RICHMOND - Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins unveiled a new Internet video that highlights a variety of issues that Republican candidate for governor Bob McDonnell has taken the lead on, and Democrat Creigh Deeds has somewhat slowly followed up on with a meek "me too" approach. The video can be found here.

"On issue after issue, Bob McDonnell is the one candidate out in front with good ideas or innovative approaches," said Mullins. "It seems that Creigh Deeds is lost in the weeds, and sometimes pops his head up and says, ‘Oh, yeah, I agree with that.'"

Whether the issue is a debate schedule, opening rest stops on highways, auditing state agencies for efficiency, overhauling the transportation system or creating jobs and improving the economy, it is obvious that Bob McDonnell acts first, and Creigh Deeds follows up with a weakly stated, and somewhat amorphous, "Me too."

RICHMOND - Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins today noted the obvious irony inherent in Creigh Deeds' fundraising event with President Barack Obama tomorrow, given that Deeds notoriously picketed the very hotel franchise hosting the event. Obama is scheduled to appear with Deeds Thursday evening at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner less than seven months after Deeds joined hotel union workers picketing the Hilton in Crystal City in Arlington.

"This is rich," said Chairman Mullins. "Creigh probably doesn't know if he should grab a sign and start marching up and down the sidewalk or go on inside and start grabbing fat checks from donors. What a quandary."

In January, just a few weeks before Virginia Governor Tim Kaine proudly announced the movement of Hilton executives to Fairfax County, Deeds and his ticket mate Jody Wagner took part in a big labor picket line at the Hilton Hotel in Crystal City in Arlington County. Deeds handed out coffee and popcorn to the people picketing the well-established employer.

"Check out, not in," chanted the picketers.

While Deeds was seeking the Democratic nomination, there was no liberal interest group he failed to attempt to please. Big labor was among the greatest beneficiaries of his boundless affection. His two competitors for the nomination did the same, as seen by this picture.

RICHMOND - Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins today released a new Internet video available here that features Democratic candidate for governor Creigh Deeds telling a supporter that he knows that he will raise taxes, but can't bring himself to say so out loud. Deeds was at a Hillsville restaurant Tuesday and faced a question from his audience about funding solutions for road projects.

"There has to be a nexus between sources of transportation ... the sources of funding and transportation itself," Deeds said, in a desperate attempt to convey his message of higher taxes without speaking the truth out loud. "And, and ... and Suzie, I could talk about them all day long, it doesn't ... you know as well as I do what they are."

The record shows that Deeds knows full well where to find money for his projects. In 2008 alone he voted three times for bills that would raise gasoline taxes, among other hefty levies (Senate Bills 713, 6009, 6010).

"This is the Creigh Deeds that we all know," said Chairman Mullins. "The guy goes looking for money in people's pockets at every chance he gets. So, when he tells you that he needs funding, and that ‘you know as well as I do' where he's going to get it, I think it doesn't take too much to connect the dots there. He'll raise gas taxes, you'd better believe it."

Indeed, the Washington Post endorsed Deeds' candidacy in the Democratic Primary in large part due to his prior support for increasing gasoline taxes, noting that "Mr. Deeds courageously voted for a proposal that included raising the state's gas tax, unchanged since 1986."

Additionally, the Post reported on the front page on July 29, 2009 that, "Although Deeds has not said how he would pay for roads, he has laid out a few conditions for a workable solution, the most notable being that the plan must include a long-term source of funding. Absent a radical solution, such as a major new tolling system or wholesale privatization of state highways, the only likely source of ‘long-term revenue' is new taxes."

"You show me a tax increase that Creigh Deeds doesn't support, and I'll show you a tax increase he hasn't heard of yet," said Mullins. "Step One: get an idea to do something. Step Two: reach into people's checkbooks. That won't fly in Virginia in this economy."

Liberals and the 'Average Life Expectancy' Lie

Tell any pro-ObamaCare Democrat that socialized healthcare doesn't work, and you are sure to receive the smug reply that "countries with a single-payer system have a higher life expectancy." Technically, that's true. But, as the saying goes, there are "lies, damned lies and statistics." The lie in this particular set of stats is indeed not in the stats themselves, but in the inference you are asked to draw from them. You are told, for example, that Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom rate higher in life expectancy than the U.S. because of their public healthcare systems.

