"Here are the things I'm going to do," said Jim Gilmore who is highly regarded as a promise-keeper for his determination to follow through on campaign promises.
"Mark Warner doesn't care what you pay for a tank of gas," added Gilmore.
Bob Marshall, who is known as a tenacious legislator and stalwart defender of life, liberty, and property, told the crowd, "I support drilling in ANWR. I oppose the ethanol corn mandate."
"I want to protect all human life from conception." said Marshall. As expected, Marshall, a resident of Prince William County, drew his strongest support from Northern Virginia. The 7th District, which is Governor Gilmore's home district, held its delegate vote count back until the end of the tally. Gilmore's expected win in the 7th helped put him over the top and give him the nomination.
When he took the stage, entering from the right as always, to concede the nomination, Bob Marshall said that he shook Jim Gilmore's hand on the way to the podium. He told the crowd of about 4,000 that the goal now was to defeat Mark Warner.
Demonstrating the depth of support he has earned during his 17 years in the Virginia General Assembly, Delegate Marshall said the margin of defeat was 80 votes but recent press reports have pegged it closer, at 65. He also noted that he did not enter the race until January and was outspent by 14 to 1,
In his acceptance speech, Jim Gilmore noted that, "People who say, 'You can't win in Northern Virginia' are just wrong."
"If we stand for something, we will carry Northern Virginia. I can tell you right now, McCain-Gilmore will defeat Obama-Warner in November," said Gilmore to the cheering crowd.
