Obama and Pelosi: Twin Miseries for America

Are you better off today than you were 2 years ago?

Demonstrating once again he is void of a single original idea, Barack Obama has “borrowed” some rhetoric from Ronald Reagan and started to ask publicly, “Are you better off today than you were 4 years ago?” It’s a shame he couldn’t ask Mr. Gorbachev to “tear down that wall” on his recent trip to Europe, though I guess he can still hand out jellybeans.

His lack of originality aside, it may be a good idea for voters to look back to the last time they were sold “change.” They need only look back 2 years ago when Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats won control of Congress promising to take on George W. Bush to lower gas prices and “fix” the economy.

Yet, the only thing the Pelosi Congress has managed on energy is to send gas prices to record levels – 74% higher than when they took office only 19 months earlier (see chart).

Meanwhile the economy is teetering on recession; higher gas prices have caused higher inflation; the housing market is a mess; and peoples’ confidence in their family’s economic future has dipped to its lowest level in years.

If all this is what Pelosi and Obama mean by “change”, how much more “change” can we take? Compared to today, 2 years ago looks like the good old days!

Perhaps that’s why Congress has record-low approval ratings of 9%, causing Pelosi (herself) to laughably state that she herself disapproves of Congress (watch here).

Democrats in Congress really have no excuse this time. As we all know, the U.S. Constitution requires that all spending and tax bills must originate with the Congress, so Speaker Pelosi effectively controls the purse strings and a substantial portion of the economic policy of the country. When the Democrats refuse to drill and promise trillions more in taxes and spending, it serves only to restrain investment; curtail economic activity; undermine confidence; and wreak havoc in the markets upon which so much of Americans’ financial futures depend.

Just what has the Pelosi Democrat Congress attempted to do to help American families while gas prices have skyrocketed? You’ll love this: click here. So, take heart America; gas prices may be up 70%, and we may be paying more for everything else as a result, but hey – we finally passed legislation to keep monkeys safe. I like monkeys too.

As Nancy Pelosi goes on vacation without allowing even a vote on more oil and gas exploration and drilling, it’s important for everyone to remember that the brand of “change” she brought to the Congress two years ago is exactly the same “change” Barack Obama promises today: higher taxes; opposing energy independence; trillions more in new government spending; and appeasement in the war on terror.

So next time you hear a Democrat complain that we’re worse off than 4 years ago, remind them that the wrecking ball started swinging when Pelosi and the Democrats got into the driver’s seat. Obama will be nothing more than a second helping of Nancy Pelosi, which is all the more reason we need Senator John McCain in the White House.
