Information Alert: Teacher Union Violates Parent Trust
Earlier this week news stories broke about the fact that the VEA sent an email to its members that said, “teachers should wear blue Tuesday for ‘Obama Blue Day’ and to ‘register two voters or talk to two people who may be on the fence/or a McCain supporter and sway them to become a Obama supporter."
“There are people out there not yet registered. You teach some of them.”
The email went on to say, “Let's make Obama Blue Day a day of Action!” and, “Barack the vote!”
Obviously, the “teach some of them” is an encouragement to manipulate and indoctorinate students of voting age to support and vote of Barak Obama. In 2000, The Family Foundation supported a bill that became law that says schools must not require students “to convey or deliver any materials that advocate the election or defeat of any candidate for elective office.” The VEA’s action may not break the letter of the law, it certainly violates the spirit of the law, while also violating the trust parents have placed in their children’s teachers.
Of course, the VEA was quick to downplay the email when it became public. In fact, VEA president Kitty Boitnott defended the email, saying that it was a non-partisan effort to register voters and that the author did not “intend” to encourage teachers to recruit students to vote for Obama.
Seriously, these people really do think that we are all idiots.
The VEA has a long history of extreme liberal positions. They have had on their agenda reversing the state’s law (now in the Constitution) banning civil unions and have made special rights for homosexuals a top priority. Their parent organization, the National Education Association (NEA) is one of the most extreme organziations in the nation, calling for unlimited abortion on demand, the redefinition of marriage, and on an on.
Virginia’s teachers do not have to put up with this blatant political agenda. They have other options. The Virginia Professional Educators offers even better insurance policies and other benefits without any political agenda. If you are a teacher who feels forced to be part of the VEA I urge you to check out the VPE.
Those of you who are parents, I encourage you to make sure that the teachers you have entrusted your children with are not undermining the values and principles you teach at home. We cannot sit by and watch the next generation be indoctrinated.
