"Have you heard about the big scandal here in Washington? It’s huge and could turn the election. You haven’t heard about this? Actually I’m not surprised, because so far it only involves Democrats. Here’s a quick review: Two Democrat senators, Chris Dodd of Connecticut and Kent Conrad of North Dakota, key members of the Senate Banking and Budget committees, evidently got sweetheart mortgage deals from Angelo Mozilo, the CEO of Countrywide Financial Corporation. Barack Obama has singled out Countrywide for “infecting the economy and helping to create a home foreclosure crisis.”
According to press reports, Conrad saved about $10,000 and Dodd saved about $70,000 thanks to these sweetheart deals. Initially Senator Kent Conrad denied any wrongdoing and said, “I have never met Angelo Mozilo.” He later admitted that he called him. A Wall Street Journal editorial this week mocked Conrad, noting, “For what other reason, besides preferential treatment, would one call the CEO of the mortgage company? Does Mr. Conrad call August Busch IV when he wants to buy a six-pack?”
Here’s my point: If the members of Congress involved had been Republicans, like Tom DeLay, Newt Gingrich or … whoops, those guys aren’t even in Congress anymore because they were hounded out of office! You get the point. Meanwhile, Democrat Congressman William Jefferson, who was caught with tens of thousands of dollars in his freezer, is still there collecting his six-figure salary."
