Good Stewardship of Government is Needed - Not Higher Taxes

Lt. Governor Bill Bolling comments on Attorney General of Virginia Bob McDonnell's article published in the Virginian Pilot on June 1st (see previous post)

"In this op/ed Bob does a great job making a point that I have been arguing for years - when it comes to transportation funding the problem in Richmond is not a lack of money, it is a lack of fiscal discipline and an unwillingness to direct the resources we already have to important priorities like transportation, as opposed to other new and expanded government programs.

When it comes to additional transportation funding, our message needs to be clear and consistent. We support additional funding for highway construction and maintenance. We understand that this is a very important issue facing our state, especially Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. However, we need to look for ways to secure this funding through existing revenue sources, not higher taxes; and we must make certain that VDOT is spending the money they already have efficiently and effectively.

You may recall that in April of last year I kicked off my 100 Ideas For The Future Of Virginia initiative. The purpose of the 100 Ideas program is to relate our conservative principles and values to the issues that matter most to Virginia’s families. Bob’s op/ed is an excellent example of how we must do this. Yes, we support additional funding for highway construction and maintenance, but unlike the Democrats we do not .believe that the only way to secure this funding is through higher taxes."
