Beijing's Espionage

Wednesday, November 20, 2019

By Gary Bauer

Several weeks ago, I told you about reports that the Trump Administration was taking steps to stop China's efforts to recruit scientists in the United States for its espionage efforts.  A Senate report released this week reveals just how extensive Beijing's efforts were.

The Chinese "Thousand Talents" program began in 2008.  It recruited at least 2,600 scientists in the United States, most of them Chinese nationals, at government labs or federal funded university research facilities.

While these scientists were being paid by the U.S. government to conduct research on a wide range of issues, they were also being paid by the Chinese Communist Party to make sure their research found its way back to China.

Incredibly, the FBI did not begin aggressively confronting the Chinese espionage until 2018!  Presumably, James Comey, Andrew McCabe and Peter Strzok were just too busy sniffing out Russians in the Trump campaign to notice all the Chinese spies crawling around our college campuses and government labs.

But I do remember being surprised when Comey's successor, FBI Director Christopher Wray, told the Senate Intelligence Committee at the beginning of this year:

"[T]he Chinese counterintelligence threat is more deep, more diverse, more vexing, more challenging, more comprehensive and more concerning than any counterintelligence threat I can think of."

While the left and the media are focused on Russia and Ukraine, the Chinese are robbing us blind.

UVA CRs Updates, Upcoming Events

Good evening,

As the Hoos get ready to head home for a much deserved break for Thanksgiving, we have one more exciting event planned and several updates.

Updates

CRs Host Trump Victory Rep/Debate Night

On Thursday, we hosted Dawson Buchanan, the 5th congressional district's representative for Trump Victory. Dawson described what it's going to take to flip VA red in 2020 and how our organization can help out. We're looking forward to campaigning to re-elect President Trump in 2020!

Also, as mentioned in the last email, we decided to host a debate last week instead of a speaker. Random topics that evenly divide the Republican Party were chosen, debated, and the team that made the most convincing arguments was declared the winner. Our members enjoyed it so much that when our reservation for the room expired, we moved to another one to continue debating well past our usual ending time! Discussing issues with fellow conservatives is definitely the best way to solidify our views - and it's pretty fun too!

Rake-a-Thon

On Saturday, about a dozen of our members braved the cold weather to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity's annual Rake-a-Thon event. As mentioned in the previous email, we intend to place a good amount of emphasis on volunteering now that election season has passed. Our volunteers certainly exemplified that goal on Saturday!

Upcoming

CRs and TPUSA Co-Host Jaco Booyens

We are very excited to have Jaco Booyens come speak with us this Thursday. Jaco, the sibling of a sex trafficking survivor, was inspired to devote his life's work to bringing attention to the issue and helping other victims.

One such effort was his role in directing and producing the film 8 DAYS, a movie devoted to bringing awareness to sex trafficking in the United States. Jaco also works on a number of other projects with the central goal of empowering women. The event will be in Monroe Hall, room 122 and while it won't start until 7PM, those interested are encouraged to get there around 6:30PM to guarantee you get a seat. Please take a moment to sign up here to get a ~free~ ticket to the event. Hope to see you there!

That's all we have for you now. Thank you for your continued support of UVA CRs.

UVA CRs Updates, Upcoming Events

Good afternoon,

With election season over, the Hoos have been hard at work transitioning to our post-election activities. Here are your weekly updates and upcoming events:

Updates:

Volunteering at Animal Shelter

On Sunday, several of our members volunteered at the Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA, helping to fill up bags for the food pantry and running the lobby.

With the election over, we plan on pursuing a number of volunteer activities. After all, we constantly champion charity as an alternative to government intervention, so we're putting our money where our mouths are!

Statement on UVA's Removal of the 21-Gun Salute from Annual Veterans Day Events

The current administration at UVA made the decision to discontinue the 21-gun salute that has been part of UVA's annual Veterans Day events for decades, expressing concerns that it would "cause a panic." Needless to say, we were not pleased. You can read our response below:

Upcoming Events

Debate Night

In place of our regular weekly meeting, we're going to host a debate this Thursday in which our members will be placed in teams to debate issues that the Republican Party is split on (such as foreign policy initiatives, trade policy, etc.). As usual, all of you are invited to attend and can help us pick the winners! The meeting will be in Monroe Hall, room 122 at 7PM on Thursday.

Rake-a-Thon

Finally, in the spirit of volunteering, a number of our members will be participating in this Saturday's annual Rake-a-Thon event in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

That's all we have for you now. Thank you for your continued support of UVA CRs.

Family Research Council Applauds Trump administration for Protecting Faith-Based Adoption Providers

November 1, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Family Research Council applauds the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for announcing a proposed regulatory change to ensure that the government may not punish adoption providers who operate according to their faith, including their belief that children do best in a home with a mom and dad, which empirical evidence supports.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins stated:

"This is tremendous news for children, birth moms, and adoptive families, who want the opportunity to work with an agency that shares their values and core beliefs --- without fear of government discrimination.

"Thanks to President Trump, charities will be free to care for needy children and operate according to their religious beliefs and the reality that children do best in a home with a married mom and dad. Under the proposed HHS rule, faith-based adoption providers will no longer have to choose between abandoning their faith or abandoning homeless children because the government disapproves of their views on marriage.

"The need for this action is unfortunately evident as various state and local governments have trampled upon religious freedom protections and the First Amendment, forcing the shut-down of faith-based adoption providers that decline to leave their faith at the door. Punishing adoption providers for their convictions only serves to hurt the vulnerable children who miss out on the opportunity to find a loving home with a mom and dad.

"Faith-based adoption services are motivated by their faith to perform a public service, one that is woefully undersupplied. Discriminating against them for the very reason that motivates them to perform this irreplaceable service is the height of folly. Overextended, financially-strapped social service government agencies are unable to fill the void left by shuttered faith-based charities.

"We commend President Trump for his courage to stand up for vulnerable children, adoptive families, and those who serve them. This is a president who acknowledges that faith in God is central to the mission of faith-based adoption providers and the well-being of communities," concluded Perkins.
