This is the “criminalization of politics.” It starts with ideas like political correctness, hate crimes laws and the Fairness Doctrine. If the government can tell us what to think and say, why stop there? Your political views will be next.
This past week, the streets of Minneapolis were filled with police and National Guard. Why? Because leftwing radicals, if they had not been stopped in running street battles, would have stormed the convention and attacked the delegates. Why? Because we believe in faith and family?
This morning, the local news is reporting that at least 900 arrests were made. The police confiscated automatic weapons, Molotov cocktails, bottles filled with human feces and urine. In addition, the police also uncovered a plot to kidnap delegates. Just part of how the radical Left engages in political discourse these days with the ultimate goal of intimidating and silencing any and all opposition.
In the convention hall itself, people claiming that they represent “tolerance,” tried to shout down the nominee of the Republican Party three times in the first ten minutes of his address. Conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham reports that last week in Denver she was surrounded by leftists who recognized her and told her that when they take over the country war criminals like her would be put on trial.
I first got into this battle thirty years ago when I left a fantastic job to work in the Reagan campaign for a dollar a week – symbolic pay to distinguish me from a volunteer. In the decades since, God has opened more doors than I could have ever imagined. I have had the great privilege to be in a very real way a part of history in the making. There have been gigantic battles along the way. None of them, however, was more important than the one we are in right now.
My friends, pray for our country. Pray for Senator McCain and his family. Pray for Gov. Palin and her family. Do everything you can to explain to your family members, neighbors, co-workers and fellow worshippers what is at stake in the next 60 days.
In closing, as I wrap up this report from St. Paul and get ready to head back to Washington, let me thank you again for all you have done over the years to empower me to accomplish what we can in this great experiment in self-government we call America. Let me leave you with the words of Sen. McCain as he closed his address to the 2008 Republican National Convention and rallied the nation to his side:
