George Allen: Sparking America's Comeback

George Allen has released his "Blueprint for America's Comeback."

“It's a pro-growth plan of action to jump start job creation, increase competitiveness, and promote freedom and opportunity for all. Our comprehensive plan will send a clear message to the rest of the world that "America is Open for Business."

These are challenging times for our nation, and for many the American Dream feels like it's slipping away. It's time to restore confidence in the drive and ingenuity of the American workforce and get back in control of our own economic destiny. Key components of my plan include:

· Making America Competitive for Job Creators

· Unleashing America's Plentiful Energy Resources and Creativity

· Reining in the Over-Reaching, Over-Spending Federal Government

.

By promoting pro-growth policies that allow businesses to do what they do best - innovate, produce and create jobs - we can change the trajectory of the American economy and return to economic prosperity.”

George Allen: Standing Strong for Freedom

Latest Federal Assault on Freedom

That is the word to describe the latest federal assault on the freedoms of America's working men and women. In the latest example of over-reaching by the intrusive federal government, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is attempting to block the Boeing Corporation from moving some operations from the State of Washington to South Carolina. South Carolina, like Virginia, is a Right-to-Work state where men and women are not compelled to pay union dues as a condition of employment.

Nowhere in the Constitution is power granted to any appointed group - or the unelected bureaucrats who staff them - to dictate to American companies where they can or cannot locate their businesses and create jobs. This unprecedented power grab can only be seen as an unconstitutional restraint of free trade within the U.S. This decision by President Obama's administration should send shock waves through every Right-to-Work state in the country, including our Commonwealth of Virginia.

Right-to-Work laws are a matter of personal liberty - they protect working men and women from being forced to join a union and pay dues just to get a job. As Governor I saw firsthand how Virginia's Right-to Work laws made our state more competitive for recruiting businesses and creating jobs here in Virginia. Being the furthest state North on the Eastern Seaboard with Right-to-Work laws gives Virginia a great competitive advantage.

As Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Tim Kaine chose to stand with big union bosses as they fought against reforms that would balance Wisconsin's state budget. Unlike Tim Kaine, I will always stand on the side of freedom and opportunity for Virginia's working men and women, not on the side of big union bosses.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and U.S. Senator Jim DeMint are leading the fight to protect the freedoms of American workers - but they need our help. This is a fight we should all join to protect our foundational freedoms and the economic competitiveness of our country. Virginians understand that job creation only flourishes when you provide families and small businesses the freedom to succeed. If elected to the United States Senate I will lead the fight to protect Virginia from the federal government's attacks on our Right-to Work laws and economic competitiveness.

STOP the Spending

"As I meet with and listen to Virginians it is clear that "We the People" are ready for Washington to stop being part of the problem. We urgently need real solutions and achievable reforms to create more American job opportunities in a competitive, prospering economy and stop loading us and our children with dangerous mountains of debt. The federal government's exploding debt has become a national crisis, and it is urgent that Congress act now. Yesterday, 47 Republican Senators took a good first step to help rein in federal deficit spending and unveiled a Balanced Budget Constitutional Amendment. But we need to go further to change the way Washington does business.

"I have been a longtime supporter of a comprehensive budget reform plan that includes the Balanced Budget Amendment with taxpayer protection as well as presidential line-item veto authority and a "paycheck penalty" that would withhold Members' salaries when they don't pass a budget on time. If Congress didn't get paid until they completed their appropriations work, I can guarantee we wouldn't be more than halfway through the fiscal year with no budget in sight.

Incredibly, Senators Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer and their followers in Washington continue to obstruct reform and defend the status quo. Serious choices need to be made in Washington. Before there is any vote to increase the debt ceiling, Democrats must allow the Senate to vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment and make immediate and meaningful cuts in wasteful spending. I don't know anyone outside of Washington who thinks the out of control, unaccountable federal government is operating at 100% efficiency. More than ever, restraint and a healthy dose of discipline is needed to control how Washington spends taxpayer money.

The 2012 election is going to be pivotal in determining the trajectory of our country. It is more important than ever to stop this unsustainable spending coming of Washington."

