"Here’s a bold idea that some are whispering about: Skyrocketing energy prices are doing what our enemy wants most – siphoning billions of dollars away from our economy and into the coffers of hostile foreign regimes. The softening economy is sapping our national morale in a time of war. Under these circumstances, the president should consider declaring the current energy crisis a national emergency and, using his authority as commander-in-chief, issue an executive order authorizing offshore drilling. No doubt many environmentalists would rush to court seeking to overturn such an order, and they might well succeed. But such a bold move would continue to draw the public’s attention to a vital issue as well as the inaction by liberal Democrats on Capitol Hill."
