The Good Guys Win Twice

The National Rifle Association of America, Institute for Legislative Action has some good news for supporters of the Second Amendment. Cheers to the Virginia General Assembly and jeers to Democrat Governor Tim Kaine.

General Assembly Overrides Veto of Two Pro-Gun Bills!

Thank You for Your Hard Work and Support!

Today, the General Assembly overrode Governor Tim Kaine's (D) veto of two pro-gun bills.

Senate Bill 877 will allow "retired" law enforcement officers to carry concealed in a restaurant that serves alcoholic beverages. Unlike Senate Bill 1035, this bill applies only to retired law enforcement officers. The Senate voted to override the Governor by a vote of 30-10 with the House voting 76-22 to override.

Senate Bill 1528 will allow a safety course required for obtaining a concealed handgun permit, conducted by a state-certified or NRA-certified firearms instructor to be done electronically or online. The Senate voted 28-12 to override with the House concurring 73-23.

Unfortunately, the Senate failed to override the veto of Senate Bill 1035, House Bill 1851, and House Bill 2528.

SB1035 would have permitted a Right-to-Carry permit holder to carry concealed in a restaurant, provided he or she did not consume alcohol. The bill failed to pass by a 24-16 vote.

HB1851 would have exempted active duty military personnel or Virginia National Guardsmen from Virginia's "one-gun-a-month" law on handgun purchases. HB1851, which passed the House in the override session by a vote of 73-26, failed in the Senate by a vote of 26 to 14 (27 votes were needed for an override).

HB2528 would have established that no locality or entity may participate in a gun "buyback" program where individuals are given anything of value or money in exchange for surrendering a firearm to the locality unless the governing body first passes an ordinance authorizing the gun "buyback." The legislation also required that any locality holding gun "buybacks" sell the firearms to a federally licensed dealer "or be disposed of in any appropriate manner" if they could not be sold. HB2528 passed the House 71-28 only to be defeated in the Senate by a vote of 24-16.

Thank you to all of the NRA members who answered the call to action in support of these bills. Without you, the passage of SB877 and SB1528 would not have been possible.

Please contact Governor Kaine TODAY and respectfully voice your disapproval with his vetoes. Let the Governor know that you do not appreciate him undermining the rights of Virginia's law-abiding gun owners. The Governor can be reached by phone at (804) 786-2211, by fax at (804) 371-6351, or email ima@governor.virginia.gov.

Quote of the Day

The National Day of Prayer, May 7

"More people in unemployment lines. More of our troops going to Afghanistan. More unrest in Pakistan, more uncertainty in Iraq. More of a desperate need for revival - and for God's supernatural move - in our country.

Indeed, we have more to pray about than ever before as we think about the United States of America. But that just means more of our prayers are needed."

John Lind

Obama Throws America Under the Bus

Gary Bauer, Campaign for Working Families, describes how Obama has betrayed America in his ego-centric quest to the Community Organizer of the World. After Obama's display of servility to his Muslim master, it is safe to say that he is not a Christian President. It's also safe to say that he didn't learn much grade school American history when he was a pupil in Indonesia, or at Harvard either, for that matter.

America’s Muslim Heritage?

President Obama is wrapping up his eight-day European tour with a stop in Turkey. A Muslim nation and member of NATO, Turkey is a geographic, economic and cultural bridge between Europe and the Middle East. Speaking in Turkey today, President Obama once again “reached out” to the Muslim world. His speech was broadcast live throughout the Middle East by Al Jazeera and Al Arabiyia. Here is an excerpt:

“Let me say this as clearly as I can. The United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. …America’s relationship with the Muslim world cannot and will not be based on opposition to Al Qaeda. We seek broad engagement based upon mutual interests and mutual respect. …We will convey our deep appreciation for the Islamic faith, which has done so much over so many centuries to shape the world for the better, including my own country. The United States has been enriched by Muslim Americans. Many other Americans have Muslims in their families or have lived in a Muslim-majority country -- I know, because I am one of them.”
There was a lot in his remarks about what America will do and little in the way of the president’s expectations of the Muslim world. The president clearly placed the burden of reform on the United States, not the world’s Islamic states. Does this president have “mutual respect” for regimes that seek a second Holocaust and which persecute religious and other minorities? How many Muslim nations allow women to vote and hold public office?

