WASHINGTON, D.C. -- On Friday, the same day hundreds of thousands descend on the city for the annual March for Life, the House of Representatives will vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (H.R. 4712). This legislation would require health care practitioners to provide life-saving medical care to babies born alive who survive an attempted abortion, just as they would do for other babies born at the same age of development. It will create criminal penalties to enforce what is currently only a definitional provision in federal law. The bill expressly prohibits any prosecution under this act of the mother of a child born-alive, and gives her a private right of action to seek relief if an abortionist were to kill or neglect her born-alive infant. Although a similar measure was signed into law by President Bush in 2003, it never had the teeth needed to hold the abortion industry accountable. Family Research Council (FRC) announced plans to score in favor of both the rule to consider the legislation and final passage of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.
Also, on Friday, prior to the March for Life, Family Research Council is hosting its 13th Annual ProLifeCon Digital Action Summit featuring House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), House Select Panel on Infant Lives Chairman Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) among other speakers.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement:
"The recent atrocities involving born-alive infants in Pennsylvania, where Kermit Gosnell 'snipped the necks' of babies born-alive combined with the horrifying videos exposing Planned Parenthood workers dissecting and selling the body parts of babies, possibly who were born-alive, it is essential that we make clear that born-alive infants are American citizens entitled to the full protection of our laws. America's abortion industry led by Planned Parenthood has worked hard to dehumanize unborn children, which has resulted in infanticide. This atrocity must stop. With Republicans in control of both Congress and the White House, it is time to restore and protect the humanity of all children and the passage of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act is a good start.
"On Friday, the massive crowd, which is anticipated for the March for Life will come excited to hear from a president who is following through on his promise to roll back Obama's devastating pro-abortion policies. House Republican leadership and lead sponsor Rep. Marsha Blackburn deserve praise for their effort to build a society in which all human life is a gift to be treasured," Perkins concluded.
