September 16, 2017

PHILADELPHIA - Delegates to the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) 39th Biennial Convention elected Jody Rushton of Plano, Texas, to serve as president for 2018-2019, during its convention held Sept. 14-17 in Philadelphia.

Rushton has been a respected force in Republican circles for three decades, dating back to her position as western states coordinator for the Reagan-Bush campaign in 1984. She succeeds NFRW President Carrie Almond of Chillicothe, Mo., who served as NFRW president during the 2016-2017 biennium.

The Republican Party of Texas recently awarded Rushton the first Susan B. Anthony Leadership Award for her work building Rising Stars among Texas Republican women throughout the state. Rushton also was awarded the Collin County Republican Party's John McVeigh Award in 2015 for outstanding service and dedication to the Republican Party. The McAllen, Texas, native has served as president of Conner Harrington Republican Women's Club and president of the Texas Federation of Republican Women.

The newly-elected Executive Committee of the National Federation of Republican Women is excited to build on the organization's foundation of leadership over the next two years, Rushton said. "We are grateful and humbled to reach out to women all around this great country," she continued. "We are proud of our past, and committed to our future. We are united in our goals and stronger as we move forward together."

NFRW officers elected on Sept. 16 are:

*    PRESIDENT, Jody Rushton, Texas
*    1ST VICE PRESIDENT, Michelle Buckwalter-Schurman, Illinois
*    2ND VICE PRESIDENT, Eileen Sobjack, Washington
*    3RD VICE PRESIDENT, Julie Harris, Arkansas
*    4TH VICE PRESIDENT, Ann Schockett, New York
*    SECRETARY, Frances Taylor, Alabama
*    TREASURER, Vanessa LaFranco, New Jersey

Three members-at-large to the Executive Committee will be elected by the NFRW Board of Directors on Sept. 17.

"The women of the NFRW join me in congratulating Jody and the new administration and have the utmost confidence they will continue to lead our organization into a bright future," Almond said.

Founded in 1938, the National Federation of Republican Women is the largest and most influential Republican women's group in the nation, proudly representing the party that first made it possible for women to vote in the U.S. The NFRW works to increase the effectiveness and relevance of women in the cause of good government. Our mission remains to recruit and elect Republican candidates, promote the principles of the Republican Party, educate the public, and inform the media.

State Federation President Receives Honor

PHILADELPHIA - Florida Republican leader Dena Stebbins DeCamp was awarded the prestigious Ronald Reagan Leadership Award during the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) 39th Biennial Convention held Sept. 14-17 in Philadelphia.

A resident of Lakeland and president of the Florida Federation of Republican Women, DeCamp received the award at a luncheon on Sept. 16.

The award was established by the NFRW in 2005 to recognize the outstanding leadership of one state president and is presented every two years at the biennial convention.

From 2009-2014, she was president of Republican Women Federated of Lakeland and served as volunteer, team leader and field director for several campaigns. In 2014, Florida Gov. FRC, Jewish Institute for Global Awareness Calls Out Southern Poverty Law Center's Deafening Silence

September 13, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Family Research Council (FRC) and the Jewish Institute for Global Awareness issued a joint statement today questioning the Southern Poverty Law Center's deafening silence regarding an anti-semitic incident that took place this week at Tufts University. On Monday, the Washington Free Beacon reported that the university's Facebook page published "a student-made handbook that condemned the campus Jewish center for supporting Israel, which the guide called a 'white supremacist state.'" University administrators later removed the handbook from its social pages.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins and the Co-Directors of the Jewish Institute for Global Awareness, Arthur Goldberg and Elaine Silodor Berk, released the following joint statement:

"This week a Tufts University student-made handbook smeared a Jewish campus group for supporting what the handbook ludicrously called the 'white supremacist state' of Israel. University administrators removed the handbook after media outlets reported on the anti-Semitic incident. However, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which aims to establish itself as the preeminent authority on hate groups, made no public comment on the anti-Semitic smear. This is no surprise. Its deafening silence on incidents outside its preferred targets on the religious right cannot be ignored. While the SPLC wants to be viewed as a referee on the field of political debate, their demonization of mainstream conservatives and predictable silence on incidents like Tufts University's anti-Semitic handbook can only lead to one conclusion: the SPLC wants to be both referee and player. It's time the media recognize the SPLC for what it is ---a discredited left wing political group."

Family Research Council, NC Values Coalition File Joint Amicus Brief in Masterpiece Cakeshop SCOTUS

 September 13, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Family Research Council (FRC) along with the North Carolina Values Coalition have submitted a joint amicus brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. This case arose when Masterpiece Cakeshops' owner, Jack Phillips, was sued after respectfully declining to decorate a wedding cake celebrating a same-sex ceremony.

In the amicus brief, the groups argue:

"Constitution broadly guarantees liberty of religion and conscience to citizens who participate in public life according to their moral, ethical, and religious convictions.