You're asked to believe that all this happens in a vaccuum. That the only - or at least largest - factor in life expectancy is the mode and quality of health insurance. But that isn't the case. The Life Expectancy figure is based upon an average of death ages from any cause; and that includes non-medical causes.

But you are asked to ignore other, non-medical causes of death. Causes like violent crime, household accidents, car accidents, etc. These are numbers which should not be ignored in this discussion; if average age of death is seen as important to the issue of healthcare, certainly the circumstances surrounding those deaths, and whether a single-payer system would actually effect those rates, are equally important.

The existence of “fifth columns”- clandestine and subversive jihadists working in every Western nation – is becoming clearer by the day. Yesterday, police from around Australia were secretly moved to Melbourne to launch raids on homes in seven suburbs. Four men were arrested for plotting an attack against Australian military installations. All the men had Somali and Lebanese backgrounds.

The men were apparently plotting to force their way onto bases to commit suicide attacks. Several of the men have traveled to Somalia for weapons training and were sponsored by the terrorist movement al-Shabaab. This is the same terrorist group that is recruiting jihadists in Minneapolis to fight in Africa.

We have learned of terror plots being foiled in our country and other nations around the world. But how many plots have we not uncovered? The threat of Islamofascist terrorism is real, yet our government often sides with political correctness rather than doing what’s necessary to protect the American people.

For example, just outside our nation’s capital in northern Virginia, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted 6-to-4 in favor of a planned expansion of the Saudi-funded Islamic Saudi Academy. This is the same school whose valedictorian was arrested for plotting to assassinate President George W. Bush. Many observers believe its curriculum promotes anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism. Until our government is ready to take the necessary steps to combat Islamofascism here, innocent Americans will continue to be in harm’s way.

Five Questions for Health Care Townhalls

Can you promise me that I will not lose my current plan and doctor?

President Obama says it is “not legitimate” to claim the “public option is somehow a Trojan horse for a single-payer system.” But Reps. Barney Frank (D-MA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman have all admitted that the public option will inevitably lead to government-run health care. The independent and non-partisan Lewin Group estimates that about 83.4 million people would lose their private insurance if Obamacare became law.

Can you promise that you and your family will enroll in the public plan?

Members of Congress and their families currently receive health care through the popular, and completely public-option-free, Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) which allows members of Congress to choose between 283 private health insurance plans. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) proposed an amendment that would require all members of Congress and their staffs to enroll in the newly-created public health insurance plan. His amendment passed by just one vote in the Senate Health Committee. In the House, Rep. Dean Heller (R-NV) offered a similar amendment and all 21 Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee voted it down. If the public plan is so great, then Members of Congress should by willing to forfeit their private coverage and join the millions of Americans who would be moved into the public plan.

Can you promise that Obamacare will not lead to higher deficits in the long-term?

President Obama said that he would not support health care legislation that would add to the national deficit. But Congressional Budget Office director Douglas Elmendorf has stated that the House health care legislation would “generate substantial increases in federal budget deficits during the decade beyond the current 10-year budget window.” To help Obama keep his promise, Rep. Patrick Tiberi (R-OH) offered an amendment that would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to submit an annual report to the President and Congress, comparing the expected revenue and spending under the bill’s provisions for the upcoming 10-year period. In the event that projected spending under the bill outpaced revenue, the Secretary would have to reduce spending so that it would not exceed revenue. Democrats defeated Tiberi’s amendment.

Can you promise that government bureaucrats will not ration health care for patients on the public plan?

President Obama promised on July 22 that health care reform would keep the government out of health care decisions, but both the House and Senate bills call for an increased role of comparative effectiveness research (CER). More information on health care effectiveness is good as long as doctor’s and patients are the ones empowered to use that information. Conservatives in both the House and Senate offered amendments prohibiting the use of CER by government to mandate, deny, or ration care. These anti-rationing amendments were defeated in both the House and Senate.

