The event drew 150 people, including his wife Suzanne, daughter Tucker, mother Helen, sister Kate, Congressman Scott Rigell, Congressman Randy Forbes, Delegate Chris Stolle, Virginia Beach City Councilman and candidate for Delegate Glenn Davis and Chesapeake Mayor Alan Krasnoff. Women Sick of Stupid Lies Demand McAuliffe Stop Political Gender-Baiting

 

New on-line resource will equip women with information

they need to discern the facts instead of stupid political spin

 

 

RICHMOND - A diverse group of women from across the Commonwealth has rolled out a new website to help busy women find more substantive information than they're being fed in the current shallow and negative political climate.  The site will provide Virginians with official government documents and evidence that definitively rebut some of the political mendacities that are widely circulating.

 

The new WomenSickofStupidLies.com website sets the record straight on the gender-baiting that some candidates are using as a political tactic to mislead voters.  This tactic works much like race-baiting did.  But it uses focus-grouped phrases and code words to frighten women and ridicule political opponents to scare women into voting for the gender-baiters.  It also counts on many voters not having enough time to dig through all of the trash-talking to discern fact from fiction.  

 

 "We represent a growing movement of Virginia women—thousands of Virginia women—who are disgusted with the gender-baiting that has become a favorite tactic of some political candidates," said Melody Himel Scalley from Tidewater.  "This gender-baiting is filled with lies.  In fact, they are stupid lies.  But we are not as stupid as the gender-baiters think we are.  We're here to provide women with the FACTS instead of that robotic political sales pitch."

One fallacy has been relayed by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe:  that exempting current facilities from Virginia's new health and safety standards is somehow good for women.  Only because of the new standards, state health inspectors were able to conduct inspections of these facilities for the first time in decades, and they found literally hundreds of deficiencies, such as expired medications, extremely poor infection prevention protocols, dirty and unsanitary conditions, absence of criminal background checks for staff who handled controlled substances, and other substandard care.  Many women have never heard of these facts because they were not widely reported.  State documents with the health inspections of abortion facilities throughout Virginia have been uploaded to the new website so that all women can see the hundreds of deficiencies for themselves, as well as the tragic problems that some of the abortion doctors have had in their practice of medicine.

And in an effort to educate McAuliffe about these facts, the women today e-mailed some of the documents and the website link to him so that he can be better informed.    

"Young women especially need Virginia's health and safety standards because they don't know that they should expect the highest standard of clinical care," said Tricia Powell of Fredericksburg, who had an abortion at the age of 17.  "Most teenagers would not demand that doctors wash hands between patients, that facilities not dispense expired drugs, that the procedure tables should be sterilized between patients, and that the conditions and instruments should be sanitary.  Whether women are pro-choice or pro-life, a mother, daughter, or sister, they deserve better than the poor, unsanitary, substandard care that existed at these facilities prior to the standards."

The inspection documents also reveal that despite Virginia's law requiring parental consent before a minor's abortion, the staff in one facility failed to ensure informed written consent was obtained from the minor's parent or guardian for three minor teenagers.  "If it had not been for the standards and health inspections, we would never have known of this serious violation of Virginia law," said Terry Beatley, also of Fredericksburg.  "Who knows how many times the law was violated in the past BEFORE the standards were enacted?   Women need to understand that if any candidate or politician says he will exempt abortion facilities from these standards, he is not protecting women—but just the opposite." 

WomenSickofStupidLies.com also addresses other aspects of gender-baiting, including the attempt to divert women so that they will focus only on a few so-called "women's" issues.  For example, the site shows U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data revealing that the unemployment rate for women is much higher now than it was earlier this century.  "As a woman, I find it incredibly offensive to be reduced to one body part as the gender-baiters try to do," said Heather Cordasco of Williamsburg.  "Every woman I know is juggling a lot of roles and responsibilities.  The women I know are complex and complicated people who work very hard every day and take care of their loved ones.  We are worried about keeping our jobs and paying our bills.  These gender-baiting candidates, such as McAuliffe, are demeaning to women."

