Governor Signs Obenshain Legislation Enhancing Penalties for Violent Sexual Crimes Against Minors Under 13

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Today, Senator Mark Obenshain stood with Governor Bob McDonnell, other legislators, and law enforcement professionals for the ceremonial signing of legislation aimed at preventing the sexual exploitation of children, including Obenshain's SB 436, which enhances penalties for egregious sexual offenses against minors under the age of 13.

"Some crimes are so heinous that society simply cannot tolerate them, and those who violate a young child deserve nothing less than life imprisonment for their crime," said Obenshain. "Therefore, I am proud that Virginia has adopted this no-nonsense approach, ensuring that those who commit the most heinous of crimes never have the opportunity to endanger others again."

Senate Bill 436 regards as rape any sexual intercourse with a minor under the age of 13 and increases to life imprisonment the mandatory minimum sentence for persons convicted of such a crime, except in cases where the offender is himself a minor. The bill is supported by the offices of the Governor and the Attorney General.

The bill passed the Senate 27-13 and the House 81-14, and went into effect July 1.

Senator Obenshain represents the twenty-sixth district in the Virginia Senate. He is a candidate for Attorney General of Virginia.
