it is solely Romney's responsibility to hold the President to account over Libya "because the press isn't necessarily going to make that case for him."
- The media went into overdrive to spin and reframe Obama's politically damaging remark, "You didn't build that." It took NBC News 94 hours—almost 4 days—before they even reported it and ABC and CBS another 24 after that. Even then, they shamelessly defended the President and claimed that his remarks were taken out of context.
- The Obama cheerleaders at MSNBC took to distorting Romney's stump speech so that he would sound amazed at the existence of Wawas, gas stations, and touchtone ordering machines. In reality, Romney was remarking on the innovation of the private market. His message is clear as day to anyone who watches the full video of his stump speech, and it should sicken anyone who compares it to this sensational hatchet job.
Families at the Capitol
Last week, I joined a group of House Republican families outside the Capitol to talk about the fiscal cliff. The current federal debt means every man, woman, and child owes more than $50,000. Our children do not deserve to inherit a crushing debt from us. That's why we're fighting to balance the budget, lower taxes, and reduce spending.

Careening Toward The Cliff
Politico reports that Speaker Boehner convened a meeting of the GOP caucus last night and quoted the Serenity Prayer: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Unable to change the minds of House conservatives and sell a plan that was already dead on arrival in the Senate, Boehner issued the following statement:
With that news, the House adjourned for the Christmas holiday. The Senate is not scheduled to come back until Thursday, December 27th.

His nomination to the Supreme Court marked a historic change in the civility of the confirmation process. Despite facing unprecedented character assassination, he never back down from his convictions about constitutional meaning or the uniqueness of our Republic.
"Judge Bork demonstrated great respect for the text and history of the Constitution. He was a strong voice for the role of judges as constitutional interpreters rather than legislators. Family Research Council Statement on Defense Authorization Language
"We are happy to see that Congress has included language in the Department of Defense reauthorization bill that will protect the conscience rights of chaplains and service members. This language provides for the protection of the First Amendment rights of all our men and women in the Armed Forces.
"Unfortunately, the bill at the same time expands tax-payer funding for some abortions in the Armed Forces. This is a disappointing change from past Defense authorization bills."

The Huffington Post described Hagel as a "moderate Republican," who became a "fierce critic" of President Bush's war policies. Hagel opposed sending reinforcements to Iraq, and blasted the surge as "the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam." So on one of the most important military decisions in recent memory, Hagel was dead wrong.
During his time in the Senate, Chuck Hagel was soft on Iran and hostile to Israel. In 2001, Hagel was just one of two senators to oppose sanctions against Iran. In 2007, he opposed legislation labeling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist front. In 2009, he urged President Obama to begin direct talks with Hamas, another terrorist group. Our friends at The Weekly Standard have posted a fact sheet on Hagel's record.
Hagel briefly flirted with the idea of running for president in 2008. At the time, I led a coalition of conservative leaders that interviewed potential presidential contenders. What stood out most was that Hagel's entire presentation to our group was an attack on Israel and a call to reorient our foreign policy toward the Muslim world.
Throughout his time in the Senate, Hagel consistently opposed the idea of striking Iran's nuclear weapons facilities. There is nothing to suggest that he has changed his mind since he left the Senate in 2008. In fact, he currently serves on the board of a bank that is being investigated for violating trade sanctions imposed on Iran.
Yet with each passing day, it becomes increasingly likely that the United States and Israel will have to confront Iran's nuclear ambitions or be confronted by a nuclear-armed Iran. That Hagel is under consideration to be the next Secretary of Defense strongly signals that the administration will likely continue its outreach to the tyrants in Tehran.