Can you promise me that my tax dollars will not fund abortions?

The House bill, as currently drafted, allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services to outline the minimum benefits that must be included in any health plan. There is no specific provision in the bill that would require insurance coverage of abortion. However, since the decisions over benefits are left to the Secretary of HHS, with recommendations from a newly created Health Care Benefits Advisory Committee, there is nothing to prevent the current or future Secretary from including abortion coverage in Americans’ health insurance. Conservatives in both the House and Senate offered amendments that would prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions. The tax payer funded abortion bans were defeated in both the House and Senate.

Questions to ask your Senators and Representative about ObamaCare

1. ABORTION
Pro-choice groups, like NARAL and Planned Parenthood, are demanding that abortion be covered in any healthcare reform bill. In a recent interview with Politico, Laurie Rubiner, vice president for public policy and advocacy at Planned Parenthood, defends this demand by saying, "the alternative would be slashing benefits for millions of women who currently have [private] coverage for abortions..." In addition, key administration officials refuse to rule out abortion coverage. When asked on Fox News Sunday whether taxpayer money would go to pay for abortions, White House Budget Director Peter Orszag replied, "I am not prepared to say explicitly that right now. It's obviously a controversial issue, and it's one of the questions that is playing out in this debate."

Pro-life senators on the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee forced a roll call vote on the issue when Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) attempted to add an amendment to the healthcare bill that would, in her words, "include women's health clinics that provide comprehensive services...deemed medically necessary or appropriate." She admitted that such "health clinics" would include Planned Parenthood. The pro-life amendment to prohibit funding of abortion lost 11-to-12.

Question for your Congressmen: Will you oppose any healthcare reform bill that uses my tax dollars to pay for abortions?

2. EUTHANASIA
In a recent New York Post column, Betsy McCaughey, a former lieutenant governor of New York and health care expert, wrote:

"One troubling provision of the House bill compels seniors to submit to a counseling session every five years (and more often if they become sick or go into a nursing home) about alternatives for end-of-life care (House bill, p. 425-430). The sessions cover highly sensitive matters such as whether to receive antibiotics and 'the use of artificially administered nutrition and hydration.' This mandate invites abuse, and seniors could easily be pushed to refuse care."

Question for your Congressmen: Will you oppose any healthcare reform bill that in any way promotes euthanasia?

3. COST
The United States faces a debt crisis. According to many analysts, including Senator Judd Gregg (who is so respected by President Obama that he offered Gregg the post of Secretary of Commerce), the Obama budget will give us $11 trillion of debt at the end of five years and $17 trillion of debt at the end of ten years. Question for your Congressmen: Why is Congress and the president pushing through a healthcare bill that would cost another trillion dollars over the next ten years? Shouldn't we concentrate on getting the debt under control first?

4. RATIONING CARE
According to a July 15th report by The Hill, "The House bill would be paid for by roughly $500 billion in Medicare and Medicaid cuts..." These "cuts" would come as millions of Americans are retiring. Logic suggests that if we are "cutting" hundreds of billions of dollars healthcare would have to be limited or rationed in someway to accommodate more people. And seniors would be most affected by Medicare cuts.

In addition, advisors to President Obama, such as Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, brother of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, have suggested that healthcare should be rationed to certain individuals. Dr. Emanuel once wrote that "services provided to individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens...should not be guaranteed. An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia."

Question for your Congressmen: How can government promise to do more with less? Will you oppose any healthcare reform bill that in any way limits my access to healthcare or medicines recommended by my doctor?

5. MORE BURDENS ON SMALL BUSINESSES
Despite a 9.5% (and rising) unemployment rate, the healthcare bill in the House imposes a new 8% payroll tax on small businesses with payrolls of $400,000 or more that don't provide health insurance for their employees. This is in addition to the current 15% payroll tax. What this means is that any employer with a payroll of $400,000 dollars or higher will have to pay at least 25% above the salary just to hire someone. Common sense tells you that any struggling small business will likely lay off workers to avoid this additional tax. On the other hand, if the tax is cheaper than the cost of health insurance, larger businesses may opt to cancel their health insurance, forcing employees into the government’s "public option," and simply pay the 8% fine. Question for your Congressmen: Why are you imposing additional mandates and taxes on small businesses, which create the overwhelming majority of new jobs, in the middle of a severe recession?

