Financial Catastrophe for the United States

The passage of the Health Care Bill continues to dig the American public deeper into a financial hole. No matter how it is characterized, this is a vast new entitlement program, with no limits on the cost to the taxpayers of the future. Today our economic system is breaking under the weight of Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, the entitlement society. The national debt and deficits show that we cannot go on with this welfare state. This new health bill “doubles down” on the financial problems that we must solve to restore the future of our nation.

According to the official budget document of the U.S., the 2010 national debt is 94% of our Gross Domestic Product(GDP), being all the economic activity of the American society combined. By 2020, the debt will be equal to 107% of our GDP. All these estimates were before the passage of the health care bill. The nation of Greece is today in crisis at 113%, and their sovereign debt is in jeopardy. The sovereign debt of the U.S. is headed for similar levels. We simply cannot sustain the level of spending that requires this kind of borrowing to make ends meet. The new health care bill doesn’t help us control spending, instead, it balloons spending beyond the alarming debt levels we already have and see coming in the future.

The Democratic leadership in the U.S. House and Senate make it clear that the passage of the health bill is not the end of their push to nationalize the costs of health care. One Democratic Senator said this is only “the beginning of a process”, whereby future efforts will be made to enact a “public option” later. One supporter of the health care initiative stated on National Public Radio, “I like capitalism, but this is about human needs”. This mirrors an ignorance of the reality that only the free market has any hope of providing quality health care at costs controlled through competition.

Finally, to enact their ideological program, bi-partisanship was thrown overboard. Bi-partisanship was great when the Republicans were expected to support their agenda, but completely abandoned when conservatives had a different approach to health care reform. As President Obama said, “This is what change looks like.” This kind of change takes us backward, away from the fiscal conservatism that will be essential to restoring our financial health in the future.

In his opinion column in Tuesday’s Washington Post, George Will decried the desire of the Democratic Party to create a dependency society. He states that the Democrats believe that all entitlements are forever. Except that they aren’t. We simply won’t be able to finance these levels of government benefits. The only way out for our country is to control spending, and to build up the American economy, to create jobs, and to draw on the national character of the American people to create wealth and to take care of themselves as much as possible. Now is the time to begin a new process, toward the “Independent Society”. In fact, there is no choice. A more “Independent Society” is our only way out of this culture that is bankrupting our country.

The Post's May 31 endorsement of Jody Wagner in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor stated that she "helped extricate Virginia from the risky fiscal policies of former governor Jim Gilmore." This deserves a response.

As governor, I did not exercise "risky fiscal policies." My administration created nearly 200,000 jobs, enhanced the technology industry and began rebuilding the Wilson Bridge and Springfield Interchange. We added 4,000 teachers and dramatically increased the budget of George Mason University. We put $1 billion into the rainy-day fund and delivered the car tax cut.

Compare that record with the performance of Govs. Mark R. Warner and Timothy M. Kaine and former Finance Secretary Wagner. In 2002, Mr. Warner and Ms. Wagner declared a $6 billion shortfall that independent journalists say never existed. Mr. Warner and Ms. Wagner later underestimated revenue and forced a $1.4 billion tax increase. Two months after this tax increase passed, they discovered no deficit but a $1.1 billion surplus. In 2007, Ms. Wagner reported a shortfall of $200 million to $400 million in the state budget. She had overestimated revenue. In 2008, revenue was overstated by $1 billion to justify more spending.

The biennial budget has ballooned from $51 billion in 2002 to $77 billion today. In October 2008, Business Week magazine listed Virginia as one of "twenty states that can't pay for themselves." In December, the Kaine administration projected a $2.9 billion shortfall, which became a $3.7 billion shortfall. This is the fiscal mismanagement the Post endorsement recommends.

In contrast, my administration delivered a car tax cut, with bipartisan support, that has helped millions of Virginians. But this tax cut has been a burr under the saddle of liberals for 11 years.

It's time for liberals to put up or shut up. Why don't they just reimpose the car tax if they truly believe it was "risky fiscal policy"?