Newtown Is In Our Thoughts And Prayers
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those in Newton, Connecticut, especially the victims and their families, and all who are affected by the horrible and senseless tragedy that took place last Friday.
Higher Taxes And Fewer Jobs
Dear Friend,
Over the past two years, Central and Southside Virginians have witnessed the negative impacts on their families and small businesses as provisions in the President's health care law continue to take effect. This law increases costs, limits access to care, and levies additional tax burdens on the American people at a time when we can least afford it.
One of these taxes set to take effect on January 1st is the medical device tax. Totaling nearly $30 billion, this tax is estimated to result in 43,000 American jobs across the country threatened, including many in Virginia.
At a time when we as a nation have faced unacceptably high, long-term unemployment, the last thing that we should do is add additional burdens that make it harder for our small businesses to hire and grow. Instead we must advance policies that keep taxes low and rein in wasteful federal spending in order to create the economic certainty that is needed to get our economy back on track.
Over the course of the past two years, the House has taken the lead on putting an end to big spending, big government policies that slow economic growth. We in the House of Representatives believe that keeping taxes low on all Americans is essential to getting 5th District Virginians and all Americans back to work.
This summer, we adopted legislation to put an end to the medical device tax hike that is now set to take place in less than one month. This legislation will enhance the quality of care while reducing the cost; and it will preserve American jobs that we cannot afford to lose in these trying times.
The Senate has not taken action on this legislation to date, but there is still time. On January 1st, the medical device tax, coupled with the tax hike on all Americans that is currently also set to take effect, would harm our local communities across the Commonwealth and the country. It is my hope that our colleagues in the Senate will recognize the impact these tax hikes have on the American people and join with us in stopping them in order to get our economy back on track and create the jobs that the people of the 5th District and those across this country need.

In response to the Connecticut carnage there was no shortage of "solutions" suggested this weekend. Gun control. Regulating death-oriented video games that the shooter reportedly spent hours each day immersed in. Mental health reform. Armed guards in every school. Some of these solutions make sense and others don't. All of them miss the real point.
What is happening in our society that spawns these young, twisted men who can kill the innocent so easily? First and foremost, as a nation, we are running from G-d. Our Founders put Him in the most important statement of the American founding in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Few of our children know those words. But they have been taught that our Constitution has enshrined in it a right to destroy inconvenient life.
The Founders believed liberty came directly from G-d. With their knowledge of Scripture, they knew each child was made in the image of G-d. That is why everyone had dignity, value and worth.
Today's children are taught by our culture that we are a cosmic accident. Something slithered out of the primal slime and over billions of years evolved into a human being. We are cousins, ten times removed, to the ape at the zoo eating his own excrement.
G-d is pushed out of every public place. The number of Americans professing they are atheists, agnostics or faithless grows yearly and is reported breathlessly by happy social scientists and reporters as evidence that we are putting away the old superstitions.
In early America, most believed their evil acts would have to be accounted for in front of a G-d of Judgment. Today increasing numbers of the young believe there is no throne, no G-d, no cross.
When a young man massacres innocents, we have been trained to believe that the act was due to improper levels of chemical enzymes and misfiring synapses. As we learn more about our cells, we forget more about our souls.
Were Hitler and the countless Germans who cooperated in the killing of six million Jews, and who made lamp shades out of their skin, simply the products of an inadequate German mental health system? Or should we revisit the existence of evil?
Having robbed children of any sense that their Father is in Heaven and that they are His creation, we then launched an experiment in raising them without earthly fathers too. Having neither a Father in heaven or a father in the home, young men define their manhood by spreading their seed in random couplings. Young women, searching for the love our hearts yearn for, make themselves available.
They try to fill the emptiness of their lives with a snort of cocaine or needle filled with heroin. Overstretched police departments can't keep up with the wreckage. Kabul is safer than a warm night in Chicago.
Virtually every one of these markers of moral decline is off limits for the national conversation that we are being told we must have in the wake of the Newtown shootings. And being off limits, we are condemned to seeing more horror, more death, more broken families, more demonic acts of evil.
The sphere of safety will shrink. The unthinkable will become reality. If, as our Founding believed, only a virtuous people can be free, our tombstone will remind us that the wages of sin is death.
Connecticut's state motto is a Latin phrase, "Qui Transtulit Sustinet," meaning, "He who transplanted still sustains." The founders of the state meant G-d. He had transplanted them to the new land. He would sustain them in their time of troubles. He will sustain us still today, but only if we rededicate ourselves to becoming One Nation Under G-d.
