RICHMOND - Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins today noted the inconsistency inherent in the candidacy of Democrat Creigh Deeds, who at once insists on speaking only about Virginia-centric issues and then travels across the Potomac River to bow to the demands of the big labor bosses who are funding his campaign. Just two days after protesting against pressure to reveal his stances on federal legislation that would harm Virginia's economy, Deeds wrapped his arms around the national agenda of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations at a reception in Washington, DC. This is a clear indication that the entire Democrat ticket is deep in the pocket of big labor as union leaders begin their push to spread their plans across the entire country.
Deeds: It's All About Virginia!
At the first campaign debate Saturday, Republican Bob McDonnell continuously asked Deeds to disclose his positions on key federal legislation that would kill jobs and stifle economic growth in Virginia. Deeds would only meekly reply, "Let's talk a little more about Virginia, and let's frankly, instead of focusing on what's going on in the halls of Congress, let's talk about what's going on around the breakfast table of South Hill, and Martinsville, or Big Stone Gap."
Big Labor: No Way - We're Going National!
Barely forty-eight hours after pleading to avoid federal issues that will impact Virginia families, Deeds appeared as the guest of honor at a Monday evening reception hosted by the AFL-CIO in Washington. "During his 18 years in the Virginia House of Delegates and in the state Senate, gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds has ‘been with us every step of the way,'" said Jim Leaman, president of the Virginia AFL-CIO. The union helpfully highlighted Deeds' record of supporting big labor's agenda 93.7 percent of the time.
Directly contradicting Deeds' claim to the contrary, the union leaders cast this year's Virginia elections in strict terms of national importance to liberal interests: "With only two states, Virginia and New Jersey, holding gubernatorial elections this fall, Virginia voters are ‘setting the stage' for the 2010 congressional elections," said John Sweeney, AFL-CIO national president.
Dem Ticket: Show Me the Money!
Deeds and his Democratic statewide ticket mates have raked in campaign cash from big labor interests in order to fuel their runs for office. Deeds has received at least $1.1 million dollars from major unions AFSCME ($500k) and SEIU ($100k), also including sizeable donations from the Democratic Governors Association - a major recipient of national labor money.
Democratic candidate for attorney general Steve Shannon has grabbed more than $30,000 from labor interests. Shannon has a 100-percent voting record on AFL-CIO issues.
Candidate for lieutenant governor Jody Wagner has picked up $20,000 in big labor money. Wagner has no legislative experience to rate.
"Creigh Deeds is the first stop on the big labor express that is threatening to travel all across America. This explains very clearly why Creigh Deeds and his ticket mates have taken the extreme positions they have assumed - in favor of the demands of big labor bosses and against the interests of Virginians who need more well-paying jobs in these tough economic times," Chairman Mullins said. "We now know why he's in favor of the job-killer Card Check, even though it will stifle job growth. He's for it because big labor is for it."

During Saturday's debate hosted by the Virginia Bar Association, Deeds telegraphed his approval of Card Check legislation, which will hamstring employers, increase the cost of doing business, strangle job creation and expose workers to the strong arm of big labor union bosses. "It's not going to do anything to impugn Virginia's integrity as a business-friendly state," Deeds said in the debate.
The day after Deeds attended the AFL-CIO soirée, the radical liberal group 21st Century Democrats endorsed Deeds by press release, prompting Deeds to gush, "I respect their commitment to grassroots politics and admire their long record of electing progressives across the country." Candidates generally do not receive the endorsements of organizations without completing candidate questionnaires.
Question number five on the 21st Century Democrats candidate questionnaire reads, in part, "Do you support the Employee Free Choice Act?"
Deeds - Walk Hilton Picket Lines - Check!
In January, just a few weeks before Tim Kaine proudly announced the movement of Hilton executives to Fairfax County, Deeds and his ticket mate Jody Wagner took part in a big labor picket line at the Hilton Hotel in Crystal City in Arlington County. Deeds handed out coffee and popcorn to the people picketing a well-established employer.
"Check out, not in," chanted the picketers.
Deeds: Supporting Big Labor's Agenda - Check!
"Look, it's plain on its face that Creigh Deeds will do the bidding of the big labor bosses who are funding his campaign," Chairman Mullins said. "Chief on their agenda is the job-killing Card Check bill, and then after that they're coming for our right-to-work law. Deeds said himself that they would have an ally in Richmond if he's elected governor. I think we all know what that would mean for job creation and the economy - bad news."