It’s ludicrous to suggest that our only problem with Islam is Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda is a big problem, but isn’t the only problem. Has the president heard of Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad? Is the president aware of the madrasses and mosques all over the world that preach the jihadist philosophy telling Muslims that their duty to Allah requires them to kill the infidel?

I assume the president is familiar with the 2007 Pew Global Survey of Muslim attitudes, which found significant levels of support of homicide bombings among Muslims throughout the world – 70% in the Palestinian territories (Why create another terrorist state?), 23% in Jordan (a supposedly moderate Muslim nation), 16% in Turkey and 10% in Indonesia (the world’s most populous Muslim nation). The common denominator is radical Islam.

Thankfully, not every Muslim is a terrorist. But virtually every terrorist that the United States has to worry about today is a Muslim. For the president to downplay that is not only irresponsible, it confuses our own citizens and makes it more likely that there will be another 9/11 in our future.

America Not A Christian Nation?

President Obama also told his Muslim audience, “We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values.” That’s odd. For a politician who claims to speak for the “common man” he doesn’t seem to know much about the common man. According to a recent Newsweek poll, 62% of the nation does consider America a Christian nation. I suspect the average viewer watching on Al Jazeera was thoroughly unimpressed by the president’s tolerance as he spoke to a nation that is 99.8% Muslim.

More broadly speaking, America is a Judeo-Christian nation, built upon the values in the Ten Commandments. If you asked Americans, “Do you consider America to be a Judeo-Christian nation,” I believe the percentage of folks agreeing with statement would skyrocket. If you asked, “Is America a Judeo-Christian-Muslim nation,” I suspect the number of affirmative responses would plummet. Because, with all due respect to moderate Muslims, Islam has contributed very little to the history of the United States. The last time I checked, the pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock were Christians, not Muslims. Our Founding Fathers were inspired by the Bible, not the Koran.

And here’s a historical footnote worth remembering: The first time America sent troops into combat overseas was when Thomas Jefferson ordered the Navy and the Marines to Libya to fight the Barbary Pirates. Still in its infancy, America was forced to confront militant Islam.

Our Founding Fathers must be rolling over in their graves. President Obama literally bowed to a Muslim king, downplayed America’s sovereignty and denied its religious and cultural heritage. President Obama’s apologies for America and his attempts to be inoffensive to our Islamofascist enemies should offend millions of Americans.

News by the Numbers - April 2009

  • 0 - When was the last time that you saw a news report giving the latest number of American war dead in Iraq? There haven't been any published in the national news since the election on Nov. 4th! The numbers were never intended to be news, but they were just a club to bash Bush and Republicans by association.

  • 3 years - the amount of time the IRS has in which to conduct an audit on a return or an amended return, according to an AP article.

  • 3 times - Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has delayed access to energy in the United States. In July 2008, then Senator Salazar stated he would not support drilling offshore if gas prices were to reach $10 per gallon, according to The Heritage Foundation.

  • 5% or less - the maximum reduction in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels that a clamp down on future U.S. emissions would produce - a trivial change no matter what you believe about carbon dioxide. Moreover, China and India have vowed not to harm their economies because of global warming -- so their emissions can be expected to soar as they develop and more than make-up for our reductions, according to Steven Milloy, JunkScience.com

  • 5 years - the U.S. could completely end its dependence on OPEC by 2020, if full-scale production of the conservatively estimated 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil, from oil shale in the Green River Formation, were to begin. The Green River Formation is three times greater than the proven oil reserves of Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, according to the U.S. Department of Interior and Bureau of Land Management.

