Team Miyares: Miyares Weekly Roundup

"Second Look, a radical left-wing proposal making its way through the Virginia legislature, makes nearly 3,000 criminals convicted of murder, rape, abduction, and other violent felonies immediately eligible for release from prison, even after a life sentence or a guilty plea. Only fifty nonviolent offenders are immediately eligible. Make no mistake: Second Look is exclusively for Virginia's most violent criminals.

The victims and families of survivors who bravely showed up in the House of Delegates this session to oppose the bill were dismissed and revictimized by their government. If this bill passes, these survivors will be revictimized yet again by a call out of the blue ordering them to appear in court to face their rapist or the person who murdered their loved one. We cannot let this bill become law."

It Only Takes One

News headline

Last week, AG Miyares and First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin launched ItOnlyTakesOne, a fentanyl awareness initiative designed to educate Roanoke parents and caregivers about the dangers of opioids and likelihood of fentanyl-laced counterfeit drugs. The Attorney General and the First Lady previously launched a public awareness campaign called "One Pill Can Kill" to generate open, honest conversations amongst families about fentanyl and the extreme threat it poses by raising awareness about counterfeit drugs. One Pill Can Kill will continue to serve as a statewide resource for Virginia families.

By sharing resources like One Pill Can Kill or Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth's ItOnlyTakesOneVA.com, Virginians can be equipped with information to protect themselves and those they love.

Attorneys general from across the country are united in agreement that America will not tolerate bad actors utilizing AI to try and rob Americans of their most fundamental right: the right to free and fair elections.

AG Miyares joined 50 other attorneys general in sending a warning letter to an organization allegedly responsible for sending New Hampshire residents scam election robocalls that used an AI-generated clone of President Biden's voice to discourage voters from participating in the primary. New Hampshire's AG issued a cease-and-desist letter as part of its ongoing investigation and worked with the Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force to traceback the calls and identify the source back to a Texas-based company.

One Pill Can Kill

AG Miyares' Operation Ceasefire secured a 50-month prison sentence for a convicted felon illegally in possession of multiple firearms in Chesapeake.

"In order to keep our communities safe, we have to keep the repeat offenders committing the vast majority of violent crime off our streets. I'm grateful for our partnership with local and federal agencies, allowing our Ceasefire prosecutors to focus on high crime cities and produce successful prosecutions like this."