George Allen: Stop This Unsustainable Spending

"This week the liberals in Washington like Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and President Obama proved they are ignoring the voices of We the People who are demanding that Washington rein in government spending. Rather than tackle our fiscal crisis head-on, President Obama introduced a budget that will add at least $13 trillion to our debt by borrowing more, taxing more and allowing Washington to continue to live beyond its means. Just four years ago, the budget deficit was at a problematic $160 billion. Today it is ten times that amount and the problem is worse.

We also marked the two-year anniversary of the $800 billion jobless stimulus bill that promised to keep unemployment under 8%. Instead, the American people have suffered through 21 months of over 9-percent unemployment, 2.6 million jobs lost and a record $14 trillion in national debt.

It is clear that the policies President Obama and his liberal friends in Washington have advocated have only increased the amount of debt our children will have to bear and have done nothing to create jobs. We need to start executing our nation’s budget with the same discipline that small businesses and families use across the country. We must work to reduce taxes on job creators, regulate the unelected regulators, unleash our plentiful energy resources to create more jobs and finally embrace a balanced budget.

The 2012 election is going to be pivotal in determining the trajectory of our country. It is more important than ever to stop this unsustainable spending coming out of Washington."

George Allen Statement on State of the Union

- Washington Speeches Must be Matched with Action, Visions of Role of Government Contrast –

Mt. Vernon, VA – President Barack Obama tonight spoke to a joint session of Congress and the nation in the annual State of the Union address. George Allen issued the following statement:
“No one disputes that President Obama is a gifted orator, but we need the right actions more than the right words. People want to reverse job-destroying policies and instead unleash America’s businesses and entrepreneurs to create jobs.

“Since Senator Jim Webb went to Washington and embraced the liberal policies of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, we have had rising joblessness and skyrocketing national debt. Talk of simply freezing spending now is much more than a day late and trillions of dollars short.

“I’m one who believes that if government reduces burdensome regulations, keeps taxes low, and unleashes our plentiful energy resources then entrepreneurs in the private sector will innovate and create jobs so more Americans can achieve their dreams.”

Quote of the Day

“As a former governor, I am keenly aware of the value of Virginia's Right-to-Work law in attracting and keeping jobs in the Commonwealth. Senator Webb either does not understand our Right-to-Work law or willfully ignores its value in deference to his big labor benefactors."

Quote of the Day

"Even a global depression lasting several decades would not be enough to lower CO2 concentrations from today's level--roughly 390 parts per million--to 350 ppm, the new politically correct "stabilization" target advocated by former Vice President Al Gore, the Center for Biological Diversity and numerous other environmental groups. Yet under the Clean Air Act, states are obligated to attain NAAQS within five years or, at most, 10 years. The endangerment finding thus sets the stage for environmental activists to transform the Act into a deindustrialization mandate via litigation. The Murkowski resolution would nip all this mischief in the bud."

Quote of the Day

"Just as we did at the foundation of our great nation, the Commonwealth of Virginia continues to lead.

As soon as the ink dried on President Obama's signature making official the federal takeover of our healthcare system, my friend, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, filed suit in federal court to protect the people and laws of Virginia.

And not surprisingly, some of the Democrats in Virginia have launched attacks. First, they sent out a college professor to criticize the merits of Ken's lawsuit. It turned out that this professor was a major donor to the Democratic Party and was a member of the radical liberal group MoveOn.org.

The next attack on Ken was that he was wasting our hard earned tax dollars on this lawsuit.

Well, as it turned out, that lawsuit cost the taxpayers a total of $350 dollars.

Yesterday, I was proud to see Governor McDonnell officially sign legislation introduced by Senators Jill Vogel and Steve Martin that makes it illegal to force Virginians to purchase health insurance. Virginia continues to lead, but we are not done yet.

Many of you have asked how you can support Attorney General Cuccinelli's principled leadership on this important issue.

The answer is simple, and in this particular case it doesn't revolve around money or spending hours volunteering. Ken needs you to sign to his petition today.