  • 8 islands that are now part of Alaska, the 200-mile exclusive economic zones around them and all the outer continental shelf that goes beyond 200 miles are to be confiscated in a conspiracy between the wealthy Russian thugs who now run Russia and unelected international bureaucrats at the United Nations. The land grab represents hundreds of thousands of square miles of sovereign American territory, containing billions of barrels of American oil, which will be given to Russia if brazen Russian opportunists and U.N. bureaucrats have their way, according to Carl Olson, Chairman of State Department Watch.

  • 25 DVDs given by Obama to the Prime Minister of Britain were not even compatible with European media players

  • 32 miles of the double fencing, of the 700 miles approved by Congress in 2006 has been completed on the border - a pace of just under 11 miles a year, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

  • 41% of Americans say the seriousness of global warming is exaggerated, according to a Gallup poll.

  • 69% of the American people do not have any confidence in the role of government mandated solutions to the economy, according to Kevin McCullough.

  • 78% of the American people believe inflation will come quickly.

  • 80% of the increase in energy demand during the next two decades is expected to come from China, India and the Middle East, according to Richard W. Rahn, senior fellow at the Cato Institute and chairman of the Institute for Global Economic Growth.

  • 82% of the American people say they are worried about the monstrous rise in the national debt.

  • 83% of the American people say they are worried that the steps he has taken to fix the economy will have the opposite effect and make things worse, according to Kevin McCullough.

  • 234-191 - the vote which passed H.R. 1106 in the House of Representatives which would grant bankruptcy judges the unilateral authority to reduce lending rates or to reduce the amount owed to a lender, transferring the burden from those who are not able to meet their mortgage obligations to future homeowners and taxpayers. Congressman Eric Cantor (R-7th District) voted against this bill.

  • 370 kidnappings occurred in Phoenix, Arizona in 2008, spearheaded by Mexican drug cartels, which operate brazenly in the city, according to ABC News.

  • $750 per year - the cost that reducing greenhouse gas emissions would cost the poorest families in America as higher energy prices ripple through the economy affecting all goods and services.

  • 1993 - Congress increased the amount of Social Security benefits subject to taxation from 50% to 85%.

  • $110,332 - AIG’s campaign contributions to Democrat Barack Obama, according to OpenSecrets.org

  • $4 million+ - Obama’s income in 2007

  • $15 million a month will go to unions that support Democrat candidates and the Democrat Party committees in dues payments from the 600,000 new federal government jobs created by the “stimulus bill” passed by the Democrats, according to the National Republican Congressional Committee.

  • $17 billion - the total bailout to General Motors and Chrysler thus far. They have asked to borrow $21.6 billion more. In addition, their financing arms have received $6.5 billion, according to and AP report.

  • $182.5 billion - the total bailout to AIG thus far.

  • $2.435 trillion has been taken (stolen) from our Social Security Trust Fund savings by Congress. They take another $227 billion this year alone, according to the Christian Seniors Association which notes that the liberal AARP denies there is an ongoing raid of the Social Security Trust Fund.

It seems almost daily that the federal government launches yet another massive spending initiative. While it may be lost upon Washington bureaucrats that money for these projects doesn't just materialize from thin air, we Americans who have families, mortgages, car payments, tuition, and other expenses know differently. The money that Congress and the President seem to wield so nonchalantly comes from ourour dreams, and our families. pockets,

In a country such as ours where government, as described by Abraham Lincoln, is "of the people, by the people, for the people," we the people need to stand together to remind our officials not to use our families' hard-earned dollars so recklessly.

UN Commission Ends with Delegates Saying No to Abortion

Austin Ruse, President of C-Fam reports breaking news of an unexpected victory at the UN meeting today.

UN Commission Ends with Delegations Saying No to Abortion

    By Samantha Singson

(NEW YORK – C-FAM) As the sun rose on the last day of negotiations at the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) at the United Nations (UN) today, delegations were still embroiled in a contentious debate over language concerning “sexual and reproductive health and rights,” which some radical NGOs and UN committees have interpreted and used to promote abortion. As UN member states came together at the closing meeting to adopt the document, delegations took the floor to define abortion out of the document.

