You may have heard of Shona Holmes, a Canadian woman who almost went blind waiting for brain surgery in that country's nationalized health system.
Ms. Holmes was diagnosed with a brain tumor in Canada but was told she would have to wait 4-6 months in order to see a specialist. She was fortunate enough to be able to travel to Minnesota's Mayo Clinic, where private practitioners were able to more accurately diagnose her tumor within a week and eventually saved her sight.