Ken's petition can be found at his website www.Cuccinelli.com.

Once you have signed this petition, please forward it to five of your closest friends and ask them to sign the petition as well. This is too important to wait!

Virginia is on solid legal footing, but we need to show that we have the support of voters such as you.

Thank you for standing strong for freedom with us for the rights and prerogatives of the people of Virginia."

Coal: A Reliable and Inexpensive Energy Source

In response to Blue Virginia’s post citing the Washington Post saying coal mining only accounts “2 percent of employment in central Appalachian region”, Governor Allen wrote the following for GeorgeAllen.com.

Coal Jobs Vital for Virginia, America
By George Allen
It is wise to diversify job opportunities in the Coalfields of Southwest Virginia and elsewhere in Appalachia. But these writers, who are against or unfriendly to coal, are concocting misleading facts to diminish the positive attributes of American coal.

The Reality is that coal mining provides very good-paying jobs for those involved directly in mining as well as for people who manufacture and supply mining equipment and those who transport coal to electric power plants, steel mills and our Virginia Ports. A job is important to all men and women whether in retail or mining. These writers miss the fact that coal-related jobs pay more than retail jobs.

All of us who use electricity benefit from American coal, which by all measurement is the most available, reliable and least expensive source of power. Beyond the hundreds of thousands of American jobs related to American coal, the coal severance taxes in Southwest Virginia actually help fund the attraction of new businesses via the Coalfields Economic Development Authority.

As a country, we are blessed with plentiful coal resources. Rather than become more dependent on foreign, more expensive or intermittent energy sources, let’s creatively and cleanly utilize our American coal.

From this morning’s Washington Post comes a factual response to those who claim, against all evidence to the contrary, that the highly mechanized form of coal extraction known as “mountaintop removal” is a major employer in Appalachia (or anywhere else). As Justin Maxson, president of the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development, explains, it’s not.

The Obama Dream for Americans is a Nightmare

Statement from former Governor George Allen

Allen: “Americans want job opportunity and debt reduction ideas emitted from government.”

Mt. Vernon, Va. – Former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen issued the following statement today in reaction to President Obama’s new rules that the federal government reduce its emissions by 28% over the next decade:

“President Obama’s call for a 28% reduction in the federal government’s emissions is a worthy goal if it reduces taxpayers’ costs by 28%. Government must operate more efficiently by adopting the most innovative technologies, systems and equipment for heating, cooling, and illuminating government buildings, and reducing transportation and operational costs.

“Virginians and Americans wish to be served by an Administration looking to cut government spending as well as government emissions. Washington is creating a nightmare scenario with unprecedented deficits, steep inflation and potential sharp tax increases to pay for burgeoning debt. Americans are concerned that this unprecedented, dangerous debt will mean our children will not enjoy the same levels of opportunity that past American generations have enjoyed to achieve the American Dream.

“The Administration’s “spending freeze”, which amounts to a less than 1% reduction in spending sometime after elections this November, does not go far enough. Additionally, although the White House anticipates $15 billion in savings with this “freeze”, it has already spent almost $900 billion on a failed stimulus that has created no jobs, and is proposing upwards of $100 billion more in “stimulus”. We the people call on the President and Congress to set spending reduction goals closer to 28% than 1%.”

Hooray for Scott Brown!

Statement from former Governor George Allen

Mt. Vernon, Va. – Former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen issued the following statement today, Congratulating Scott Brown and calling on Washington Democrats to “start over” on health care reform.

“Susan and I congratulate Scott Brown for his impressive, inspiring victory and for running an honest, ideas-based campaign.

“I’m sure we can all find it wonderfully ironic that one of the Tea Parties’ greatest victories to date came in Massachusetts, which is where this movement derived its name and philosophy. Scott Brown’s historic election is getting the attention of Washington officials who need to listen to the American people. I think we will be watching with great interest in the days and weeks ahead to see how some in Washington will run for cover trying to hide their role in the massively expensive government-run health care experiment, while others may defiantly push forward to pass it in the face of clear opposition from Americans all across the country.