Up until the eleventh hour, the contentious term “sexual and reproductive health and rights” remained in the draft document. Just prior to adoption, Iran took the floor to object to the phrase which has never before been included in any negotiated UN document. Iran stressed that the term remained problematic for a number of delegations and urged the Commission to revert back to previously agreed upon and carefully negotiated language from the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Program of Action, which is understood not to create any right to abortion.

In an attempt to get consensus, the chairwoman from Mexico suspended the meeting and after twenty minutes, returned to the room and announced that Iran’s proposal would be accepted and that the term “sexual and reproductive health and rights” would be removed from the text. The document was then adopted by consensus.

Several delegations, however, went further and made statements to explicitly define abortion out of the CPD document and to reiterate that the document created no new rights. Comoros, Peru, Poland, Ireland, Chile, the Holy See, Malta, and Saint Lucia spoke out against the other remaining reproductive health-related terms such as “reproductive rights,” “reproductive health services” and “sexual and reproductive health” and emphasized that these could not be construed to “support, endorse or promote” abortion.

Malta’s ambassador stated that his delegation was finding it more difficult in accepting the resolutions of UN bodies like the CPD where there were consistent attempts to expand “reproductive health” to include abortion.

Saint Lucia made an explicit objection to the term “safe abortion” because the term could “give the impression that abortion was a procedure completely free of medical and psychological risks.” Saint Lucia also highlighted a provision in the CPD document which called on states where abortion was legal to “train and equip health service providers and should take such measures to ensure that such abortion is safe and accessible.” The Saint Lucian representative stressed that her delegation understood this provision did not impact the right of healthcare providers to refuse to perform or be complicit in abortions as a matter of conscience, stating, “Again, no new rights are created or acknowledged in this document, and the universal right to conscience can in no way be overridden or weakened.”

Only the representative of Norway expressed regret that the term “sexual and reproductive rights” was not accepted in the text, saying that his country had widespread access to abortion and virtually no negative effects on women.

The CPD will next meet in April 2010.

    Revolution

    Guest Columnist John Callahan

Thomas Jefferson once said (paraphrased) that a little revolution every now and then is good for a country. Also in a Tale of Two Cities Charles Dickens identified the necessity for sacrifice to achieve happiness both at national and a personal level. The current Congress is establishing a regime depicting themselves as the noble men of old, and the rest of the nation as peasants, ignoring the fact it’s the citizens who must suffer and sacrifice to accomplish their goals. Essentially, Congress is practicing taxation without representation, forcing the necessity for that Revolution Thomas Jefferson so eloquently described to come about.

As every day a new “ear mark” is uncovered in the latest 400 billion dollar budget being touted by congress, it becomes crystal clear that the nobles are willing to spend money on just about anything that would insure a continued position in power. Does anyone think frivolous pork spending is a good idea in today’s crumbling economy? When most of the common folks are cutting back on everything from groceries to doctor bills, our congress gives away billions on welfare and health care for illegals while American citizens scratch to survive.

This congress has lost the purpose for their being in office. Somewhere along the way, they forgot that congress was established to protect the American citizens, not line the pockets of the elite or pay for future votes.

Its time now to put all of Congress on notice to either clean up this trillion dollar mess they’re creating or get out of office. If our elected officials are unable to fix this governmental mess, than it’s time to leave office. They can leave on their own, or the people of the great United States can stand up for what they believe in and bring out the “tar and feathers” and escort them out.

Revolutions have developed many times in the past due to officials overstepping positional boundaries, destroying citizens’ liberties and freedoms in the name of progress.

The current Congress is doing the same and it’s time for American citizens to tell Congress to cease their reckless spending and end the give away programs, and go back to basics.

The taxes paid by hard-working citizens should not be wasted in solving problems of other nation’s citizens. Until the United States is out of this faltering economy, Congressmen must devote their time in protection of citizens of this nation and nothing more. No more loans to bankers, insurance companies automobile dealers or playing Santa Claus for non-US entities. Treat these groups the same as you treat the rest of the businesses filing bankruptcy in America.

