The new Obama Administration has yet to assume power, but it is already embroiled in partisan scandals. In a new “first,” we learned over the holidays that the president-elect was interviewed by the FBI for hours about what he knew regarding Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s (D-IL) attempts to sell Obama’s Senate seat.
There were reports in recent days that Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) was also offering Gov. Blagojevich his advice as to whom he should appoint. According to the Chicago Sun Times, Reid objected to the potential appointment of three men in particular, all of whom just happen to be black. Now Senator Reid has threatened to call the Capitol Police to prevent the governor’s eventual appointment (another black man) from entering the Senate. Why is this not a bigger story?
News broke over the weekend that New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has withdrawn his name as Obama’s Secretary of Commerce due to an ongoing grand jury investigation over an alleged “pay-to-play” scheme where a major Richardson donor was awarded a billion-dollar state contract. ABC News reported yesterday that the Obama transition team feels the governor “was not forthcoming with them about the federal investigation.” But, wait, there’s more…
There are multiple reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is rewriting the rules that will govern the House for the next two years, specifically seeking to gut the “good government” reforms instituted in 1995 by Republicans as part of the Contract with America. Pelosi plans to repeal the six-year term limit on committee chairmanships and will move to eliminate “motions to recommit,” the one opportunity the minority party has to spotlight and propose substantive changes to the most controversial items in a bill. So while the president-elect tells us he wants bi-partisanship, his top ally in the House is working to make sure the GOP will have no influence.
Partisan corruption and the arrogance of power (in addition to a lot of leftwing, big government policies) helped to torpedo the last united Democrat government in 1994. If the Democrats continue on this path, history may well repeat itself in 2010.
