Democrat Deeds Changes his Tune Daily

Deeds: Hypocritical in Criticism of McDonnell

RICHMOND - Democratic candidate for governor Creigh Deeds made the remarkable admission yesterday that he has changed a number of his views on issues over time, exposing breathtaking hypocrisy as he simultaneously attacks Republican Bob McDonnell for a college thesis written more than two decades ago. At a press conference designed to launch another day's worth of assaults on McDonnell, Deeds confessed that as a younger man in 1989 he held opinions that are not the same as ones that he harbors today.

Hey, I'm Not the Same Guy I Was Then ...

"Asked at the news conference whether there were beliefs he held at the close of Ronald Reagan's presidency that have changed since, Mr. Deeds replied, ‘I'm sure that there are.'

"‘In 1989, I was 31 years old, I was a prosecutor, we'd had our third child ... I was trying cases in Bath County every day. I'm sure there were views that were different in 1989 than they are today,' he said." (Associated Press, September 4, 2009).

But Wait, There's More ...

"‘I think we are all evolving as we live this life,' Mr. Deeds said"

*

"Mr. Deeds, who often describes himself in public speeches as ‘a work in progress ...'"

"Concerning his own record, Mr. Deeds acknowledged voting in the Senate in 2005 and 2006 to put the proposed state constitutional amendment banning same-sex unions in Virginia on the ballot for a statewide ratification vote. But he said he voted against it in the November 2006 referendum." (Associated Press)

Let's Go to the Video Tape ...

At the Democratic primary debate in Williamsburg on April 19, 2009, Deeds stammered his way through an answer in an attempt to describe why his views on certain issues had taken a sudden leftward lurch as he attempted to appeal to the liberal base of his party. Watch Deeds explaining how he is a "work in progress" here.

"I grew up in a pretty fundamentalist background. I grew up in a very literalist society, I guess. But like most people, I'm a work in progress. You know, I change a little bit every day. Maybe I get a little bit better. Sometimes I get a little bit worse. I hope I get a little bit better every day." (Creigh Deeds, Democratic Primary Debate, April 19, 2009)

Sometimes It Doesn't Even Take 20 Years ...

... More Like 48 Hours

Creigh Deeds has been a consistent opponent of charter schools, which are public schools that are free of some regulation that usually accompanies traditional schools, but must adhere to a performance standard and a measure of success as set by their establishment. History shows that they are successful and are heavily favored in urban environments where normal public schools are struggling to meet the needs of students.

In her introduction of Deeds at a Virginia Education Association training meeting in Wytheville in August, Virginia Education Association president Kitty Boitnott cautioned attendees about the dangers of charter schools and performance pay for teachers. Deeds, meanwhile, stood at her shoulder and nodded his head approvingly in agreement.

However, just two days later at a fundraising appearance with President Obama, Deeds changed his tune, fully endorsing Obama's plan to promote charter schools nationally.

"Deeds said he supports Obama's efforts to expand charter schools," wrote the Roanoke Times.
