WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Family Research Council today applauded President Trump and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for announcing a new policy that will allow states to defund abortionists from state Medicaid programs. HHS is reversing an Obama era Medicaid policy that prohibited states from removing certain types of providers, including abortion providers, from their state Medicaid programs despite federal authority for states to determine standards for qualified providers. HHS also released a new regulation that will give enforcement tools to HHS's Office of Civil Rights to handle conscience violations related to 25 federal laws that pertain to the beginning of and end of life.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement:
"President Trump is paving the way for states to finally be free to end the forced partnership between taxpayers and the nation's largest abortion organization, Planned Parenthood. It is past time for states to be free to cut ties with abortion providers within their Medicaid program, especially Planned Parenthood which has been referred for criminal prosecution and is currently under a Department of Justice criminal investigation for profiting off the sale of unborn baby body parts.
"I applaud President Trump for allowing states to bring this Obama era partnership with abortion providers in Medicaid to an end," concluded Perkins.
