Congressman Bob Good: Congressman Good Update: Working to Keep Virginians Safe

A Bipartisan Push for the Wintergreen Emergency Road

This week I joined Virginia Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner to introduce bipartisan and bicameral legislation to support the construction of an emergency access road for Wintergreen residents in Nelson County. There is currently only one road in and out of Wintergreen, which has sparked growing concern among residents and local officials about their safety in the event of a fire or other natural disaster.

For the past 30 years, a National Park Service legal interpretation has prevented the Wintergreen community from receiving permission to build the needed emergency exit road. This bill, the Blue Ridge Fire Safety Act of 2024, is the second bill I have introduced to solve this issue, and it provides a commonsense solution that would permit Wintergreen to create a new road for use only in the case of a life-threatening emergency. The proposed gravel road would be built near Milepost 9.6 and connect Laurel Springs Drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway and would be gated off to prevent any use or access outside of an emergency.

I am pleased to have initiated this legislation and worked with the Park Service and Senators Kaine and Warner to provide a greater degree of safety for these 5th District constituents. We cannot let bureaucratic precedent continue to compromise the safety of our citizens, and I will continue to work to ensure this bill becomes law.

The Federal Government Must Not Fund Critical Race Theory

I participated this week in a hearing by the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, where we discussed the Biden Administration's efforts to encourage and fund the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in government schools. CRT presents everything through a racial lens, distorts our nation's history, denies the progress we have made in America, and defines everyone based on race. You can listen to my remarks below.

Meetings in Washington

It was a privilege to meet in the Capitol with senior students from Rustburg High School in Campbell County. Thank you to government teacher Dylan Slaughter for arranging the trip.

I had the opportunity to join my friend, Congressman Matt Rosendale from Montana, and others for a tour of the Capitol dome. We enjoyed the beautiful view of Washington from the 288-foot pinnacle of the world's most recognizable structure. It has truly been a wonderful privilege to serve these past four years as your representative in Congress.

In the Media

I had the opportunity to speak with various media outlets about President Biden's pardon of his son Hunter Biden, President Trump's cabinet picks, and more.

Serving Virginia's 5th District

At the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer of the House of Representatives, my Washington office closed its doors on November 26, in order to facilitate the transition to a new representative in January.  However, my DC staff will continue to work remotely until Congress finishes the session in late December.

My district office in Lynchburg remains open for a limited time, and the team is diligently pursuing a successful conclusion for our current workload of about 200 constituent cases.  If you need help with a federal agency and do not currently have a case open with us, we are happy to refer you to one of your United States Senators.

Thank you for the privilege of representing you in Washington.
