Congressman Good Update: The Status of the Speaker's Election

The people who elected a Republican majority in the House last year overwhelmingly wanted Rep. Jim Jordan (OH) to be our next Speaker. They know he is committed to fighting the Biden-Schumer agenda, closing our Southern Border, and reducing our federal spending. While Rep. Jordan had the support of approximately 90% of Republicans, unfortunately about two dozen members denied him the 217 votes he needed to become Speaker. Rep. Jordan withdrew his candidacy on Friday, after he failed to receive a majority of Republican support in a secret ballot in a conference meeting.

Sadly, most of those who opposed his speakership did not express publicly the reasons why they didn't support him. Washington may be "working" for these politicians, but it is certainly not working for the American people. The country is in crisis, with $33 trillion in national debt, 40-year high inflation, and an open border.

Some Republicans this week put forward a proposal to elevate the interim Speaker pro-tempore, Rep. Patrick McHenry (NC), to an extended period with expanded power as a "Temporary Speaker". Some even floated the idea of using Democrat votes and forming a "coalition government" in a power-sharing arrangement. This would be an unconstitutional and dangerous precedent, and thankfully it was rejected by the majority of our conference.

We will hold a candidate forum on Monday, and vote to nominate a new candidate for Speaker on Tuesday. We must select a fighter and a leader who is committed to conservative principles.
