Weekly Wrap-Up with Congressman Byron Donalds – February 5, 2024

Last week, my office was hard at work on Capitol Hill fighting to deliver meaningful legislative solutions on behalf of our Southwest Florida community, the State of Florida, and the American people.

The week began with our team sending a letter to SEC Chairman Gary Gensler to express serious concerns regarding the SEC's investigation into the video platform, web hosting, and cloud services business, Rumble. It is no secret that Rumble has risen to prominence by serving as the preeminent free speech alternative to Big Tech media platforms and is home to many who were wrongfully censored or deplatformed by Big Tech, often in coordination with the federal government. With the presidential cycle now in full swing, the timing of this investigation suggests an effort to either implicitly or explicitly influence Rumble's role in the 2024 election under the threat of constant litigation.

On Wednesday night, the House of Representatives passed my bill, H.R. 5528 – The Safe and Smart Federal Purchasing Act, with a unanimous, bipartisan vote of 397-0. As a member of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, ensuring proper governance and efficiency in federal operations are paramount concerns of mine. Federal procurement processes—although often overlooked—are critical to the operation of our government and necessitate comprehensive assessment. Simply put, affordability considerations and associated national security risks of procurement procedures must be thoroughly evaluated. I am proud to receive the unanimous support of my colleagues on this proposal and look forward to its introduction and successful passage in the Senate.

Later in the week, the House also voted on key legislation regarding the handling of illegal aliens and terrorists within our nation. October 7th was the darkest day in Jewish history since the Holocaust. H.R. 6679 will deny entry to the terrorists who perpetrated these heinous atrocities–but the vote was not unanimous. It's deeply concerning that this must be restated but foreign terrorists do not belong in our country. I also voted in favor of H.R. 6976 – to deport illegal aliens who have committed the crime of driving while drunk or impaired. The Biden White House opposed this measure and 150 Democrats voted against this bill. This should have been common sense and unanimous.

Over the weekend, the United States launched a series of strikes throughout the Middle East and the Senate released the text of its amnesty deal. These strikes should have occurred the same day our servicemembers were killed in Jordan. The weakness that Biden has shown towards Iran over the past three years has empowered bad actors across the Middle East. Trump's Maximum Pressure campaign worked and economic sanctions will box Iran back-in. Furthermore, I am a "No" on the Senate's amnesty deal. This bill would allow 5,000 illegal aliens per day, 150,000 illegal aliens per month, and 1,800,000 illegal aliens per year into our country. This bill also includes $60+ billion more to Ukraine. 269 days ago, House Republicans passed a real solution to the border crisis–H.R. 2–and I will continue to strongly advocate for it's swift passage in the Senate.

As your Congressman, you have my commitment to work on your behalf and restore order and proper governance to The People's House.