Their “New Socialism” doesn't need to capture property. It is content to control the economy through taxation and regulation and the attitudes of our citizens by the establishment of a culture through the power institutions of our society: the media, the education establishment, and powerful business interests. On Feb. 8, the Star-Exponent published a by James Clements extolling the fact that after four years of ineffective governance, Gov. Tim Kaine had finally found his legacy: banning smoking in restaurants and bars. This is pretty thin gruel for a four-year governor's administration (“Smoking ban will be Kaine's legacy and help preseve our health”).

In the column, Clements also expressed appreciation for Gov. Mark Warner's “four years streamlining government.” I will leave to the reader whether rocketing Virginia's budget from $52 billion when I left office to $76 billion, funded by tax increases, is “streamlining.”

The current headlines show that the unrestrained growth of Virginia's government spending during the Warner years was not sustainable during the Kaine downturn.

But Clements' article also took a little shot at my governorship, saying, “Jim Gilmore did much in his four years in office to show Warner that sometimes it is better if they don't remember you after you leave.”

I care what the readers in the Culpeper area think of me, especially with my family's Madison County roots. So I want to state here that I hope the people of Culpeper do remember my gover-norship.

Editorial Response: America's Challenges Transcend Party Politics

On Jan. 12, The News & Advance published an editorial expressing skepticism as to whether it was such a good idea for Gov. Tim Kaine to become the chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

The editor could not help tossing a few rocks at me, since I was likewise appointed chairman of the Republican National Committee in my last year as governor. Since I care about the opinion held of me by readers of The News & Advance, I want to respond to the negative comments about me and suggest where our focus really should be.

In 2001, the year I was national chairman, I always put Virginia and the governorship first. To the extent I fought with Republicans or Democrats in that year, it was a fight on behalf of the taxpayers, to balance the budget and deliver on the promised car tax cut. But for that fight, your readers and all Virginians would be paying much higher car taxes right now. I certainly didn't ignore the recession in 2001, and I used my authority as governor to balance the budget when the State Senate adjourned without warning and without passing budget amendments. In 2001, I also handled the crisis of Sept. 11, and I left a balanced budget while delivering on the car tax cut.

But this is very old news. Since those days in the governor's office, I have run for the U.S. Senate. While I was not successful, I came away with a sense of the great crisis that faces our commonwealth and our nation.

Between 1999 and 2003 I served as chairman of the Federal Commission on Terrorism, and I developed an expertise that was helpful in my response to the attack on Virginia at the Pentagon on Sept. 11. In light of the events in Gaza, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia and other hotspots, I believe the danger to America is greater than ever. The safety of the U.S. will require strength and possibly more sacrifice to make us safe, not naiveté and generalities.

The current financial crisis has been painful, and we are all trying to find the right answer. As we work through this difficulty, however, someone has to remember the taxpayer. All this bailout money is money taxed from ordinary citizens trying to make their way and support their families. If the bailout results in losses, the big spenders in Washington will be back asking the taxpayer to foot the bill through even higher taxes in the name of "fiscal responsibility."

The AFL-CIO and other unions are determined to radically change the course of American industrial relations by its "card check" bill to deny employees the right to a secret ballot election in union organization. With this government in place in Washington, it's time for a genuine assessment as to whether we want to maintain our right to work laws, or not.

The radical environmentalists seem determined to alter our quality of life and perhaps our liberties in the name of "global warming." A "cap and trade" system to limit carbon emissions may have the effect of nationalizing for the first time the right to conduct industrial activity. Permission may be necessary from government to engage in business, maybe even permission from authorities beyond our borders.

The biggest issue of all may be energy policy, affecting our domestic economy and our national security. We seem determined to launch into inefficient and experimental programs instead of urgently and decisively developing our domestic oil and other energy resources. While I support the development of alternative energy, high oil prices are coming back and we cannot wait to develop our oil fields offshore and in Alaska.

These, among others, are the issues of the day, not whether I, eight years ago, or Tim Kaine today should accept the chairmanship of a national political party. I am confident and optimistic that the people of Virginia and the nation will adopt good approaches that enhance liberty and our quality of life.

