Every now and then, we see examples of conservative courage and leadership in the United States Senate. Today was one of them.
U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) — a candidate we supported in the last election — has taken a prominent leadership role in the fight for the constitutionally required Senate impeachment trial for Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas.
Today, Senator Schmitt stood tall and objected rather than sitting quietly while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) sought consent for a bipartisan agreement to dismiss the impeachment articles without a trial in exchange for a few protest votes.
Eric Schmitt used his power as a United States Senator to say, "No, not on my watch."
As a result of his objection, Chuck Schumer and his fellow Democrats were forced to vote for a ridiculous motion claiming that the Secretary's failure to secure our borders does not rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors.
We hope the Democrats are prepared to tell that to the families suffering from the violent crimes resulting from our open borders.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
United States Senators take an oath to "support and defend" the Constitution, which famously begins "We the people."
This week, Senate Democrats betrayed the Constitution and the American people by short-circuiting the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas. For the first time in American history, the Senate punted on an impeachment trial — because they didn't want Americans to hear the evidence.
As you know, Secretary Mayorkas has presided over the largest invasion of American soil in history. More than 9 million illegal immigrants have stolen into our county on his watch.
And all along, Mayorkas has lied to Congress and the public about his policies and their true purpose. His tenure at DHS has been a long train of "high crimes and misdemeanors."
And so, after years of unanswered questions and obstruction, the House of Representatives finally impeached Mayorkas in February and began preparing to try him in the Senate to remove him from office.
Senate Democrats, however, just voted to sweep the entire case under the rug. They would rather side with Mayorkas on a recorded vote than have the evidence on full display.
They don't want House conservatives like Jim Jordan showing the country exactly what Mayorkas has been doing. They don't want Americans to see the emails, the memos, the facts on the ground. They don't want us to hear from the Border Patrol agents and Texas police who have seen their communities overrun. They don't want to hear from witnesses whose loved ones have suffered from violence at the hands of the criminals Mayorkas welcomed into our country.
And what was the final vote to dismiss the case? 51 to 49.
The tiny Democrat majority voted in lockstep to turn a blind eye to Secretary Mayorkas' crimes — one of the most corrupt displays of partisanship in the history of the Senate.
We cannot undo the vote, but we can undo the Democrats' majority.
If we care about the border, the rule of law, and fighting government corruption, we have only one choice: electing conservatives to the Senate in 2024.
Senate Conservatives Fund has already identified and endorsed six such candidates. They are the best of the class. Must-support leaders in must-win races. Some you already know — the rest you should know:
Ted Cruz of Texas
Rick Scott of Florida
Josh Hawley of Missouri
Alex Mooney of West Virginia
Bernie Moreno of Ohio
Kari Lake of Arizona
If all six win in November — and they all can — the Democrats' Senate majority will be gone. More importantly, the new GOP Senate will be the most conservative in our lifetimes without Mitch McConnell as their leader.
You can ignore all the pundits and tweets and horse-race news coverage. The fight for a conservative Senate is going to come down to a handful of races.
