Press Conference Deception
In my 40 years here in Washington, D.C., I have witnessed dozens of presidential news conferences televised on primetime national television. I have even personally helped brief presidents for such conferences. Not until last night however had I ever seen a president lie and attempt to deceive the American people regarding health care as much as Barack Obama did. Here are some of the statements Obama made, followed by the facts.
Obama said, “This is not just about the 47 million Americans who have no health insurance.”
Fact: That number is bogus. Most experts estimate the number is between 20-25 million, and even then a significant portion of that total is illegal immigrants. Are the American people now responsible for the health care of people who entered the country illegally? You won’t hear Obama mention the number of illegals that we would have to pay for under his health care plan, because he knows how furious the American people would be.
Obama claimed that government would stay out of health care decisions in an overhauled system, but this doesn’t align with proposals coming out of Congress.
Fact: Federal authority would grow under any of the proposals being discussed in the House and Senate.
Obama said, “It will keep government out of health care decisions, giving you the option to keep your insurance if you’re happy with it.”
Fact: The current House legislation states that a committee chosen by the government would have the right to decide what is and isn’t covered by insurance plans in a new purchasing pool, and, yes, one of those options would be a government insured program. In addition, a provision in the plan says that these same standards could be enforced on ALL private insurance plans, not just the ones in the initial “pool.” Finally, no new individual insurance policy could be written after Obama’s plan becomes law. Barack Obama is an intelligent man. I’d be willing to bet he knew these facts before he spoke to the country last night. Despite this, he still refused to tell the truth regarding his socialized health care plan. It seems his personal political gain is more important to him than the well-being of the American people.
