Federation for American Immigration Reform: FAIR Lays Out Legislative Agenda for the New Congress

Focus Must Be on Permanently Ending Failed Open-Borders Policies

(Washington, D.C., December 23, 2024) With a new presidential administration and a new Congress set to assume power in 2025, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) has issued a detailed agenda for securing our borders, ensuring our immigration laws are enforced, establishing legal immigration policies that serve the national interest and defending voting integrity after four years of mass illegal immigration.

"Immigration was a key issue in an election that returned Donald Trump to the White House and put Republicans in control of both houses of Congress. FAIR's legislative agenda for the 119th Congress provides legislators with a blueprint for what needs to be done to clean up the disastrous immigration policies of the past four years. We must ensure that no future administration can abuse its power to undermine the integrity of our immigration laws and the interests of the American people the way the Biden-Harris administration did," said Dan Stein, president of FAIR.

The security of our borders remains of paramount concern to the American people after four chaotic years in which some 11 million people entered our country illegally, along with roughly two million gotaways who evaded border agents entirely. These illegal border-crossers included violent criminals and people on the terror watch list who flagrantly abused our humanitarian programs. FAIR's legislative agenda lays out urgent steps that Congress must take to end these abuses. Among these steps:

  • Requiring DHS to complete construction of the border wall.

  • Ending catch-and-release policies.

  • Curbing abuse of our asylum and parole laws.

  • Amending laws and legal settlements that have encouraged a surge of unaccompanied minors and human trafficking.

These and other much-needed reforms were part of H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, which was passed by the House of Representatives in 2023, but quashed by Senate leaders who refused to bring it to the floor. "With control of the Senate transferring to Republicans and a president who is prepared to sign these commonsense reforms into law, FAIR is urging swift action on this legislation in 2025," Stein said.

The actions of the Biden-Harris administration also demand that Congress act to ensure that no administration can arbitrarily refuse to enforce immigration laws or substitute its own policies in place of established statutes. "For the past four years, the Biden-Harris administration has simply ignored most immigration laws. Early in the administration, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas narrowly defined which illegal border-crossers would be subject to enforcement and declared, falsely, that merely being in the country illegally was not grounds for removal. Congress must act decisively to rein in such sweeping claims of prosecutorial discretion," stated Stein.

"In addition to refusing to enforce the law, the outgoing administration claimed unlimited authority to parole anyone they wanted into the country and to grant them authorization to work in the United States. This, too, must stop," Stein continued. "Our laws were crafted under the assumption that the Executive Branch would faithfully carry them out. Unfortunately, the past four years have demonstrated that faith alone is not enough."

FAIR's legislative agenda also calls for an overhaul of our legal immigration system, which is bloated and outdated. "It is clear that our legal immigration process, which promotes family-based chain migration, is not serving the interests of the nation. It needs to be replaced with a merit-based immigration policy that evaluates people based on what they can contribute to the common good of the country, not on who they are related to," Stein said.

"There is a lot to be done to end mass illegal immigration.  We must remove people who shouldn't be here and implement a fairer legal immigration system that better serves the interests of the nation. And we must act swiftly. FAIR's legislative agenda provides lawmakers a road map for addressing the priorities of the American people and ensuring that their interests cannot be subverted again by a lawless administration bent on using immigration policy to advance its own ideological interests," Stein concluded.

Derrick Max: Your December 8, 2024 Sunday Summary: Election Certified, Bipartisanship in VA, VPAP Index, Republican Infighting, Safety Inspections, Standards, Green Extremism, WMATA...and more!

1.) It is official, the Virginia electoral board certified the 2024 results. John O'Bannon, chair of the election board, called the election "safe and fair."

2.) Bipartisanship hit Virginia this week, as Democratic Sens. Kaine and Warner joined Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Attorney General Jason Miyares in criticizing President Biden's pardon of his son, Hunter. Maybe this isn't the kind of bipartisanship we can build on?

3.) The Virginia Public Access Project has updated their VPAP Index which ranks every House District in Virginia based on their vote in the last presidential election and the 2021 gubernatorial election. The chart shows that HD43 in Southwest Virginia is the most conservative (approx. 70 percent Republican) and HD79 in Richmond is the most liberal (almost 89 percent Democrat). See how your district ranks! For political junkies, this chart is gold.

