RICHMOND - Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins today praised Governor Tim Kaine's decision to agree with Ken Cuccinelli to call the Virginia General Assembly into a special session to fix a prosecutorial morass following the U.S. Supreme Court decision Melendez-Diaz v. Massachusetts. The ruling has caused chaos among Virginia Commonwealth's Attorneys regarding the difficulty in having forensic scientists who test material evidence personally testify at trial. As a result, many criminal cases are having to be dismissed or are lost at trial.

"Steve Shannon, the Democratic nominee for attorney general, initially called Ken Cuccinelli's request for a special session a ‘stunt,'" said Mullins. "Well, I guess the governor from his own party disagrees with him. I don't think that's the kind of thing you want to pull if you're arguing to be the state's top lawyer."

In response to Ken Cuccinelli's first call for a legislative fix, Shannon said it was a "stunt," a position he continues to trumpet by posting a supportive editorial on his website.

Perhaps even more embarrassingly, Shannon criticized Cuccinelli for supposedly opposing a bill that never reached the Senate, in which Cuccinelli serves. Inasmuch as Cuccinelli was never able to vote on the legislation, it further reveals that not only is Shannon ignorant of Supreme Court precedent vis-à-vis Virginia law, but he also does not understand the legislative process.

Shannon's House Bill 3086 died in committee in the House of Delegates and was never communicated to the Senate, where Cuccinelli might have had a chance to weigh in on it.

"This is astounding," Chairman Mullins said. "This guy seriously wants to be the attorney general of the Commonwealth, but doesn't get the severity of a Supreme Court ruling and doesn't know that his own bill died in committee. That's almost too funny to make up."

Kaine Buckles on DNC Travel: More Time than Reported

RICHMOND - More than a month after Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins issued a Freedom of Information Act request for details of Governor Tim Kaine's travel in his role as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, the governor has acquiesced and released his prior schedule to the Washington Post. With the revelation that Kaine was absent from Virginia for half of the month of June, Mullins called on Kaine to return to serious matters at home as the Commonwealth struggles with high unemployment, budget shortfalls and a transportation crisis that shows no signs of lessening.

"What is a shame is that it took many weeks of prodding and poking around to get the governor to do what he should have done all along, which is tell us where he has been when he is not doing the work of the people of Virginia," Mullins said. "I firmly believe that if we hadn't made this an issue, Tim Kaine would still be hiding his travel schedule from the people who elected him to do an important job."

Mullins sent the governor a FOIA request on June 19, 2009, which was rejected five days later. At least two media outlets - the Washington Post and the Associated Press - filed similar requests and were likewise denied, until Kaine felt pressure enough to release greater detail to the Post. Nonetheless, the spreadsheet provided gives only dates and locations, not the purposes for the trips.

"What we find now is that Tim Kaine has been less than honest with Virginia as to the extent of his travel on behalf of his national political party," Mullins said. "Gone for half of the month of June? With unemployment hitting high double digits in Southside? This borders on governmental malpractice. Why was he in Naples, Florida? Why was he in Minneapolis? We want to know that stuff."

Evolution of an Excuse

Kaine's explanation of his job as DNC chairman has undergone a remarkable transformation since his initial emergence as a rumored candidate for Vice President in 2008. Initially, Kaine flatly ruled out taking on the political role as being in conflict with his duties as governor. Since then, something clearly has changed.

Not Interested in DNC Post

"I don't view that, frankly, as consistent with being governor, so I'm going to be governor,' Kaine said in November 2008. "I would view it as taking my eye too much off the ball about things that need to happen here." (Roanoke Times, November 13, 2008)

Well, Okay

He also praised the NEA because the organization has "power" and "hundreds of millions" of dollars from dues to spend in promoting their agenda and political candidates.

RICHMOND - Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins today drew a contrast between Republican candidate for Governor of Virginia Bob McDonnell and his Democratic opponent, Creigh Deeds. McDonnell unveiled a comprehensive, expansive plan to refurbish and fund transportation improvements, while Deeds offered a set of amorphous platitudes and an embarrassing admission that he did not have any idea at all how he would pay for any needed improvements to infrastructure and maintenance.