I intend to form a political action committee to address these crucial issues, and I hope many reading this op/ed commentary will join me.

The elections are over, and I do not seek another candidacy. But I do intend to add my voice to these debates as we all face the extraordinary challenges ahead.

I have known Jim Gilmore since he was age 17. I know him as the kind of leader people can count on to do the right thing. And, I know him as someone who will always put the interest of Virginia’s taxpayers first.

You may know Jim Gilmore was the son of a supermarket meat cutter and his mother was a church secretary. Because of the values instilled in him by his working parents, Jim Gilmore has become a champion of Virginia’s working families.

As Attorney General, he led successful investigations of Medicaid fraud and government waste and fought for greater consumer protection. He also was a leader in a successful national effort to stop church burnings at African American churches.

As Governor of Virginia, he kept his promise to cut taxes on working families by $1.5 billion. He also created over 250,000 jobs, led Virginia into the technology age, and dramatically boosted planning and construction for Virginia transportation projects.

Jim Gilmore is a public servant who keeps his word and fights for you. Time and again, Jim Gilmore has stood his ground against those who felt the only answer to every problem was to take more money from the taxpayers. And, he does that today in his campaign for the U.S. Senate....

Gilmore Campaign Demands Warner Apologize for the Remarks and for Lying About Them
Alexandria - The Jim Gilmore for Senate Campaign released a statement today after Mark Warner admitted this weekend that he made disparaging remarks about people of Christian faith, pro-lifers, home schoolers and NRA members -- calling them "threatening" to "what it means to be an American":

"After repeatedly denying for years that he made these intolerant statements, Mark Warner this weekend finally owned up to the hurtful remarks after an audio recording of him making these demeaning comments was made public, " said Ana Gamonal, the Gilmore Campaign Communications Director.

"What is even sadder than his admitting that he had lied, after of years of denial, is the best Mark Warner could offer was that his comments were perhaps "over the top" and that he had "learned a lot" since then, with no offer of an apology to the people he attacked by inferring they were un-American," Gamonal said.[1]

One, for making these statements in the first place; Second, for repeatedly "angrily" denying he did so and calling those who were confronting him on it, "disrespectful", when in fact he was the one being disrespectful.[2]And third, for his lack of sincerity throughout this entire Senate campaign, where he has attempted to paint himself as a "centrist", while at the same time attesting to the sentiments expressed in these statements, by affirming he would not support Supreme Court justices like of Justice Scalia or Justice Thomas, calling them "out of the mainstream," Gamonal declared.[3]

No wonder Mark Warner likes taking money from Wall Street fat cats. They have a lot in common besides the big bucks. It's been said that if Warner had made his dough on Wall Street the way he made it through his government connections, he would have been charged by the SEC with insider trading.

Alexandria – Former Gov. Jim Gilmore, candidate for the Virginia U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. John Warner, said today in a debate with Mark Warner on statewide television the choice for Virginia voters in the November 4th election is clear -- a U.S. Senator like Jim Gilmore who will fight for taxpayers and oppose federal government bailouts or a U.S. Senator like Mark Warner who will sell out the taxpayers for the high rollers on Wall Street.

“I am strongly opposed to asking America’s hard working families to cover the bets of the Wall Street high rollers and insiders who exploited flaws in government regulations to make personal fortunes and devastate our economy,” said Gilmore.

Throughout the debate Gilmore repeatedly pointed out how as a U.S. Senator he will stand up for regular Virginians who are struggling and how Mark Warner will instead protect the special interests on Wall Street, rather than the taxpayers.

“Requiring taxpayers to cough up $700 billion without providing them any additional assurances for their own financial security is wrong,” Gilmore added.

“Maybe Mark Warner finds it easy to take more and more of the taxpayers’ money, but I do not,” Gilmore said. “We must restore accountability in Washington – and on Wall Street – so America’s taxpayers are protected and our economy prospers.”

This third Virginia U.S. Senate debate between former Gov. Jim Gilmore and Mark Warner took place in Roanoke, Virginia. Sponsored by NBC affiliate WSLS Channel 10, the debate was held at the Taubman Museum of Art in downtown Roanoke and was moderated by WSLS news anchor and political reporter Jay Warren. The debate was broadcast live on television stations statewide.

