Liberal Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid may control Capitol Hill today, but the voters increasingly are rejecting their agenda. A new Rasmussen poll finds that “Voters now trust Republicans more than Democrats on six out of ten key issues, including the top issue of the economy.” A recent Rasmussen poll asked voters to rank the importance of ten issues. Here’s the breakdown of the issues by importance and where each party stands:
- Economy: 81% of voters ranked the economy as “very important.” When it comes to the economy, voters prefer the GOP 45%-to-39%.
- Government Ethics/Corruption: 76% of voters ranked government ethics as “very important.” Among independent voters, it was the most important issue, behind the economy. Last month, Democrats enjoyed an 11-point lead. But in the wake of several Democrat scandals, such as John Murtha’s earmarks and Pelosi’s accusations against the CIA, voters now favor the Republicans 35%-to-29%.
- Social Security: 59% ranked Social Security as their most important issue and voters favor the Democrats 43%-to-37%.
- National Security/War on Terror: 58% of voters ranked the national security as their most important issue and they preferred Republicans by a whopping 15 points – 51%-to-36%.
- Taxes: 54% of voters ranked taxes as their most important issue and they supported the GOP 44%-to-39%.
- Education: Education was ranked most important by 52% of voters. They favored the Democrats 44%-to-37%.
- Health Care: 49% of voters ranked health care as their most important issue and they favored Democrats 47%-to-37%.
- War in Iraq: 48% of voters said the war in Iraq was their most important issue and voters prefer the GOP to handle the war by a margin of 45%-to-37%.
- Immigration: 42% of voters ranked immigration as their most important issue and they favored the Republicans by a large margin of 43%-to-29% for the Democrats. I hope Harry Reid is paying attention since he wants to tackle immigration reform this year too.
- Abortion: 39% of voters ranked abortion as their most important issue and the parties were tied at 41%.
In addition to the big swing on government ethics, Rasmussen notes that the Republican edge on the economy is “the first time in over two years of polling that the GOP has held the advantage on this issue.” He also observed that the Democrat advantage on Social Security is down and their lead on health care was cut nearly in half from a May survey.
As I noted in yesterday’s report, voters in Europe just delivered a stinging rebuke to socialist policies and parties. This polling suggests the American people are waking up too, and it explains why President Obama and the Democrats appeared so desperate yesterday to repackage their failed stimulus program.