"During his first year in office, Creigh will make it his top priority to find a workable, creative transportation solution," Deeds wrote in his economic development plan.

"I'm not going to tie myself to any specific plan to fund transportation," Deeds said (Virginian-Pilot, July 20, 2009).

"It speaks volumes about the differences between these two candidates that Bob McDonnell has put pen to paper and drawn up a transportation vision that hits all of the right marks and employs mechanisms to pay for them without tax increases," Chairman Mullins said. "Creigh Deeds, on the other hand, looks like he sent an intern to Starbucks with a laptop to bang out something to buy time until he can safely raise taxes to build roads."

The McDonnell Plan

• Privatize Virginia's Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and dedicate proceeds to transportation
• Pass legislation to capture increased revenue from growth in port operations, and invest in regional transportation projects
• Take percentage of sales tax collected in Northern Virginia and put in regional transportation account
• Issue $3 billion in available bonds for transportation, and support future bond issuance of $1 billion for highly congested areas

The Deeds "Plan"

• The plan must be long-term in scope, with long-range, multi-modal solutions that move people and goods more efficiently;

• The plan must be statewide in conception, so that every part of the Commonwealth has a stake in the outcome; and

• The plan must be creative in nature, incorporating innovative solutions like incentives for telecommuting and bus rapid transit.

Friends Don't Let Friends Have Obamacare

Obama’s Risky Experiment In Socialism

Speaking at the National Press Club yesterday, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele leveled a scathing attack on the Obama Administration and its reckless rush to reform healthcare, which he flatly called “socialism.” Here are some excerpts of his remarks:

“So far, [Obama’s] experiments in that economic laboratory called Congress have simply failed or blown up. President Obama told us that his stimulus package would keep unemployment under eight percent. It’s now at 9.5% and now he tells us that unemployment will go over ten percent anyway. That experiment cost us 787 billion dollars. …His next big ticket item is a risky multi-trillion dollar experiment with our health care, including a government-run health care plan. …

“President Obama says he wants to reduce health care costs. …But here is my question: how come the Democrat's plan to save money will cost us more money? How come their plan to reduce health care costs ... will cost us trillions more in tax dollars? Democrats boast that their plans cost ‘only’ about one trillion dollars…Only Washington could make saving money more expensive. …Let’s just use common-sense here: when has Washington ever made anything cost less?”
Steele also warned, “If we screw this up, it could last a generation. And Congress is trying to do this in the next two weeks. All of us should be scared to death.” Steele is right. Obama and the Democrats are experimenting with socialism, and no one knows exactly how much it is going to cost us or whether it will even work. But we do know that the bill includes higher taxes, more debt, Big Government mandates and fines for individuals who don’t want ObamaCare.

Obama Pushes a Radical Abortion Plan

Abortion Will Be the Rule Without Exceptions

Experts from both sides are waking up to what we all knew already - that is without specific exclusions, forcing taxpayers to fund abortions will become the norm under the current health care plans being discussed in Congress right now. The latest admission comes from White House budget director Peter Orszag, who yesterday told Fox News Sunday that the White House is not looking to remove abortion coverage under any government plan being discussed in Congress. Mr. Orszag's comments came just two days after 20 pro-life Democrats sent a letter, headed up by Pro-Life Caucus chairman Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), to the House Democratic Leadership letting them know that the signatories "cannot support any health care reform proposal unless it explicitly excludes abortion from the scope of any government-defined or subsidized health insurance plan."

With the House health care bill (H.R. 3200) getting more and more criticism from both sides of the aisle, every single vote will be important in this debate in helping to highlight the importance of the pro-life concerns in the bill. Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) has highlighted in a letter to his colleagues the public comments of officials like President Barack Obama and pro-abortion groups, excited that the new health care plan will definitely cover abortion - unless we move to stop them. Seventy-one percent of Americans do not want to pay for abortion nor have their employers provide health care that pays for abortion, according to a November 2008 Zogby poll. Eighty-seven percent of American adults in an April survey by The Polling Company said it is important to "make sure that healthcare professionals in America are not forced to participate in procedures and practices to which they have moral objections." Clearly, under its current form, health care legislation without specific exclusions would fund and mandate abortion coverage, trump state pro-life laws and undermine healthcare workers' conscience rights.