6. QUALITY CARE
American healthcare is better than that in European countries with socialized medicine. The German breast cancer mortality rate is 52% higher than in the United States. Prostate cancer mortality is 604% higher in the United Kingdom and 457% higher in Norway than in the United States. Canadian healthcare lags behind the United States too. Canadian patients wait twice as long to see a specialist for hip surgery or cancer than we do in the United States. Most Americans say they are satisfied with the U.S. health care system, but more than 70% of Germans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders and Britons say that their systems need "fundamental change" or "complete rebuilding." In an editorial on July 26th, the Washington Post criticized President Obama for not "leveling about the consequences of change" when it comes to healthcare costs versus quality. Here's what the Post wrote: "The Congressional Budget Office estimates that new technology accounts for about half the increase in health-care costs over the past several decades. This, for the most part, is a good thing. Adjusted for inflation, health-care spending per person is six times what it was 40 years ago. But no one today would settle for 1960s-style medicine."

Question for your Congressmen: Why are you trying to force us in the direction of more government involvement in healthcare when everywhere government-run healthcare has been tried, quality declines and care is rationed?

7. THE PEOPLE ARE BEING IGNORED
According to a recent poll, just 23% of voters believe healthcare reform legislation will lower costs, while 53% believe it will lead to more expensive care. By a margin of 50% to 23%, voters believe that "reform" legislation will make the quality of care decline. And while voters believe they will get worse care at higher costs, 78% also believe that healthcare reform will result in middle class tax hikes. In addition, a recent Fox News poll found that 91% of those surveyed have health insurance, 84% said that the quality of their health insurance was either excellent or good and 83% said the quality of health care they receive from their private insurance is either good or excellent. And only 12% of those surveyed said reforming health care was the most important issue Congress should be working on right now. Question for your Congressmen: Why are you and the White House rushing this bill through Congress and ignoring the concerns of the American people?

8. LOSS OF FREEDOM
The healthcare reform legislation under consideration in the House will eventually force all Americans into a government-approved plan. After a five-year grace period, every new insurance policy will have to comply with government mandates, and any policy changes – "altering co-pays, deductibles, or even switching coverage for this or that drug" – invalidates your previous coverage and forces you to choose a government "qualified" plan. In addition, the House plan mandates coverage for every individual. If you are self-employed or choose not buy insurance for whatever reason, the bill imposes a "healthcare tax" of 2.5% of your income. Question for your Congressmen: Why do you believe bureaucrats can make better decisions than me about what kind of health insurance I should have? And will you guarantee that any healthcare reform bill passed by Congress will always allow me to choose my own doctor?

9. RACIAL PREFERENCES
Do you care about the race of a doctor who is getting ready to operate on you? Of course not. Most Americans want their doctor to be the best professional available regardless of race or ethnic background. But congressional liberals have a different idea. On page 909 of the House bill, grants to medical schools will be awarded "to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following...training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds." Question for your Congressmen: Why are you throwing affirmative action/racial set asides into a healthcare reform bill?

10. PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS
President Obama has repeatedly said that "no insurance company will be allowed to deny you coverage because of a pre-existing medical condition." That sounds wonderful until you apply common sense, which is in short supply in Washington. What if we made a law that allowed you to buy car insurance after you got into an accident and that required the insurance company to pay for the damage? Wouldn’t many people just wait for an accident before buying insurance? Why wouldn’t many Americans wait until they were sick to buy health insurance?

Question for your Congressmen: Isn't it clear that this provision would drive up the cost of health insurance for everyone?

Cash For Clunkers And Your Health Care

To listen to the Obama Administration, the “Cash for Clunkers” program is the most successful government stimulus effort in history. In fact, it was so “successful” that the government had to suspend the program late last week. Evidently the $1 billion of your tax money appropriated for the program had run out in a matter of days. The House of Representatives immediately swung into action and approved an additional $2 billion Friday afternoon.