The AFL-CIO has said that electing Mark Warner is their “major goal for the 2008 elections” and one of the reasons is Mark Warner’s support for this pro-union bill – also known as the Union Check Card legislation – which would undercut Virginia’s historic Right to Work Law and dramatically increase union activity in our state.

In addition to threatening Virginia’s Right to Work Law, I am convinced the Union Check Card poses a strong threat to Virginia’s small business and industries. The vast majority of union petitions filed and elections held in Virginia involve companies employing fewer than 100 people. Small businesses simply do not have the resources to contest organizing efforts and will be under the gun in their efforts to oppose this kind of union power grab.

Under Union Card Check, workers would no longer have the right to a secret ballot election so union organizers would be free to target workers with harassment and intimidation. All militant union organizers would need to do is gather signed so-called “union authorization cards” from a simple majority of workers. And union organizers would know which workers have signed cards and which ones haven’t, so independent-minded workers who dare to question the “benefits” of this increased union power would pay a severe price.

In addition to indicating his support for increased union power at the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, Mark Warner was recently caught on videotape telling union officials that he would support the Union Check Card legislation sponsored by Ted Kennedy. Senator Kennedy openly acknowledges this legislation is designed to make it easier for union officials to establish themselves as the “exclusive” bargaining agents of employees, including union members and non-members alike, in currently nonunion workplaces in every state in the union, including Virginia.

Economic development specialists have noted time and again that Right to Work states like Virginia, where a relatively small share of employees are subject to “exclusive” union bargaining, enjoy a huge competitive advantage over non-Right to Work states where a higher share of workers are unionized. Low-union-density states like Virginia enjoy far faster growth in jobs, incomes, and opportunity for their working families.

As a former governor, Mark Warner knows that fact. But to obtain the support of the big labor unions, Mark Warner has now promised to work with Ted Kennedy and Barack Obama to undermine Virginia’s competitive advantage. And of course, the entire national economy would be seriously damaged by enactment of the Union Check Card bill.

FIRST SENATE CAMPAIGN TV AD TITLED “PRINCIPLED”
Alexandria – The Jim Gilmore for Senate Campaign and the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV)... announced the release of the first Republican U.S. Senate campaign TV ad in Virginia. Paid for by the RPV and authorized by Jim Gilmore, the ad began airing this past weekend throughout Virginia.

The 30-second ad, which is titled “Principled” reminds voters of former Gov. Jim Gilmore’s record of honesty and trustworthiness, while comparing Mark Warner to his Party’s Presidential nominee Barack Obama, both of whom are campaigning jointly on raising taxes, bigger government spending and limited domestic oil production -- all policies which will further worsen the ongoing financial hardship on Virginia’s working families.

“I am looking forward to campaigning throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia with the McCain-Palin ticket, which favors, as I do, keeping taxes low, eliminating wasteful government spending and increasing America’s domestic oil production through drilling. Having just returned from an electrifying Republican Convention, we expect to keep the momentum going all the way through election day”, said Gilmore.

"This ad is a clear reminder to the voters of Virginia that Mark Warner doesn't know how to keep his promises, and the more people learn about Warner, the more they don't like what they hear," said Frederick. The third installation of the Working Families Tour built on the success of the previous two, starting in Petersburg and finishing in Gloucester. Along the way, we also stopped in Colonial Heights, Chesterfield, Henrico, Caroline, Fredericksburg, King George, Montross, Tappahannock, Kilmarnock. A Very Bad Week For Mark Warner: Mile High Edition

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer wows the Democratic Convention with some 70's dance moves (which is, ironically, the same decade their energy policies seem to be stuck in).

First off, Mark Warner's much-hyped keynote speech at the DNC turned out to be the warmup act for this man, Gov. Brian Schweitzer. Next week we hear he'll be opening up for the Elvis Presley Experience at the Eldorado in Reno.

And despite all of the noise about this guaranteed-to-be-historic speech, it turned out to be a flop!
