It's Not Safer in Virginia
Abortion Doc’s License Suspended
They are not “clinics” as we commonly call them. Clinics are places you go to get well. They are abortion centers. You do not get well at a Planned Parenthood center. In fact, your health may be in danger as there are no regulations to ensure your safety in Virginia. Recent news out of New Jersey and Maryland confirms this fact.
On Wednesday, New Jersey suspended Dr. Steven Brigham’s medical license. Dr. Brigham is an abortionist who owns American Women’s Services Inc., headquartered in New Jersey, but operating abortion centers out of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Dr. Brigham’s manipulation of the system recently came to light (resulting in the suspension of his license) when the uterus and small intestine of one of his clients ruptured during an abortion. This is not the first time Dr. Brigham’s license has been suspended or revoked. Dr. Brigham has been cited in two New York botched abortions (resulting in the revocation of his New York license) and has shady standing in various other states.
It was Dr. Brigham’s routine to begin third trimester abortions in New Jersey (where third trimester abortions must be done in a hospital) and then caravan with his clients to Maryland (where they can be done in “clinics”) where he finished the procedure. In New Jersey, Dr. Brigham had no hospital admitting privileges, no OB/GYN training, and no medical permission to perform third trimester abortions (hence the pilgrimage to Maryland).
However, Dr. Brigham was barred from practicing medicine in Maryland as result of another mishap from the mid-90s. This did not stop Dr. Brigham; he simply listed George Shepard Jr., an 88-year-old disabled physician, as the physician of record to cover for his proceedings in Maryland (this is a felony under Maryland law!). Dr. Brigham rationalized his actions stating that he believed this to be acceptable since George Shepard Jr. was in the office at the time of the abortions. However, George Shepard Jr. suffered a stroke a while ago, disabling his arm and rendering him incapable of assisting in cases of emergency during Dr. Brigham’s risky third trimester abortions. Medically responsible? I’d say no.
According to records, Dr. Brigham’s clients were not even aware they’d be traveling to Maryland for the completion of their abortion. The abortion industry has proven to be quite profitable for those, like Dr. Brigham, who routinely perform abortions, which is likely the explanation for his “creativity.”
Is Dr. Brigham the only disreputable abortionist operating in Virginia and neighboring states? It’s hard to tell. However, since abortion center reporting and inspections are not required in Virginia, it’s virtually impossible to know for sure.
If Dr. Brigham had caravanned to Virginia instead of Maryland on this particular occasion, the chances that his client’s complications would have been linked to a botched abortion at the hands of Dr. Brigham are slim to none. Additionally, no emergency equipment (defibrillator, hemorrhage equipment, etc.) is currently required at Virginia abortion centers and therefore a Virginia facility may not have had the ability to even save this client’s life.
The health and safety of women demands the arraignment of doctors like Steven Brigham. Virginians must demand a higher level of professionalism and medical aptitude from its abortion providers and facilities. To address this critical issue, The Family Foundation has been and will continue to advocate for increased safety and regulation of abortion centers in Virginia in future General Assembly sessions.

LameStream Media Puts Politics Above Patients
This raises the questionable practice of asking vulnerable, newly-injured people to expose themselves to a dangerous experiment. Are the patients told that many show some spontaneous improvement in the first few months? The only real certainty in this human experiment is that Geron's stock price has shot up.
The other certain fact is that Adult Stem Cells have already helped spinal cord injury patients, even up to 15 years after injury. The documented science was presented recently to the U.S. Senate. Rather than risking lives with ethically-problematic experiments, why are the media ignoring real success? Why not put the patients first? Patients like Laura Dominguez have already experienced the life-changing benefits of adult stem cells.

