January 13, 2022

Left a Democrat Controlled Senate Health and Education Subcommittee 5 to 2 with a Recommendation to "Kill" SB 793 When It Comes Before the Full Senate Health and Education Committee on Thursday, January 19

Senator Chase's SB793 Prescription for Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin for treatment, left a Senate Subcommittee with a recommendation to kill SB793 today in a Democrat Controlled Senate Subcommittee on Health Professions which consists of 5 Democrats and 4 Republicans.
The bill seeks to ensure doctors are not penalized when they chose to prescribe Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin for the treatment of Covid-19.

CHESTERFIELD, VA -  SB793 Prescription for Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin for treatment left a Democrat Controlled Senate Subcommittee on Health Professions with the recommendation to "kill" SB793. The only doctor in the room, Republican Senator Siobhan Dunnavant spoke in favor of the bill. All Republicans on this committee have indicated they support this bill, despite all not being present. Even with all Republicans present, this bill would not have had the votes.

VOTES:
The Senate Education and Health Sub-Committee on Health Professions consists of 9 Senators. 5 Democrat Senators Barker, Saslaw, Edwards, Lewis and Hashmi and 4 Republican Senators Newman, Dunnavant, Suetterlein and Pillion. All Republicans support the legislation.

Voting in favor were Republican Senators Dunnavant and Suetterlein. Voting against were Democrat Senators Barker, Saslaw, Edwards, and Hashmi. Not present were Republican Senators Pillion and Newman, who have both voted for in the past and continue to support the bill.

This bill will be reported to the full Senate Health and Education on Thursday, January 19 at 8am in Senate Room A in the Pocahontas Building. Supporters of the bill are encouraged to reach out to Democrats on the full Senate Health and Education committee to support SB793 and thank all Republicans on the committee for supporting.

Republicans Senators Pillion and Newman have both indicated they would have voted in favor of the bill had they been present, but even if they had voted yes, the bill would still have failed because of the 5 to 4 makeup of the subcommittee. The bill will come up again in the full Senate Health and Education Committee this coming Thursday. Please reach out to the Senate Democrats on this committee and encourage them to support this SB793.

"Thousands of Virginians have already died from Covid-19, and yet many lives could have been saved had these patients had immediate access to Ivermectin early, when they were experiencing symptoms. Unfortunately, these 2 known cost effective therapeutics, which have been widely available and considered as safe were politicized and demonized. Hundred of doctors across the Commonwealth who support using known therapeutics believe that doctors not politicians should be determining medical treatment. A huge thanks to Republican Senator Dr. Siobhan Dunnavant for speaking in favor of this life saving bill which prohibits doctors from being penalized for prescribing Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of Covid. It is perplexing that Democrats who overtly express their support of "being pro-choice" would deny practicing board certified doctors from exercising their right along with their patient's right to choice." Senator Amanda Chase.

SB793 Prescription for Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin for treatment declares that licensed healthcare providers with prescriptive authority have the fundamental right to:

  1. Prescribe Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin to Covid-19 patients
  2. Administer Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin to Covid-19 patients
  3. Dispense Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin to Covid-19 patients

This bill prohibits the Board of Medicine from initiating a disciplinary action against a licensed healthcare provider solely for prescribing, administering or dispensing Hydroxychloroquine or Ivermectin to any patient who has been clinically diagnosed with Covid-19, providing the diagnosis and treatment has been documented in the patients medical record by a licensed healthcare provider.

"No patient who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 should ever be denied treatment with medications proven effective and licensed providers should never be in fear of penalty for prescribing such medications," stated Senator Chase.