Congressmen are not nobility, but workers hired by the citizens. And citizens do not expect these hired workers to waste tax dollars on private jets for weekend jaunts either. Congress has elated their positions, forgotten their job and purpose and reasons for their positions. It’s time to fire up the tar pot and pluck the chickens and remind them.

Americans Are Not Going to Stand for Obama's Recklessness

Donald E. Wildmon, Founder and Chairman of the American Family Association recognizes that Obama's obession with overloading America with debt is more than just a financial problem.

Congress and President Obama just don't get it! The new $3.6 trillion budget includes a deficit of $1.2 trillion. One third of the budget is deficit spending, money we don’t have! That is on top of the $12 trillion we already owe.

How much is $1 trillion? Consider this: A million seconds is 11.5 days. A billion seconds is 32 years. A trillion seconds is 32,000 years. We must strongly oppose the move to make ours a socialist country.

This reckless spending is a moral issue. We are passing on to our grandchildren a debt that we created. Every man, woman and child in the country already owes $35,000, and we are piling more debt on them. We are robbing them of their right to enjoy the American Dream.

On April 15, AFA is sponsoring TEA Party rallies in 1,672 cities to send a message to Washington that we want a fiscally responsible government. It is not too late to organize a TEA Party rally. But if you can’t organize a rally, contact the local organizer and ask how you can help. And be sure to attend and take a car load of friends with you to the rally.

    Support Pastor Hoye

While Senate Democrats are trying to ram through Obama's first judicial nominee, David Hamilton, who is notorious for striking Jesus's name from public prayers in the Indiana legislature and later abolishing abortion waiting periods, a pro-life pastor sits in a jail cell for daring to hold a sign.

In Support of Dr. King and Pastor Hoye

While sitting in a Birmingham jail--after being imprisoned on Good Friday in 1963 for breaking the law because it violated his moral conscience--a great man wrote, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." That man was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As we approach Good Friday 2009, another man sits in prison in Oakland, California for standing outside an inner-city abortion facility with a sign reading, "Jesus loves you and your baby. Let us help you." That man is Rev. Walter B. Hoye.

The wrongful jailing of this peace-loving pastor continues to stoke the fires of the pro-life movement. Conservative African-American leaders are hopeful that Oakland's wrongful incarceration of Pastor Hoye will draw attention to the greater abuse of black women and babies by these so-called "family planning" clinics. On day 15 of his 30-day sentence, Hoye now sleeps on a top bunk in a large cell together with dozens of other inmates. On a juice-only fast, he is faithfully sharing the Gospel with fellow prisoners, some of whom have accepted Christ.

We're asking that you take a few moments to write Rev. Hoye a note of encouragement while he serves his time. You can reach him at Walter B. Hoye II, PFN# BGR852, Santa Rita Jail 5325 Broder Boulevard, Dublin, California 94568-3309.

A Budget We Can Believe In

The Heritage Foundation compares the two budgets on the table. (excerpt)

When President Barack Obama unveiled his budget he told the American people: “We need to be honest with ourselves about what costs are being racked up, because that’s how we’ll come to grips with the hard choices that lie ahead. And there are some hard choices that lie ahead.” But then his budget went on to avoid all of those hard choices, instead moving to borrow and spend at historic levels. Yesterday, House Budget Committee ranking member Paul Ryan (R-WI) offered a clear alternative that does make hard choices. Heritage analyst Brian Riedl details what Ryan’s budget does:
    • Freezes non-defense, non-veterans discretionary spending at its current level for five years.
    • Reforms entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid, which are currently growing 8 percent annually.
    • Takes back stimulus spending that would be spent in 2010 and beyond, when the recession is expected to be over.
    • Places a moratorium on earmarks until the system can be cleaned up.