"The alleged 'war on women' isn't actually a battle for control over women's reproductive systems or a scheme for our social subjugation," said Rita Dunaway of Harrisonburg.  "It is a war of propaganda.  It is a plot to keep us so saturated with fear and so narrowly focused on our own personal stake in these particular issues that we lose our capacity to thoughtfully evaluate public policy from a broader perspective.  We urge Virginia women to see through the stupid lies and read the facts for themselves."

Obamacare's defenders, from the president down, initially attempted to defend the Healthcare.gov's terrible performance by claiming it was overwhelmed by customer demand. So people began asking the obvious question: How many Americans signed up for Obamacare?

It should have been an easy question to answer. But the number of actual Obamacare enrollees has been treated like a state secret. During their congressional testimony this week, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Marilyn Tavenner, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, repeatedly refused to say how many people had actually signed up for Obamacare. Now we know why.

According to CBS News only six people signed up for Obamacare in the first 24 hours. As CBS notes, "The health care exchanges need to average 39,000 enrollees a day to meet the goal of seven million by March 1."


The Obamacare Entitlement

A front-page story in today's Washington Post confirms another major problem with Obamacare. It is massively expanding the Medicaid entitlement, which will cost taxpayers additional billions. The Post reports:

"The first month of the new health law's rollout reveals an unexpected pattern in several states: a crush of people applying for an expansion of Medicaid and a trickle of sign-ups for private insurance. This early imbalance -- in some places, nine out of 10 enrollees are in Medicaid -- has taken some experts by surprise. …

"'When we first saw the numbers, everyone's eyes kind of bugged out,' said Matt Salo, who runs the National Association of Medicaid Directors. 'Of the people walking through the door, 90 percent are on Medicaid. We're thinking, what planet is this happening on?'"

I'll tell you what planet you're on, Mr. Salo: You are on Planet Obama. A place where billions of dollars are taken from the middle class, redistributed to others in "free" health care and then bureaucrats like you express shock.

Meanwhile, the other big story in Washington is the ongoing stalemate over the budget. Virtually everyone, including Obama, concedes the need to control entitlement spending. But thanks to Obamacare, Medicaid, already a $250 billion-plus program, is growing explosively.

We already went through one government shutdown due to Obama's refusal to consider any changes to his signature initiative. I am not optimistic that he will include Obamacare in any grand bargain on entitlement spending.


Obamacare Cronyism

If you're not sick of Obamacare yet, this next story may cause you to lose your lunch.

Quality Software Services, Inc., was one of the companies hired to help build the Obamacare website, Healthcare.gov. QSSI is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest health insurance companies the country. QSSI received $150 million for its work on Healthcare.gov.

Surprise! One of the top officers of UnitedHealth Group, Anthony Welters, was also a top fundraiser for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Welters and his wife, Beatrice, raised between $200,000 and $500,000 for Obama's 2008 campaign.

As you know, Healthcare.gov has some problems. Obama has promised that a surge of tech experts are being called in to fix the "glitches." Now get this: the New York Post reports that QSSI has been called in to help fix Healthcare.gov.

Yes, you read that right -- a tech company connected to a top campaign donor is getting paid to fix a mess it helped to create!

By the way, thanks to Obamacare your tax dollars are also subsidizing sex workers in San Francisco!


Good News!

Almost every day I get messages from frustrated conservatives asking why more isn't being done to fight Obamacare in the courts. There are several cases moving their way through the legal system. That system, which the Founders gave us, works slowly by design.

While the Supreme Court declined to strike down Obamacare, several lower federal courts have ruled in favor of religious liberty and in favor of Christian business owners who say abortion mandates violate the deeply held teachings of their faith.

Today, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals struck a blow against Obamacare's mandates that offend moral values. Francis and Philip Gilardi, owners of a food-supply company, objected to Obamacare's mandate that they must pay for contraception and abortion-inducing drugs in their health insurance policies.