4.) National Democratic groups, fresh off their drubbing in the recent federal elections, are investing heavily in the open Virginia races in State Senate District 32 and House District 26. Meanwhile, a brouhaha has boiled over on the Republican side between Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Rich Anderson and Loudoun County Republican Leader Scott Pio over Republican investment (or lack thereof) in those races. Fair fight to have, but best done privately.

5.) New Thomas Jefferson Institute Research Fellow, Joshua Devamithran challenged the benefits of Virginia's annual vehicle inspection program, noting that studies show states without such inspections do not show any increase in crashes -- and one (Nebraska) actually experienced a decline in accidents when they ended their inspection mandate. Governor Northam attempted to end inspections, but failed. It is time to end this burdensome regulation in Virginia!

6.) I testified this week before the State Board of Education (you can view it here, at 1:56:14) on the State's new school accountability framework. I urged the Board to not delay in its implementation of the new standards as many of the larger school systems are requesting. Sadly, the school districts object to the fact that the new framework shows vast variations in performance by race and economic status. Todd Truitt, an Arlington Democrat and lawyer (he testified just before me in the same video) explained why it is important that we not hide from, or ignore, this disparity. More importantly, Truitt spells out the magnitude of Virginia's history in failing to educate African-American students compared to other states based on NAEP scores. Everyone should read Mr. Truitt's damning article in yesterday's Bacon's Rebellion! Fortunately, the Board voted not to delay the implementation as Todd and I urged in our testimonies. Kudos to Governor Youngkin and Secretary Guidera for pushing for transparency and accountability, and to the Virginia Board of Education for doing the right thing.

7.) The U.S. Department of Education, on the heels of Governor Youngkin's Executive Order banning cell phones, has urged all states to come up with cell phone use policies. Our Governor Youngkin led the way!

8.) "Green extremism" is about to hit our schools as Virginia is set to approve new environmental science standards that are being called the "most progressive" in the country. Virginia's standards will include lessons on environmental justice. This deserves a closer look.

9.) With President-elect Trump pushing tariffs, particularly against Canada and Mexico, Virginia's two Senators are rightly warning that this would raise costs, and harm families, especially here in Virginia as I have written. Of course, as Dwayne Yancey at Cardinal News hilariously points out in a good history lesson, had we invaded Canada as Thomas Jefferson had urged, or taken more of Mexico, as Polk had proposed we wouldn't need a trade agreement with these two neighbors, as they would be us. Yancey is well worth a follow!

10.) As state legislators are considering new ways to overcome opposition to new solar projects, Cardinal News points out how legislators pushing solar energy have little, if any, solar projects in their districts. Interesting…another great insight from Yancey!

11.) Regional officials met this week to push for a dedicated regional tax for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA or Metro). This would make a mostly unaccountable, financially troubled WMATA even less accountable. No dedicated revenue source should be considered until their finances are in order. As former Congressman Frank Wolf and I wrote in the Washington Times -- appoint an empowered CFO before any new revenue is considered!

12.) From shrinking tax revenue, to a shuttered fire department due to growing controversies with its members, and a 40-year Mayor under federal indictment -- the small town of Glen Lyn in Giles County is on the brink of disbanding. Cardinal News covers the sad developments.

13.) A little President George W. Bush humor that gives average students like me hope...enjoy!

Orthomolecular News: A Paradigm Shift in Epidemic and Chronic Disease Management

Richard Z. Cheng, M.D., Ph.D.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic and the American (and global) chronic disease epidemic have exposed critical failures in the current medical system, particularly within institutions like the FDA, CDC, and NIH. Their reliance on outdated approval processes and pharmaceutical-centric approaches has hindered innovation and neglected safe, accessible, and potentially effective treatments. This paper highlights the shortcomings in addressing epidemics and chronic diseases, emphasizing the need for a Toolkit Approach—prioritizing therapies that are safe, effective (or plausibly effective), affordable, and available. A paradigm shift is proposed to foster integrative and inclusive healthcare strategies that address root causes and unmet medical needs.

Introduction

The dual crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and the chronic disease epidemic have revealed the limitations of modern medicine's ability to respond effectively. Despite advancements, many diseases remain without satisfactory treatments, and the institutions responsible for public health, such as the FDA, CDC, and NIH, have failed to adapt to emerging challenges. This failure stems from rigid regulatory frameworks, an overreliance on pharmaceutical interventions, and a lack of support for integrative approaches such as orthomolecular medicine.