The most ambitious part of Ryan’s budget is the effort to contain the $43 trillion, 75-year unfunded liability in Social Security and Medicare. Specifically, it would slowly transition Medicare into a premium support program for individuals who are currently below age 55. This would provide seniors with a health plan similar to the one that Members of Congress and federal employees currently enjoy—one based on consumer choice and competition. The alternative budget would also allow future adjustments to Social Security benefits for upper-income seniors.

The alternative budget would also go a long way to restoring American competitiveness by making the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent, lowering the corporate tax rate from 35% to 25%, and simplifying the tax code by allowing individuals the choice of opting into a system with a 10% marginal tax rate on all incomes below $100,000 and 25% rate on incomes above $100,000. Even with all these changes, the alternative budget would bring in revenues averaging just below 18% of GDP, which is near the historical average.

The contrast the two budgets create could not be starker. President Obama’s plan saddles Americans with historic tax increases, runaway spending and a doubling of the national debt. Ryan’s alternative reins in spending, simplifies taxes and lessens the debt burden on American families. Which vision do you believe in?

    Quote of the Day

    Republican Response

It’s no secret that Democrats control Capitol Hill, and they are working furiously to ram through as much of Barack Obama’s radical agenda as quickly as they can. This week, Congress is “debating” Obama’s massive $3.6 trillion budget, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will add ten trillion dollars to the national debt. If the budget passes, Obama and the Democrats will take America down the path of European Big Government socialism.

What may not be obvious to many Americans is that Republicans are offering serious alternatives and fighting as hard as they can. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), the ranking Republican on the House Budget Committee, outlined the Republican response to Obama’s budget in today’s Wall Street Journal.

I won’t go into all the number-crunching details here, but the Republican plan is far more fiscally responsible than Obama’s trillions of new debt and deficits and trillions of higher taxes and more spending. If you would like to read more details of the plan, click here. But let me leave you with this closing thought from Rep. Ryan’s op-ed:
“America is not the greatest nation on earth by chance. We earned this greatness by rewarding individual achievement, by advancing and protecting natural rights, and by embracing freedom. We [Republicans] intend to continue this uniquely American tradition.

Obama Desires Crushing Debt for all Americans

Tony Perkins, Family Council Research Action takes note of yet another campaign promise Obama is breaking.

    Read My Teleprompter...No New Taxes

So much for that 95% tax relief for working families! According to ABC News, "President Obama's budget chief hinted ...that the president's signature campaign issue--a middle-class tax cut--will not likely survive a budget battle with Democrats on Capitol Hill."

Quite the contrary, the latest figures show that President Obama's budget would include the largest tax increase in history--$1.5 trillion over the next ten years. Despite the tax hike, Obama's $3.6 trillion budget will still create more debt than was created under every President from George Washington to George Bush combined!

Of particular concern is the way Democrats are scheming to use the reconciliation process as a means of blocking debate. By using congressional rules in an unprecedented way, the Democratic leadership could effectively hide a number of drastic liberal policies, including the cap and trade program, universal health care, and tax hikes in the budget without letting taxpayers and even members of Congress in on the details.

FRC will do its best to let you know what the congressional majority wishes you didn't! Stay tuned for the latest on the budget battle.

The Obama Administration is considering giving the State of California the power to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles. This will increase car and truck prices across the nation. According to the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, these regulations could hike prices by $3,000 per vehicle.

The already-struggling automakers may need to cut back on or eliminate certain models to comply with California’s dictates. Not only will this harm the American auto industry, it will limit your car and truck options.

This quote from a Wall Street Journal article sums up the current assault on the auto industry by unelected federal bureaucrats:
"GM was also told in no uncertain terms that it must learn to make money on smaller cars–not just trucks and sport-utility vehicles."
This regulation would only make matters worse. That is why the Obama Administration needs to hear from you.

Tell the Obama Administration not to force you to pay more for your next car. Tell them not to restrict your freedom to choose the kind of automobile that best suits you and your family's needs. Tell them you know that this regulation will do little, if anything, to help the environment. Tell the Administration that you oppose California’s plan to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles.