Yet, "Colorado refuses to tolerate citizens who disagree with the state-sanctioned view of marriage," as the state "uses its anti-discrimination laws to impose crippling penalties on entrepreneurs who refuse to set aside conscience and create visual artwork that violates the owners' faith and conscience."

Contrary to ideals it purports to advance, "by demanding uniformity of thought, belief, speech, and action concerning the nature of marriage" and "by silencing one side of a hotly contested issue," the state of Colorado "promotes intolerance, uniformity, exclusion, and inequality… The result is an unconscionable inequality were people who hold traditional marriage beliefs are excluded from owning a public business. All of this is anathema to the First Amendment."

Travis Weber, Esq., Director of the Center for Religious Liberty, commented:

"To understand the issue at the center of this case people first need to know that Jack Phillips, for over twenty years, happily served thousands without regard to their sexual orientation. Phillips gladly offered to make any other type of baked item for the customers in this case, but explained that he could not in good conscience make a cake promoting a same-sex ceremony."

"The Court should take this opportunity to settle the question of whether states can coerce people of faith into wedding-related practices with which they disagree. The answer to that question should be an obvious 'no' and we hope the Court makes this clear by strongly affirming that all Americans' First Amendment free speech and free exercise rights are protected against such state coercion," Weber commented.

National Federation of Republican Women To Take Message,of Unity, Optimism to Philadelphia

September 6, 2017

Republican Leaders, Experts
to Address Biennial Convention

PHILADELPHIA - Building on its message of national unity and optimism that began during the 2016 elections, the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) - along with nearly 1,000 Republican women from across the nation -- will gather in Philadelphia for the organization's 39th Biennial Convention. The convention is scheduled Sept. 14-17 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, 1201 Market St.

In addition to conducting organizational business, the NFRW will hear from Republican elected officials and leaders such as New Jersey Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, who secured the Republican nomination in the New Jersey gubernatorial race earlier this year, and Kentucky Treasurer Allison Ball, the nation's youngest woman elected to statewide office.

Convention attendees will also participate in a series of training seminars, conducted by Republicans who are recognized nationally in their fields, that will help prepare them for grassroots victories in the elections coming up this fall and next year.

"Philadelphia is the bedrock upon which our great and unparalleled nation is built," NFRW President Carrie Almond said. "I can think of no better place to reflect on our rich history while also exploring the opportunities we have to come together and make America great again."

Conservative Movement Releases Open Letter to the News Media: Beware of the Southern Poverty Law Ce

September 6, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Family Research Council (FRC) today joined a coalition of 47 conservative leaders and organizations in releasing an open letter to news organizations, calling on the media to stop using data from the discredited Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

The SPLC has recklessly labeled dozens of mainstream conservative organizations as "hate groups." SPLC's labeling of FRC as a "hate group" was connected in federal court to an act of domestic terrorism committed five years ago at FRC's Washington headquarters by Floyd Corkins. Corkins confessed to the FBI that he used SPLC's "hate map" to choose FRC as a target for violence. More recently, James Hodgkinson, the attempted political assassin of House Majority Whip, Rep. Steve Scalise and many other Republican members of the U.S. House and Senate, was discovered to have "liked" the SPLC on Facebook.

The letter reads in part:

"We are writing to you as individuals or as representatives of organizations who are deeply troubled by several recent examples of the media's use of data from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). The SPLC is a discredited, left-wing, political activist organization that seeks to silence its political opponents with a 'hate group' label of its own invention and application that is not only false and defamatory, but that also endangers the lives of those targeted with it.

"The fifth anniversary has just passed of the terrorist event for which the SPLC's hate map and website were used to target its victims for political assassination. The following facts were established in the record of a federal court case. On August 15, 2012, Floyd Lee Corkins II entered the Family Research Council offices in Washington, D.C. and shot and badly wounded its building manager, Leo Johnson, who stopped his intended killing spree. According to his own statements to the FBI, Corkins intended to kill everyone in the building, and then go on to terrorize additional organizations.

"We believe the media outlets that have cited the SPLC in recent days have not intended to target mainstream political groups for violent attack, but by recklessly linking the Charlottesville melee to the mainstream groups named on the SPLC website -- those that advocate in the courts, the halls of Congress, and the press for the protection of conventional, Judeo-Christian values -- we are left to wonder if another Floyd Lee Corkins will soon be incited to violence by this incendiary information.

"That day, Corkins carried both the means to carry out this act of terrorism and a list of additional targets. The U.S. Attorney stated in federal court that Corkins targeted FRC and the additional targets by using the SPLC website's 'Hate Map.' On February 6, 2013, Corkins pleaded guilty to three felonies, and became the first person convicted of violating the District of Columbia's Anti-Terrorism Act of 2002.

"To associate public interest law firms and think tanks with neo-Nazis and the KKK is unconscionable, and it represents the height of irresponsible journalism to do so. All reputable news organizations should immediately stop using the SPLC descriptions of in individuals and organizations based on the SPLC's obvious political prejudices."
