Office of U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty: Hagerty Happenings, Tuesday, April 23, 2024

I wanted to let you know about some of the things I've been working on these last few weeks on your behalf.

Last month, I proposed two amendments to stop illegal immigration to the government funding bills. My first amendment that Democrats blocked would bar illegal aliens from being counted in the census for the allocation of congressional seats and electoral votes. Every single Senate Democrat voted against this amendment, which put them on the record siding with illegal aliens over American citizens. The second amendment I introduced would ban taxpayer funds from being used to secretly fly illegal aliens from other nations directly into states across the country for resettlement. Once again, every single Senate Democrat blocked this amendment. It has been made abundantly clear why Democrats refuse to secure our southern border, and why there is no outrage from my colleagues on the other side of the aisle when confronted with the fact that the number of illegal aliens who have entered the United States since Joe Biden took office exceeds the population of thirty-six states. Blocking my two amendments showed America that they incentivize illegal immigration for the purpose of maintaining political power.

Americans are well aware that, under President Biden, every town is a border town. Along with many other members of Congress and concerned citizens, I've sought transparency for three years from the Biden Administration regarding its resettlement efforts through legislation and oversight inquiries—to no avail. With the revelation of recent letters sent to local governments stating exactly how many migrants are resettling in a particular area for a particular week, it's now clear that the Biden Administration has this information and has simply been hiding it. This raises questions that demand answers: How many migrants has Biden's Department of Homeland Security knowingly resettled in American towns? How have these migrants been vetted? Do they pose a threat to American citizens? Americans and local governments forced to deal with the impacts of this President's border crisis and the resettlement in their communities deserve to know what the Biden Administration knows. My office has set up an online form for people to submit any similar letters that they have received. If you have received one of these letters, click here to let my team know.
BILL'S BILLS
S.3872—LIABLE Act
This legislation that I introduced with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) would allow American victims of terrorism to sue international organizations that support those terrorists, such as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provided resources to Hamas terrorists ahead of the horrific October 7th attack on Israel. In addition to the UNRWA employees who directly participated in the terrorist attacks of October 7th that killed dozens of Americans, UNRWA has indisputably provided material support to the terrorist organization Hamas for decades. This necessary legislation would make it possible to hold UNRWA accountable for its complicity in terrorism.

S.3915—No Community Development Block Grants for Sanctuary Cities Act
I introduced this legislation with Senator JD Vance (R-OH), which would amend the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 to prevent sanctuary cities from receiving federal housing grants. Cities that encourage illegal immigration shouldn't be rewarded with federal housing subsidies. I'm pleased to support this legislation that would prevent taxpayer dollars from flowing to sanctuary cities that refuse to enforce the law.

S.4025—STOP TRANQ Act
I joined Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Tim Kaine (D-VA), along with Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR), in introducing this bipartisan legislation to add a statutory requirement for the State Department to include reporting on xylazine, or "tranq," in its annual International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR), a country-by-country report that tracks efforts to counter all aspects of the international drug trade. The United States must use all available means to counter these growing narcotic threats to our children.