I know some folks may think this is a good idea. But the program is a mess, and it offers a clear warning about the proposed government takeover of our healthcare system. Here are a few observations:

• The program has a huge cost overrun. Cash for Clunkers was supposed to cost just one billion dollars of your money to help folks buy new cars. It was scheduled to end in November. But within days it was bankrupt, and the politicians have now tripled the funding to $3 billion. If the government so terribly underestimated the costs of this program, can you image the potential cost overruns of Obama’s socialized healthcare plan? Once again, Democrats have demonstrated a fundamental lesson of economics. If you subsidize something, you will get more of it.
  
  
• The program is bureaucratic and inefficient. I know that may come as a complete surprise, but the program has turned into a nightmare for many dealerships. There are reports of dealers attempting multiple times to process simple online transactions only to have them rejected over and over again. If the government has this much difficulty with a simple rebate program, do you really want it running your healthcare?
  
  
• The poor will get hit by this program. Who buys clunkers? Who spends money on parts and repairs to avoid making big payments on a new car loan? But under this plan, the clunkers that are turned in must be destroyed. That will affect the supply of parts and drive up their costs.
  
  And while it may help a lot of desperate dealers move excess inventory, consider the irony here. We’ve just bailed out the auto industry with tens of billions of taxpayer dollars and now we’re having to give consumers billions more to cajole them into buying the products.
  

Once again, the common sense of the American people eclipses that of Congress. A poll released this weekend found that 54% of Americans oppose the “Cash for Clunkers” concept, while just 35% support it.

Townhall or Townbrawl?

Being home is no picnic for the Democrats in charge, as one blogger makes abundantly clear in a home video taken during a recent townhall meeting on health care. In a packed gymnasium, Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Penn.) and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius were booed so loudly that you can barely hear their answers to some basic questions. The comments that were audible only managed to cause more outrage.

One audience member asked how Americans can be confident in Congress to reform the health care system when members won't even read the legislation. Sebelius's response? "I'm not a member of Congress," which apparently absolves her from understanding the $1 trillion plan her Department will be tasked with implementing. That answer is still better than Sen. Specter's explanation, which was, "...[W]e have to make judgments very fast, and every bill is... understood by me before I vote." Sebelius tried to interrupt the hissing crowd but her defense of Senate Democrats was almost impossible to hear amid the jeering.

Of course, the mainstream press would have us believe through carefully choreographed broadcasts that Americans are perplexed but receptive to the White House plan. Producers have been wary to air anything but footage of the President in a controlled townhall environment, where he answers softball questions from a handpicked crowd. The media may show the grassroots as an agreeable bunch on the President's proposal, but as you'll see from the video on Panzramic, these public forums are turning into a public relations nightmare for the liberals in power.

In "Townhalls gone wild," Politico chronicles another side of the debate that includes "screaming constituents, protestors dragged out by the cops, [and, sad to say] congressmen fearful for their safety." More Democrats are canceling meetings, concerned about "angry, sign-carrying mobs" that greeted a long list of their colleagues including: Reps. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.), Thomas Perriello (D-Va.), Allen Boyd (D-Fla.), Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), and Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.). Bishop, who was escorted away by police after his meeting got out of hand, said, "I have no problem with someone disagreeing with positions I hold. But I also believe no one is served if you can't talk through your differences."

Unfortunately, Americans are talking. The leadership just refuses to listen. Until it does, House and Senate Democrats can expect a long, uncomfortable August where the temperatures outside are nothing compared to the heat they're feeling inside their District offices. FRC has posted a schedule of townhall meetings across the country and sample questions you can ask. Please make a point of going to the forums near you and share--in a respectable manner--your thoughts with your congressman. While you're at it, why not bring your video camera?

Guest-hosting for Keith Olbermann on MSNBC’s Countdown program Friday, Richard Wolffe disparaged the ”angry protesters” who have turned up at recent town-hall meetings where Democrats have sought to educate attendees about the purported joys of socialized medicine.