Writing for the majority, Judge Janice Rogers Brown declared: "They can either abide by the sacred tenets of their faith, pay a penalty of over $14 million, and cripple the companies they have spent a lifetime building, or they become complicit in a grave moral wrong."

Making a grave moral wrong part of the cost of doing business should be unacceptable in America. But its par for the course in the left's bizarro world.

By the way, there is a huge battle going on in the Senate right now over control of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, widely considered as the second most important court in the country. Yesterday, Senate conservatives blocked a liberal Obama appointee to the D.C. court. You may recall that Janice Rogers Brown was a Bush appointee stalled by Senate liberals for nearly two years.

Appeals Ruling Against HHS Mandate a Partial Win for Religious Freedom, Time for Congress to Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today the D.C. Circuit Court ruled in favor of the Gilardi brothers who own Freshway Foods and Freshway Logistics, an Ohio-based company, in its lawsuit against the Obama administration's abortifacient and contraceptive mandate. Unfortunately, they did not overturn the lower court ruling against the company itself.

Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins made the following comments in response to the ruling in Gilardi vs. HHS:

"We are very pleased that the court ruled that the Religious Freedom Protection Act protects the Gilardi brothers from being forced to violate their religious beliefs as demanded by President Obama's HHS mandate. However, we disagree with the ruling that Freshway Foods is not equally impacted by this mandate that is hostile to religious freedom.

"Family-owned businesses across the country face thousands of dollars in fines - or even millions in some cases - if they ignore the president's decree. For the first time in history, the government would become a vehicle for punishing business owners who simply seek to live their lives in the marketplace according to the fundamental teachings of their Christian faith.

"Unfortunately, the Obama administration has either an extremely narrow view of the First Amendment or an outright hostility toward those of orthodox faith who simply want to fully live out their faith. In either case the Obama administration fails to see how their mandate impacts everyday life for millions of Americans.

"Since HHS and the Obama administration are unwilling to protect religious liberty despite numerous court decisions against their violations, this underscores once again that Congress must act to preserve the constitutional right of religious freedom. Until that happens, institutions and businesses will be forced to choose between massive fines or violating their deeply-held religious beliefs. This unprecedented trampling of religious freedom must be put to an end," concluded Perkins.

Obama Lied, People Cried

For weeks the media ignored the victims of Obamacare while continuing to spotlight victims of the government shutdown. It took them a while, but now reporters have finally realized there is a huge story to cover here.

Yesterday, Lisa Myers of NBC News reported the following: "Buried in Obamacare regulations from July 2010 is an estimate that because of normal turnover in the individual insurance market, '40 to 67 percent' of customers will not be able to keep their policy."  

Translation: The Obama Administration knew in July 2010 that millions of Americans would lose the insurance and doctors they currently have. Yet Obama repeatedly promised the exact opposite.

In June of 2009, Obama said, "We will keep this promise to the American people. If you like your doctor you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your healthcare plan, you will be able to keep your healthcare plan. Period." Watch him here.

Terri Flay of Manassas, Virginia, who is losing her current health insurance policy, said, "I keep playing that over and over in my head: that you can keep your health plan, period. But it isn't 'period.' They put a gun to my head saying that I have to pay more…"

Any moment now I expect White House Press Secretary Jay Carney to say that Obama had no idea the regulations were causing millions of people to lose healthcare plans they liked. If he tries that, it would only add insult to injury. No cabinet secretary would let a president misstate facts to the American people over and over again. Her job would be on the line, and rightly so.

The truth is clear. Despite Obama's repeated promises, millions of Americans are learning that they cannot keep their current insurance plans.


The Left's Real Goal

Many conservatives have argued that Obamacare is intended to hasten the slide into a full-fledged, government-run socialist healthcare system known as the single-payer system. I agree.

But here's something that many people still haven't grasped: The millions of Americans who are losing their current policies are offset by millions of previously uninsured Americans, who are essentially getting "free" insurance through the massive expansion of Medicaid or with help from generous taxpayer subsidies.