This paper summarizes these failures and proposes a new, inclusive healthcare model built on the Toolkit Approach. By emphasizing safe, accessible, and effective solutions, this model addresses gaps in epidemic and chronic disease management while promoting patient-centered care.

Failures of the Current Medical System

1. Epidemic/Pandemic Management Failures

  • Slow Response During COVID-19: The FDA and CDC failed to approve or promote promising therapies such as high-dose Vitamin C (HDVC), despite its safety, affordability, and preliminary evidence of efficacy. Instead, they focused solely on vaccines, leaving populations vulnerable for months to years.
  • Outdated Regulatory Frameworks: The insistence on lengthy approval processes delayed the adoption of safe and potentially effective treatments during a global emergency.
  • Neglect of Integrative Therapies: Nutritional and lifestyle-based interventions, which could bolster immune resilience, were largely ignored despite their potential to reduce morbidity and mortality.

2. Chronic Disease Management Failures

  • Pharmaceutical-Centric Approach: Chronic disease management has focused on symptom suppression rather than addressing root causes like oxidative stress, inflammation, and nutritional deficiencies.
  • Underutilization of Preventative Strategies: Institutions have failed to prioritize preventative measures, such as promoting nutrient optimization and lifestyle modifications, which could mitigate the rising burden of chronic diseases.
  • Economic Barriers: The prioritization of high-cost pharmaceutical treatments has sidelined affordable and accessible options like nutritional therapies.

The Toolkit Approach

The Toolkit Approach offers a flexible and patient-centered framework for addressing chronic diseases and epidemics. It prioritizes therapies based on three critical criteria:

1. Safety

  • Treatments must demonstrate a strong safety record to minimize patient risk.
  • High-dose Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, and other nutrient-based interventions have decades of clinical use with minimal adverse effects.

2. Effectiveness or Probable Effectiveness

  • Therapies should have demonstrated efficacy or plausible potential through clinical, observational, or historical data.
  • Even without large-scale trials, preliminary evidence and historical use justify compassionate application during emergencies or for diseases without satisfactory treatments.

3. Affordability and Availability

  • Interventions must be economically viable and scalable for widespread use.
  • Nutritional therapies and integrative approaches are cost-effective alternatives to expensive pharmaceuticals, ensuring equitable access.

Key Points from the Toolkit Approach in Action

1. High-Dose Vitamin C (HDVC)

  • Proven to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, HDVC has shown efficacy in managing severe viral infections and improving outcomes in ICU patients.
  • Despite its potential, HDVC was sidelined during the COVID-19 pandemic due to regulatory inertia.

2. Nutritional Interventions

  • Supplementation with Vitamin D3, zinc, and magnesium strengthens immune function and addresses deficiencies linked to chronic diseases.

3. Detoxification Protocols

  • Removing environmental toxins and heavy metals mitigates their role in disease progression.

4. Preventative Care

  • Prioritizing lifestyle changes, such as reducing sugar intake and promoting physical activity, can prevent the onset of chronic diseases.

Proposed Paradigm Shift

To overcome the failures of the current medical system, we propose a paradigm shift that emphasizes inclusivity, flexibility, and patient empowerment:

1. Reform the FDA and CDC

  • Streamline approval processes for treatments with strong safety profiles, enabling timely access during public health emergencies.
  • Broaden the scope of accepted interventions to include integrative and orthomolecular therapies.

2. Expand the Toolkit Approach

  • Encourage the use of therapies that meet the criteria of safety, effectiveness, affordability, and availability.
  • Promote research and innovation in integrative medicine to complement conventional treatments.

3. Shift Focus to Prevention and Root Causes

  • Address underlying mechanisms like oxidative stress, inflammation, and immune dysfunction through holistic approaches.
  • Invest in public health initiatives that prioritize nutrition, exercise, and detoxification.

Conclusion

The failures of the FDA, CDC, and NIH in managing both epidemics and chronic diseases highlight the need for a transformative approach. The Toolkit Approach offers a pragmatic, adaptable framework for healthcare, focusing on safe, effective, affordable, and accessible solutions. By adopting this paradigm shift, we can bridge the gaps in chronic disease management and epidemic control, fostering a more inclusive and patient-centered healthcare system that prioritizes prevention and holistic well-being.