“I call on Democrats to join their Republican colleagues to start over and put forth common sense health care reforms. Options such as Health Savings Accounts could benefit all Americans and make health insurance more affordable, personalized and portable rather than enacting more national debt, higher taxes dictates and unfunded mandates from Washington.

“I also hope that Democrats avoid any gamesmanship while seating Scott Brown. As he pointed out during his campaign, this is the people’s seat and they spoke loud and clear last night.”

How energy prices affect one family

The American Energy Freedom Center, a non-profit project of the Institute for Energy Research, has a great new video. Take a look.

"This video is a highlight of our soon to be released Energy Table Talk with the High Impact Leadership Coalition and the Cornwall Alliance. American Energy Freedom Center Chairman George Allen hosts the discussion with Bishop Harry Jackson and a few of his congregants. One family discusses the tough choices they have to make today because of the high prices in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Listen to their concerns about a federal cap and trade policy, in their own words…

FYI

The Southern Governors’ Association (SGA) will meet in Virginia this Friday to discuss global warming and energy policy. Even though a recent SGA briefing backgrounder recognized that more must be done “to help families cope with higher energy prices” that result from cap and trade, several prominent governors attending the conference seemingly remain oblivious to the plight of working families who will bear the brunt of rising costs of living. Governors are being asked to overlook those concerns and form state climate panels as well as a regional climate partnership, in an effort to reinforce the faltering efforts to pass a national climate change tax.

In June, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a 1,500-page cap-and-trade bill that few (if any) Members of Congress had actually read; the last 300 pages were added in the middle of the night before the final vote. The bill passed by a razor-thin margin.

Credible estimates are that the House bill would cost the average family of four $103 per month in direct energy costs and another $283 per month in indirect costs, or over $4,600 per year. The U.S. Senate will take up cap-and-trade policy when it reconvenes in September, and a final vote is expected this fall."

Statement from Governor George Allen

Mount Vernon, Va. – Former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen issued the following statement today, congratulating Michael Steele for being elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee.

“Congratulations to my good friend Michael Steele for his historic, hard-fought victory and becoming the next Chairman of the Republican National Committee. These contests amongst friends are always very contentious and I have a great deal of admiration for all those who entered the battleground today. I am confident in Chairman Steele’s vision, tenacity and character to lead our RNC team and grow our Party.

“The truth is that voters don’t care about Republican versus Democrat, or conservative versus liberal. They care about the ideas and solutions that will have a positive impact on their lives. Republican need to restart our creative engines to motivate and inspire people behind our ideas and solutions for job growth and economic competitiveness, a strong national defense, better schools with more choice and strategic energy independence. And I believe Michael Steele will articulate these ideas to get more Americans to join our efforts to improve America as a land of opportunity for all.”

Quote of the Day

Statement from former Governor George Allen

Mount Vernon, Va. – Former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen issued the following statement today, mourning the loss of Tony Snow.

“Susan and I are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our friend Tony Snow. He was truly an exceptionally positive, wonderful friend and a leader in all his pursuits in life. He was always grounded in foundational principles and understood the sentiments of the American people.

“Our family enjoyed seeing him at church from time to time and were inspired by his cheerful spirit. We all must remain inspired by Tony and enjoy life to the fullest. Our prayers are with, and our hearts ache, for his dear wife Jill and their three children, in whom Tony’s blood and spirit lives on. So many people were blessed to have had Tony as a true friend and optimistic leader for wholesome American values.”

Quote of the Day

"Ideas and solutions that work should be models to be shared and refined. When President Ronald Reagan signed legislation to abolish parole in the federal system in 1984, he recognized that the existing sentencing and parole system was adding to rising crime rates and was fundamentally unfair to the victims of crime and to the public. This was a major shift in criminal justice policy and served as inspiration for changes I advocated during my campaign for governor of Virginia in 1993. Parole abolition and truth-in-sentencing have worked to make Virginians safer and brought credibility to the justice system."

George Allen

Mr. Allen served as Virginia’s governor and U.S. senator. He is currently the Reagan Ranch Presidential Scholar for Young America’s Foundation.
