Robert Hurt
Over the past four years, the people of Virginia’s 5th District have
suffered as a result of failed policies that have created uncertainty for
families, small business owners, and farmers alike. Whether it is the threat of
costly regulations, higher taxes, the government takeover of healthcare, or the
trillion dollar stimulus, these harmful policies have left us with a larger
federal government that is crushing the American people.
This over-reaching federal government, which negatively impacts our local
communities and harms our families, small businesses, and farmers, comes with
great costs. Not only has an over-reaching government cost our country millions
of jobs, but it is also costing us trillions of dollars.
Just this past week, we have learned that for the fourth consecutive year,
Americans across this country will suffer from another year of trillion dollar
deficits; for the fourth straight year, the federal government will spend over
a trillion dollars more than it has taken in.
At a time when many in the 5th District are suffering through
double-digit unemployment in this sluggish economy, this reckless spending
spree must come to an end. Recognizing this, the House of Representatives has
been focused on adopting policies that will restore economic prosperity by
reducing our unsustainable debt and deficits.
The House of Representatives has worked tirelessly to end business as usual in
Washington. We have voted to cut trillions of dollars in wasteful government
spending, repealed the $1 trillion health care law, and adopted legislation
that would fundamentally reform the federal budgeting process which contributes
to our nation’s spending problem.
But perhaps the most important thing the House of Representatives has done is
adopted a budget. For three years now, the Senate has said it will not offer a
budget plan to the American people. And though the President offered a budget,
it was rejected with unanimous bipartisan opposition, receiving a total of zero
votes in the House and the Senate. The House budget is the only plan offered
that will address our nation’s spending problem and move us from a wasteful
Washington spending culture to sound fiscal footing.
Unfortunately, our budget, along with the dozens of other proposals to put an
end to Washington’s reckless spending spree, continue to await action in the
United States Senate. Regardless of the Senate’s unwillingness to act, the
House of Representatives continues to press forward on behalf of the American
people.
For the sake of the future of this nation and for the future of our children
and grandchildren, we must put an end to business as usual and we must put this
country back on the path to fiscal sustainability. Now more than ever we need
real leadership in the Senate and the White House and it is my hope that they
will wait no longer to work with the House and address this spending crisis to
restore America’s greatness and preserve this great nation and its opportunity
for future generations.