Virginia AG Ken Cuccinelli on the First Virginia Tea Party Patriot's Convetion
I'm told that ticket sales topped 2800 - which is incredible - with the folks that came with sponsors, I'm sure they cleared 3,000 paid-for participants. The efforts of the volunteer run organization - the Virginia Federation of Tea Party Patriots - were outstanding. Wow.
Here are some of my brief thoughts on the Virginia Tea Party Patriots' convention this weekend. In fact, I'll make them so brief, I'll do them in bullet format:
-Any politician who doesn't take this movement seriously after the kind of organized demonstration of political power this weekend, ignores it at their own peril. This includes incumbents of both parties and would-be challengers.
-For every activist that showed up this weekend, there are 10 more out there... and that's just the activists!
-These folks are willing to learn, both tactics and philosophical details, and they are willing to work (and some of them will run for office themselves). A critical question will be: "for how long? Through 2010? 2011? 2012? Or longer?"
-The willingness to learn is going to make these folks more and more politically effective. One note, their legislative priority during the 2010 Va. General Assembly session was the Va. Healthcare Freedom Act, and look how that turned out!
-Unlike in some other states (e.g., Nevada, Delaware, Alaska), so far, Virginia Tea Party activists have not worked through how to unify behind a single candidate in a race, but I think 2010 will have taught them that lesson - and the price of not learning it. The convention this weekend could be a major element in overcoming this organizational challenge... time will tell. Btw, this is probably one of the toughest organizational challenges for a movement with no formal organization. Solving this problem is (normally) one of the things that a party structure does for you.
-One question is what role these folks will play in state legislative races in Virginia in 2011. Many of them were critical to our grassroots efforts in 2009 in my campaign for AG, but will they continue to work their way down the political ladder? I hope so, as the potential to have a decisive impact is even greater in smaller races (a state senate seat has less than 1/3 the voters as a congressional seat, and a smaller proportion of voters will show up, so you can win a pure grassroots campaign despite enormous spending disadvantages). 2011 will also present some planning challenges (for everyone) because of redistricting.
By working together and focusing their efforts - the tea party has the potential to continue to make a lasting mark on many election cycles down the road.
For those of you who consider yourself tea partiers - keep it up! For those of you who don't - check it out!

Quote of the Day
"In nearly half a century, the left has done nothing for black America. Leftists have ruined the cities they govern and most of the public schools they control. But they have mastered one thing -- the ability to paint their opponents as racist opponents of blacks. So, blacks, many of whom have conservative values -- from opposing same-sex marriage to supporting school vouchers -- vote almost universally for the left.
The same holds true of most American Jews. Most live profoundly conservative lives but vote left. Why?"

Getting Out the Conservative Women's Vote
LIBERAL WOMEN'S GROUP DEMEANS WOMEN
Conservative leaders defend the kitchen and home and the millions of women voting their values in November
Los Angeles, CA-In a speech to the Democratic Women's Club this afternoon, Stephanie Schriock, president of the liberal fundraising group Emily's List, plans to criticize the G.O.P. as the party that wants to keep women in the kitchen.
In a joint response, The Kitchen Cabinet (TKC) President Sonja Eddings Brown along with TKC leadership team members Sue Lynch, president of the National Federation of Republican Women, and American Conservative Union's Lynn Bradshaw issued the followoing statement:
"What's wrong with being in the kitchen? Why does the president of Emily's List, the fundraising nerve center for liberal women in America, belittle women who start their day in the kitchen--mothers and others who make a hot breakfast before they head off to school, or to operating rooms, their Wall Street offices or even their Senate caucuses? Is she kidding?"The change we are all looking for in the country is coming from women who love their families, love their homes, and love their work. Women who pour into the streets and lead patriotic Tea Parties. Women who are linking arms and forming a line to change the nation by exercising our sacred right to vote."
In 2008, 38 million American women were registered to vote but sat out the election. The Kitchen Cabinet is organizing conservative women, their organizations and their leaders to unite in inundating the polls with votes in a year when women are expected to outvote men 52% - 48%.
This weekend, The Kitchen Cabinet is leading get-out-the-vote initiatives on the ground in Ohio and Nevada with a focus on other battleground states over the next three weekends.
