Tom Pyle, American Energy Alliance: "Green" bill just passed out of Senate committee

The PROVE IT Act (S. 1863) just passed out of the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee -- news that I'm sure the "green" left will be celebrating for months to come.   This misguided legislation, co-sponsored by Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), requires the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to study the carbon dioxide emissions related to imported goods. But you and I know that it won't end there!   Here's what will really happen if the PROVE IT Act passes the full Senate:

First, we'll see the foundation for a tariff on energy-intensive imports. However, the DOE chooses to "study" the issue, I'm confident that the resulting data collection will be used to make the case for levying import taxes on imported goods -- and it'll be (wrongly) sold to the American people as good for our manufacturers and our economy. Then, we'll see the scope broaden until it's a carbon border adjustment tax, like Sen. Cassidy (R-LA) has proposed. No matter the packaging of the proposal, it's an indirect tax on American consumers, as it will raise costs across the economy at a time when too many are still struggling with the effects of inflation. Finally, we'll reach the end of the slippery slope with an economy-wide carbon tax. This long-treasured dream of the "green" left will saddle Americans with even more costs, as a carbon tax would increase the costs of every good and service you and I use.

But before we reach rock bottom, I'm confident that the American Energy Alliance and our pro-American energy movement will defeat this latest iteration of the carbon tax -- as we have with misguided schemes of it before.   Put simply: you have helped the American Energy Alliance beat carbon tax proposals before, and with your continued support, we can do it again.   The victories we've won, the battles we've fought -- none of this would be possible without you.