In other words, Obamacare is another massive redistribution of wealth scheme. You don't need to take my word for it. In March 2010, the New York Times described Obamacare as "the federal government's biggest attack on economic inequality" in decades.

It belongs in the list of programs you already know about: The explosion of food stamps; Obamaphones, which you are paying for in your current cell phone bills; the abuse of the disability program; gutting welfare reform's work requirement.

Obamacare was largely paid for by massive new taxes on working Americans such as the individual mandate. There is a new surtax on capital gains and dividends. There are new taxes on medical devices. There are taxes on tanning beds and even some health insurance policies. All of these taxes take money from hard-working Americans and redistribute it to those the left favors.

In 2008, long before CBS discovered Benghazi or NBC discovered Obamacare's flaws, Joe the Plumber asked a simple question about Obama's economic agenda and Obama answered, "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."

Rep. Robert Hurt Statement on Financial Services Committee Hearing on FHA’s Taxpayer Bailout

 

Washington, DC – Congressman Robert Hurt (R-Virginia) released the following statement after a hearing held by the Financial Services Committee to focus on the $1.7 billion taxpayer-funded bailout of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA):

"Today's hearing marks the seventh this year on the topic of the FHA and its worsening financial stability.  Over the course of the past year, we have heard witnesses testify that FHA has disregarded warnings that its fiscal stability was waning due to poor choices regarding insurance pricing. Today's hearing, which focused on its recently announced $1.7 billion bailout, was further proof of the FHA's failed housing policies. 

"Hardworking American taxpayers should not be stuck with a $1.7 billion bill to bailout the FHA, nor should they be expected to foot the $200 billion bill to bailout Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  We need a sustainable housing finance system that benefits both homeowners and taxpayers.  That is why my colleagues in the House and I introduced the Protecting American Taxpayers and Homeowners (PATH) Act, which has been adopted by the Financial Services Committee.  This bill would restore FHA's fiscal stability and focus its mission on helping first-time homebuyers and low-to-moderate income buyers, end the bailouts of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and get private capital invested in our housing finance system again. 

"Today's hearing brought us one step closer to FHA reform.  I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues to move the PATH Act forward and put in place policies that will benefit American taxpayers and homeowners."

Giving Law Enforcement Tools to Prosecute Gang Violence

Early in Obenshain's Senate career, he partnered with Commonwealth's Attorneys to expand multijurisdiction grand juries to cover gang violence.

In 2013, Mark Obenshain sponsored legislation that passed unanimously in both chambers to expand the scope of multijursidiction grand juries to cover a broad range of violent crimes.

Protecting Families from Abusive Spouses

In 2007, Mark Obenshain sponsored Senate Bill 1237, which instituted mandatory jail time for repeat violators of protective orders. 

In 2008, he sponsored Senate Bill 540, which ensured swift entering and transfer of protective orders to the Virginia Criminal Information Network system. 

In 2011, Mark Obenshain sponsored legislation to expand the Address Confidentiality Program for victims of domestic violence to all jurisdictions within the Commonwealth. 

Mandatory Life Sentences for Child Predators

In 2012, he sponsored Senate Bill 436, which imposed a mandatory life sentence to those who would rape young children. 

Pushing for Laws to Combat Human Trafficking and Abuse

Earlier this year, Obenshain partnered with Del. David Bulova (D-Fairfax) to introduce legislation requiring posters advertising the Human Trafficking Hotline number to be posted at truck stops.

In August, Mark Obenshain announced measures to combat human trafficking in Virginia, including making human trafficking a stand-alone felony offense, ensuring victim compensation and adding those engaging in commercial sex with a minor to the sex offender registry. 

The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star wrote in a recent editorial, "Attorney General candidate Mark Obenshain (R) proposes making human trafficking a standalone felony. It should be. He also would like to see forfeiture laws extended to such exploitation, as well as a Human Trafficking Task Force established to work with prosecutors, publish educational materials, and so on. The General Assembly should take note of these ideas. Virginia has come far in fighting human trafficking, but the goose isn't cooked yet."
