Springfield, VA - The Virginia Federation of Republican Women (VFRW) hosted a debate among the contenders for the Republican nomination to be Virginia's next Governor tonight at the Springfield Golf and Country Club in Springfield, VA. The sold out event had the maximum number of in-person attendees in the club's dining room in accordance with COVID 19 regulations. Over seven hundred others participated virtually. The invited candidates included Amanda Chase, Kirk Cox, Sergio de la Pena, Peter Doran, Octavia Johnson, Pete Snyder, and Glenn Youngkin. All attended except Pete Snyder who had a prior engagement. Ginni Thomas delivered remarks on his behalf. The debate was moderated by WMAL radio host Larry O'Connor and VFRW President Paula Steiner.
"I am awestruck by the amount of interest in this debate and in the candidates running for Governor this year," said VFRW President Paula Steiner, "Since Virginia is one of two states having statewide elections this year, and all eyes are upon us. Virginia is once again the bellwether state for what is to come politically."
The questions were submitted by the members of different VFRW clubs from around the Commonwealth and included issues such as improving election integrity, combatting divisive curriculum in our schools, upholding the rule of law, promoting economic development, and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The order in which candidates answered questions was determined by pseudo random number generator.
"This type of debate format allows voters to not only see what unites our candidates, but also what sets them apart," said Steiner, "I'm really pleased with the amount of talent shown by our candidates. No matter what happens on May 8th, we are building a bench for the future."
The Republican Party of Virginia will select its statewide candidates at an unassembled convention on Saturday, May 8th with delegates voting at polling locations in each jurisdiction. The number of registered delegates is now at a record breaking 53,524.
"And following the Republican convention on May 8th, the National Federation of Republican Women's President Ann Shockett announced that the NFRW will send a strike force team to help our statewide candidates win in November," concluded Steiner.
The Virginia Federation of Republican Women is a diverse group of patriotic women and a member of the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW), one of the largest volunteer organizations in the country. Chartered in 1953, the VFRW is the largest such organization in the Commonwealth of Virginia. With nearly 1,700 members and 45 active clubs, the VFRW exerts an influence on local, state and federal policy and is a force within Virginia Republican Party. Membership in the VFRW is available to any Republican women in the Commonwealth of Virginia through clubs located in all Congressional Districts.
